Winter Classic will start at 3 p.m., not 1 p.m.
You'll have two more hours of drinking before tomorrow's Winter Classic. Just like with the Alumni Game on Saturday, the start time for the main event between the Flyers and Rangers on Monday has been pushed back from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. in an attempt to avoid the hot afternoon sun that'll bake the ice into a soft, mushy mess.
It's going to be warm again tomorrow, but that's not the problem. It's all the sun, and that's why it's just a two hour delay. By 3 p.m., the ice on the field at Citizens Bank Park is mostly hidden by shadows, eliminating the problems that plague the crew earlier in the day.
Anyway, this is probably better. The scene at the end of the Alumni Game yesterday, ending under the lights, was pretty damn awesome. And for real.... two more hours of drinking. Gates open at 1 p.m.

Matt Carle has more points than JVR
First of all, great for Carle. With Pronger out a 2nd scoring defenseman is critical if we want to do anything in the playoffs (along with a D-man PP slap shot from the point…Mesjaros has been our best here). That’s the most painful part of Pronger injury).
But back to JVR…wtf?!?
Carter & Boucher traded for Cam Ward
He's the new Carter
Basically shows up when he feels like it.
Wrong. He’s playing with a number of injuries and is going to have surgery after the season is over.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
Two words: playing hurt.
Simon Gagne AND Mike Richards may move between towns, wear new jerseys and call different arenas home but, at the end of the day, they will both always be Philadelphia Flyers.
One day Sean Couturier will win the Conn Smythe. You heard it here first.

He’s twenty-two fucking years old.
Yup, he’s washed up. Trade him for the equivalent of Matt Walker and a 4th.
Do you see what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
While I’m agreeing with you on JVR, I resent the fact that you say Gagne was washed up.

I never said Gagne was washed up. I was spoofing the idea of “Get so-and-so out of town at all costs.”

What did you expect out of JVR’s first and second seasons? No really I would like to know.

At 20 years old, JvR stuck in the NHL all year, while Ryan had four brief NHL stints and kept getting sent back to the AHL.
At 21 years old, JvR stuck in the NHL all year and had a great playoff run. Ryan spent 1/4 of the season in the AHL, then had a great 64 games.
JvR clearly won the rookie year, and Ryan clearly won the second year. Both had shown flashes of greatness, though Ryan had sustained his longer — and for this reason, I’d say he had the better first two years, but the gap doesn’t seem huge.

Yeah,Carle is playing well.Almost makes me want to forgot all his mistakes, and all his stupid plays, over the last few years so we can keep him.Never been a gig fan of JVR however i have to say it the kid had a good series against the Bruins last year (in which we lost 4-0).
You have to wonder “What if we had the no.1 pick” and Kane on the team right now.At least 1 Stanley Cup and we would be even better, probably at the same level than the Bruins right now.I don’t think we have the team to beat them in a Playoff series but that’s not important now.Let’s focus on the Rangers and win the Winter Classic.
Just because i typed this JVR is going to score tomorrow, just wait for it

Last year, Matt Carle had 40 points.
Why are you surprised that this year, those numbers are 19 for JVR and 20 for Carle?

This whole thesis is absurd. But with regard to this line, Mr. Timmonen would like to speak with you now
GMAT verbal section question, Philadelphia sports version.
In 2015, which one of the following will prove to be a better investment?
(a) Ilya Bryzgalov's contract (b) Ryan Howard's extension (c) Mike Vick's extension (d) Greek bonds from 2009 (e) Papelbon's bloat deal
Yes, one m, although that second one was left over from hmmmmm.

Stats much?
Timonen is the first scoring defenseman. But if we don’t have a number 2, come playoff time its shut down Kimo time and we have no answer. So Carle tracking to 50 points, and 4 goals already is a great thing. It surprised me as he can be very frustrating to watch at times.
On the PP point, a strong shooting d-man is essential. Right now its a huge gap. So let’s look at some stats:
- 2010 Goals: Meszaros 8, Kimo 6, Carle 1
- 2010 Playoffs D Scoring Leader: Meszaros 6 points, 2 goals.
- Goals by top defenseman of Stanley cup teams: 14 each Flyers: 8
No Pronger means less shots on goal, less deflection PP goals, easier to defend us on PP. Weak PP in playoffs = short playoffs. It’s a critical need.
Carter & Boucher traded for Cam Ward
I don’t disagree entirely, but do have to point this out:
Weak PP in playoffs = short playoffs
Boston had a pretty weak PP…

Boston needed scoring from their defensemen because their top goal-scoring forward had 30 goals. Philadelphia had forwards with 36 and 34. Boston’s top five forwards had 117 goals. Philadelphia’s top five had 142 goals. All the defensemen who played for Boston had a total of 38 goals, so Boston got 155 goals from their top five forwards and every defenseman. Philadelphia got 22 goals from their defenseman, or 164 from their top five plus D.
There’s also the small matter of Boston’s defenseman totaling 111 assists, while Philadelphia’s defensive corps totaled 148 assists (or, combining the numbers, Boston’s defense scored 149 points. Philly? 170).
Plus, if you exclude Chara, Boston’s defense had a total of 2 goals on the power play. If you exclude Pronger, Philadelphia had 4.
In short, your entire premise is balderdash based on a preconceived notion with no supporting evidence. Good day, sir.
Bob.
I’d have picked a different quibble.
The original thesis was that the team needs two scoring defensemen to succeed. The evidence provided was the goal total of the #1 scorer on the finalists, but if the thesis is that a team needs two because otherwise teams just shut down the #1 guy and the offense fails, shouldn’t we be looking at the stats of the #2 scorer?
Boston’s #2: Seidenberg 7-25-32
Vancouver’s #2: Edler 8-25-33
Philadelphia’s #2: Timonen 6-31-37
I don’t see a big gap there. And Buffalo and Anaheim having two 10+ goal scorers didn’t seem to matter too much.
Honestly, I think the offense is affected a lot more by how many forwards can score 20 or 30 goals than by whether there’s a second defenseman who can score 10 instead of 6.
@BSH_EricT

This. We need D-men who play D. Not offense.
Right now, Meszaros is the fourth most important D-man. Even with Pronger out.
I agree that someone should have a slap shot from the point for the PP. May I again introduce TimKerr to Mr. Timonen.

I’ve been debating for the past month whose jersey to get. So many guys I want are on short contracts and/or may eventually be cap casualties. I think I’ve narrowed it down to Couturier, Simmonds, or Coburn. But I gotta get it soon.
In 3 or 4 years I may get a Jagr WC jersey just because it’ll be awesome.

OT: Just read this article from Panotch, he’s talking Lindros and concussions, decides to mention Sid with “possible carrer ending” injury, but doesn’t think to add Prongs. SMH.
Also, there’s this piece of crap from SI, Farber. Has a valid point or two, but then says the best game of ‘10-’11 was Wash – Pitt which ended in a shootout. A shootout, really?
