Helping A Rangers Fan: Details & Updates

Bumped to the front page for obviously obvious reasons. - Travis

Continuing what was started in our earlier FanPost, here's a more detailed breakdown of how our effort to do something to reach out to the Rangers fans who were assaulted outside of Geno's Steaks after the Winter Classic last Monday.

Star-divide

The Plan: Currently, the consensus still leans toward getting jerseys and getting them autographed; but other suggestions were given such as tickets to attend another game. Please continue the discussion here regarding how everyone would like to see the final plan play out.

Where we are with the details: Thus far, we have a lead on how to get in contact with both of the victims (as yet unconfirmed, but plausible), and a means of getting any items we acquire signed.

How to contribute: This effort falls under PayPal's acceptable use policy as 'a group of people chipping in to buy someone a gift', so we need to use the process of Sending Money to a Friend. So if you have a PayPal account, click on send money, and then you would send it to my email address, which is DragonGirl0583 AT yahoo.com, the same as the email address in my BSH profile. If you don't have PayPal account and do not want to sign up for it; you can email me (same email address), and I can send you a request link, which will allow you to chip in without a log in.

Contribution deadline: I think a good goal for getting all the contributions submitted would be a week from today, Wednesday January 18th, so that we have time to get the logistics worked out. If you think I should adjust that, let me know, but it seems like a fair starting point.

I will provide a daily update to the total in the fund in the comments below, rather than updating the FanPost. Thank you so, so much to everyone who has already helped out, whether by assisting with the plan or by contributing.

This item was written by a member of this community and is not necessarily endorsed by Broad Street Hockey.

Fund update 9am 1/13:

I’m flabbergasted at this point; there’s 721.57 in the fund; not counting the payments that are pending. The fact that we’ve done that in 4 days is crazy, but awesomely so.

I emailed a transaction record to Travis, too; because at this point I even feel more comfortable with somebody else knowing how things are going.

Final tally

I intentionally waited to be the last one to chip in, just in case we ended up really close to a milestone number so I could put it over the edge. That’s way it worked out, so our total now is $1,000.15.

So, please contribute to the discussion down at the bottom about finalizing what we’re going to do.

For Those Who Say We're Only Doing This Because The Guy Is A Veteran:

Here is VorAbbadon’s original comment which we rallied behind and said, “Let’s do something about this!”

We all agreed that doing something was a good idea. Then, the next day, we found out he was a veteran, after we had already decided to help. Note Don’s response to this second comment.

It certainly didn’t start that way and was not a reason for the effort. Some people donating or calling attention to it are using it for their personal motivation, but this effort began as human beings helping other human beings. I’m sure each individual has different reasons for calling attention tot his or donating to this, but the root of it was pretty simple; human decency.

Just wanted to post this here. It’s a draft of a letter to accompany the gift. I know there are a couple others floating out there so it’s not necessarily the official one. I think we should have multiple if everyone wants to write something. But to me this is our motive, it’s not about veteran/cop anything like that.

Dear Mr. Auricchio,

We know that there is no way that we can make up for what happened to you on the night of the Winter Classic. We cannot change that it happened and, though we’re trying to aid in their capture, we cannot personally bring the assailants to justice.

What we are able to do, however, is to show you that those two goons’ lack of class and general humanity is in no way indicative of any fanbase or group that we, or any respectable humans, belong to. To that end we would like to present you and your son with these signed jerseys and our deepest apologies for the actions of two idiots.

In addition to the jerseys we have raised $$$ as a community that we would like to donate to a charity of your choice (OR if we decide to have it cover medical expenses too.)

This letter does not come to you from members of the Broad Street Hockey blog. It does not come to you from fans of the Philadelphia Flyers. It comes to you from people who will not stand for the inhumanity you were shown.

Flyers Fans: We've survived Lock-outs, Lindros and Cooperalls. If you want to get rid of us, you'll have to split an atom or two.

by KreiderDesigns on Jan 12, 2012 10:23 AM EST reply actions

This is great. I would just change the last paragraph a little bit:

Do not consider this letter as coming from either the members of the Broad Street Hockey blog or the fans of the Philadelphia Flyers, though many of us belong to both groups. It is more important for us to identify ourselves as members of the hockey community who will not stand for the inhumanity you were shown.

I would mention that to let them know that, at the end of the day, we’re all in this together regardless of what team we root for. And I think it needs to be mentioned thus to combat the constant media narrative that all Philadelphia sports fans are vicious thugs.

I’m confused… What’s wrong with saying it’s from the BSH community? I know not everyone who donated is from this community, but it was our community that took VorAbbadon’s idea and made it something real.

by PyropenguinX on Jan 12, 2012 6:56 PM EST up reply actions

Nothing. The idea is that we’re all members of the hockey community in this case, not “Flyers Fans” vs. “Rangers Fans.” And this support is coming from people who are mostly Flyers fans and BSH members, but more importantly it’s coming from fellow hockey fans.

by BannedStreetBully on Jan 12, 2012 10:36 AM EST reply actions

My intention is to ensure both of them are recognized, yes. So if it’s jersey’s they’ll each get one. This might get muddier if and when we start talking about medical expenses, but the friend will definitely be recognized.

The Rangers are inviting him to a game and honoring him… who knows what they’ll be giving him. It might include jerseys. It might be worth our time to call the Rangers and see what they have planned, so we don’t overlap. What do you guys think? I can make that call for us if we think it’s smart.

I think that’s a very smart idea. We might be able to switch our plan up based on what the Blueshirts decide. I mean I love jerseys but if they’re getting them already it might seem redundant and unimaginative if we give them jerseys as well.

I think calling is a good idea. I said above in the FanPost that I had a ‘lead’ on how to contact the victims but I hadn’t figured out how to confirm its legitimacy; but I think the article about how the Rangers fan are going to honor him may have proven that contact was for real.

Just after we started the effort, less than a day after the first FanPost went up, I got an email from someone who told me that they were related to one of the victims, and would be willing to organize a get-together for some of us to go up there and give them whatever we have in person. They informed me last week that the second victim was actually a good family friend and understood why I found the news reports confusing, and I didn’t see any media outlet report that information until the article about what the Rangers are doing for them.

I forwarded the email from the family member to Travis for a second opinion; if he thinks it looks legit, I can try asking them about the scope of the problem from that angle. I've been following this story since it happened

As a Ranger fan I’m proud to see this gesture materialize… It shows a ton of class. Whatever the gift, it doesn’t matter. It’s important that everyone know Philadelphia is better than the actions of an awful few. The significance is two-fold; to reach out to Mr. Aurrichio and also make the statement that violence towards fans anywhere isn’t welcome.

What a contrast it will be when compared to ignorant statements like… “ran their mouths” and “wearing wrong jersey in Philly” found on other websites. Thank you for countering those who’d like to blame the victim and excuse what happened outside of Geno’s.There is no excuse. Flyer fans should wear their jerseys in ny, just as ranger fans should wear theirs in Philly. The US population is more transient than ever. Jerseys are readily available and will be increasingly worn at opposing team venues as time goes on. So to those who say, don’t wear them in other cities, I say get over yourselves.

And I say to everyone on this thread and on bsh, don’t be humble. Make it known that it was here that true Flyer fans were disgusted by what happened after the Winter Classic. Make sure everyone in the media knows you were the first to call bs. It will do a ton to move forward and impress on more than just Flyers/Rangers fan relations, but hockey and other sports.

Good luck and thanks again.

In my personal opinion, I think that if the if the Rangers physically present it to them before the game, the gesture that it’s from us and we raised the money to do it will get lost. I know it wouldn’t be convenient for most people to go, but if the family members’ offer to arrange a get together for us to meet the two Rangers fans in person actually came to fruition, I think it would be more meaningful to have them set that up. It’s less than 90 minutes from me, so even if only like two of us could make it up there, it stops us from being faceless fans who put something in the mail, and we become real people who can actually show them that we’re not all bad. Plus if they were to ask us about it, we be able to talk about how we reacted to the incident and the overwhelming response to how this all came together.

by DLJr on Jan 19, 2012 9:15 AM EST up reply actions

It depends on whether or not we want to somehow do it in conjunction with the actual game where the Rangers are doing something. The family members’ original offer to me was made before the Rangers’ plans were announced, and it was to schedule a get-together for any of us who want to go up there with the two fans and their family to meet them face to face; I assume it would happen at a restaurant or something. I’m not sure that there was a strict deadline on that offer, as my original response indicated that it would take us a little while to get things together and make our decisions before we planned anything with them.

According to the article I saw, the Rangers are scheduled to honor them on the 27th of February, which is a Monday night, and he’s scheduled to meet the team after the game. That would make it somewhat difficult for us to try to go up there that same night, but maybe not impossible.

Yeah, I think the meet up is easiest for us for sure. I was just talking to the whole in conjunction with the Rangers idea. I think we can get at least one member of BSH up to the game. If we decide to do that I can check in to getting a deal on tickets, I may or may not have a connection for tickets to Rangers games at MSG. So just give me a heads up via email or on here if we decide to go that route and I can look in to it.

2. If the family is still interested in having BSH folks meet them somewhere, we could get the Jerseys to them at that event, and let the guys collect autographs after the Rangers game on the 27th? (When I say “we” it’s in a communal kind of way, as I personally can’t attend a meetup.)

I liked the idea of getting them tickets to a the next Rangers game in Philly. Especially if some people here could join and possibly act as “hosts” to help give them a better experience in Philly and show that those douche bags don’t represent all Flyers fans.

Of course, I could understand if they wouldn’t want to come back to Philly after what happened, so this might not be the best plan. Anyone else have thoughts on this? With the money raised, I’d think we could get them both a jersey AND some pretty nice tickets.

I am already going to that game, I can call my season ticket rep to see about switching seats and “escorting” or whatever we want to call it. I’d be happy to do so if they want to come to that game

Originally you were going to be taking contributions until Jan 18. I haven’t had the opportunity yet to donate…can I still send money?

Sure, go ahead. We just needed to get a total to work with, that was all.
