go ahead and laugh at me..
I know this has nothing to do with anything but I was wondering if someone could explain to me what a “buyout” is. I’m fairly new to sports terminology and I’ve seen people talk about a Bryz contract buyout here and there. help is appreciated! :)
by ForTheLoveOfBob on Jan 12, 2012 6:49 AM EST via iPhone app reply actions
a buyout would be paying bryzgalov the rest of his contract now to get rid of it for the future. the problem is right now the only buyout we could do I believe would count against our cap for the remainder of the contract. thus why people keep saying they hope for a cba buyout where we wont take the cap hit for 8 years. its the ltir solution to bryz’s contract. did I mess anything up for the experts?

I guess if LeBrun is to be believed, Ryan Suter will be wearing orange and black before the season ends. So why don’t I believe him? And why do I think that if the Flyers did acquire said Suter that it would cost them a 1st round draft pick AND either Schenn/Scooter?
Quite frankly, I’d rather see how the Gus/Bourdon tandem works before mortgaging the future in acquiring Suter. The Flyers have a strong top 4 – they just need to fill out their third pairing with a pair of dependable defensemen.
Lifelong Tennessean, Flyers' fan for life
Honestly, if they trade that much, I don’t think Suter becomes a rental player. I think he becomes a permanent.
If the Flyers believe that Pronger is done (which they might), and that Timonen isn’t resigning here (which also might be true), then Suter makes perfect sense to put alongside Carle or Coburn
Suter – Carle
Coburn – Meszaros
Bourdon – Marshall

I said this yesterday too, but I think when Kimmo’s deal ends he will decide whether he has another year or two in him and will probably take a discount to stay. I think he may have even said something to the effect that he will play in Philly until he retires.

Hopefully only Pegula would be stupid enough to pay him $6.33M/year again. I wouldn’t pay that for any D-man.

And Pronger is done or should be considered done in the Flyers FO mind. They made this mistake once with Primeau hoping he would come back factoring him into both the cap and roster during following the lockout. He only played 9 games.
Talbot 5 Nodl 0 11/7/2011
Pronger is clearly not coming back this season, but next season is still up in the air. If the Flyers trade for a guy like Suter, then there needs to be some kind of expensive conditional attachment that he won’t sign here. If I were the FO though, I wouldn’t make long term plans unless I knew for sure that Pronger was done (either LTIR’d forever or bought out). That’s how you end up trading Simon Gagne for Matt Walker.

If the Flyers believe that Pronger is done (which they might)
If anything, this is justification enough for staying pat and waiting until the offseason when Suter is a UFA. Why give away the farm if you can have a few extra months to evaluate Pronger’s health?
Keeping alive the old Vaudeville joke, "I'd rather be dead than play Philadelphia."
I think it is justification for not making any long term decisions (like trading for Luke Schenn who has 4 years left). On the other hand, there is a gap to fill on defense for the remainder of this season, so a rental D-man could and maybe even should be on their list.
We all know the FO doesn’t really think that way though.
by hebrew hammer on Jan 12, 2012 10:51 AM EST up reply actions
Right, but you can rent someone with an expiring contract who won’t cost as much without handcuffing yourself in regards to Pronger. Gleason is a name being tossed around that I would be okay with.
Keeping alive the old Vaudeville joke, "I'd rather be dead than play Philadelphia."
Yea, I think the FO has this problem where they always want the “best” and it handcuffs them time and time again.

Me neither, but if you have some assurance he’ll resign and Pronger is done, I can see it. You probably would lose a forward and let Carle walk, so the cap situation would be pretty good to get Suter and sign a replacement forward this summer.
Keeping alive the old Vaudeville joke, "I'd rather be dead than play Philadelphia."
keep in mind too that Jagr and Voracek might not be coming back. Same with Simmonds (although Simmonds I think is the most likely to stay)
There will be cap space to be given to young forwards to play in this system. I even think Carle and Suter is achievable if you go with a defense first team
"Start playing with some jam in here"
by CoburnsCuddleBuddy on Jan 12, 2012 10:59 AM EST up reply actions
I’d bet on Simmonds too, because he’s under contract for next year. And Jagr and Voracek money should be used for replacing Jagr and Voracek.
Keeping alive the old Vaudeville joke, "I'd rather be dead than play Philadelphia."
You aren’t going to replace their production for the caps that theyre currently playing for IMO. Jagr is a steal at 3.3
"Start playing with some jam in here"
by CoburnsCuddleBuddy on Jan 12, 2012 11:05 AM EST up reply actions
That’s fine, but you’ll need to replace those two and whoever you trade. The only system guy you have to re-up is Z, whose raise would be modest, if at all. So, if—say—JVR moves for Suter, you have to replace JVR’s production with someone who costs JVR’s salary + the difference between Suter and Pronger. All in all, you’d have three scorers to replace, we are just assigning the values differently.
Keeping alive the old Vaudeville joke, "I'd rather be dead than play Philadelphia."
Secondly, if all it took was Read and a high pick, I’d do it. Or Maybe Voracek and a 1st? Spitballing here

Again, I would only do it it if you know Pronger is done, and since that doesn’t seem certain, there doesn’t seem to be much of an argument in favoring of doing it right now. We’d have to get lucky to make a run in the playoffs with or without a replacement for Pronger, so why pay a heavy price for a slight bump in likelihood?
Keeping alive the old Vaudeville joke, "I'd rather be dead than play Philadelphia."
A generic replacement? I’d agree with with. But I think we both know that Suter isn’t a generic replacement
"Start playing with some jam in here"
by CoburnsCuddleBuddy on Jan 12, 2012 10:59 AM EST up reply actions
I was speaking in relative terms, really. It doesn’t matter who the replacement is, we still will not be the most talented team in the east. So, slight bump from 3rd or 4th best team in the conference to 2nd or 3rd in the conference? No thanks. I don’t think you can justify chasing Suter for this year.
Keeping alive the old Vaudeville joke, "I'd rather be dead than play Philadelphia."
I’d only chase Suter if it was long-term. And yes, I do believe that turnovers and defensive lapses are a long term issue
"Start playing with some jam in here"
by CoburnsCuddleBuddy on Jan 12, 2012 11:04 AM EST up reply actions
Right, which is why I’m saying you can wait until the offseason. If someone swoops in during the meantime and pays a high trade price and a high resigning price, well, that wasn’t something we should be willing to pay unless Pronger is done.
Keeping alive the old Vaudeville joke, "I'd rather be dead than play Philadelphia."
Maybe they already know Pronger is done but aren’t keeping a lid on the news for once to avoid overpaying.
by hebrew hammer on Jan 12, 2012 11:15 AM EST up reply actions
I also think we’re undervaluing Gleason if we are calling him a generic replacement. He’s been pretty damn good this year for a crappy team.
Keeping alive the old Vaudeville joke, "I'd rather be dead than play Philadelphia."
What do you think Carolina wants for Gleason?
by hebrew hammer on Jan 12, 2012 11:15 AM EST up reply actions
Their turn to fleece us with a rental player like we did with them and Forsberg.
But if any trade costs us Schenn or Scooter I’d say no, I don’t care who I’m getting.
But I agree with you, I’d like to see how Gus/Bourdon work out before acquiring another defensemen. And the price has to be right for Suter to get him midseason. I’m not a fan of giving up a 1st rounder or a player on the current roster to get ahold of him. I’d rather wait until the offseason and may be trade to get his rights to sign him, and by then we’ll know much more about Pronger and if he’s done or will be coming back. That would definitely infulence our decision since we know we can LTIR prongers ~5M and use that to sign Suter if need be.
If we go for a Dman before the trade deadline, I’d rather go for somebody who’s cheaper and servicable who’d fit in on the 2nd or 3rd pair for now so we don’t have to give up any important pieces on our team.

Maybe for pre-collegiate hockey there should be a line a sticks-length away from the boards around the whole ice and a penalty for crossing it or bumping a person across it. That way players are kept away from the boards. Seems like a check from behind is less damaging than when its a check from behind and into the boards. no?
While the idea is good reasoning in all reality when these catastrophic injuries occur they are either mishaps or just down right bad luck. Any injury like this is tragic so I’m not trying be callus but of the millions of kids and millions of games a hand full of tragedy is inevitable. It is the ultimate risk of playing high speed contact sports. Your just never going to know if fate is your enemy that day. When I was growing up there was a family that tragically died in a car accident on an icy road. People were up in arms that youth games were 5:30 am and put people in harm driving at those hours in the winter months.

People have argued the full face mask gives players the sense of invincibility and there is a lot less respect as a result. Players don’t think they can hurt other players or hurt themselves and reckless play ensues.
Talbot 5 Nodl 0 11/7/2011
Same reason Ed Snider argued about the shoulder pads and concussions. It is great as a Player I am not going to separate my shoulder when I flying to the board or another player a full speed. The only problem is the Player that gets hit ends up having his spinal column separated from his brain stem instead.
Talbot 5 Nodl 0 11/7/2011
I’m not sure face-masks are the issue here. Are you suggesting that high-school players and below shouldn’t wear face masks? Because the extra stick injuries that occur from that will be far more common than the freak accidents occuring from reckless play.
I think starting to teach kids young that the game is dangerous to keep you stick down and be careful is better across the board. Your face is going to get cut up that is part of the game if you don’t want to play don’t play. I mean the Candian Juniors don’t wear full face masks that is high level competition with ages starting at 16 or maybe lower if exceptions are made. That is HS age. The visor should do enough to prevent serious eye injures at the HS and college level you just won’t see these types of going for the kill hits because if you miss it is going to hurt.
Talbot 5 Nodl 0 11/7/2011
Canadian Juniors also get paid to play hockey and don’t go to school. Nevermind the fact that the skill level is much higher, and thus the likelihood of accidents is much lower.

But they are going the complete opposite way. Instead of teaching how to check properly and protect yourself, they are trying to ban checking in kids’ hockey, at the least delay it. Kids aren’t taught to hit properly, and some kids as young as peewees are delivering dangerous illegal hits because coaches allow them to

This is kind of a good point.
I would think that it’d be better to teach kids how to check early when they’re smaller and can’t do as much damage anyways.
But when they’re smaller, injuries can be detrimental to their growth and development. They do heal faster than older people, but the risk of concussions starting that early is too large for it to be safe. Concussions are mounting, easier to get and worse each time. Starting that when they are young is going to make the concussion situation worse

In agreement
I recall in my formative years being taught how to not put myself into a vulnerable position BEFORE bein given instructions on how to knock a guy off the puck. Taking a hit is a critical skill, just as much as anything else about the sport. Fast forward a few years later, I had this boneheaded coach whose only instruction about hitting was on how to deliver a hit without getting penalized. His words were something to the affect of “… You can hit the guy like this and hurt him, but it’s still not a penalty”. Not a very good message to send kids. I feel most coaches are ill trained on how to properly instruct hockey, and kids aren’t taught how to respect the sport and one another.
I didn’t grow up playing hockey, but there were similar ideas in the martial arts I did. The entire first month of aikido was learning how to fall safely, before we did ANY work on grappling. The key was learning how to not get hurt.
Bob.

How is missing a “go for the kill” hit going to hurt any less if you have a full cage on versus a visor?
Mouth hits glass versus a cage and either way IMO it is the sense of invincibility that would make kids think twice about running around out there like it was a NHL video game.
Talbot 5 Nodl 0 11/7/2011
The cage really only encourages kids to not worry about their stick, at least in my experience.
being obnoxious and self righteous while ignoring the point since 9/29/11
Certainly a possibility but if you dressed like a NHL linebacker why should you go out there a hit like one.
Talbot 5 Nodl 0 11/7/2011
It’s not the cages that promote hitting, it’s everything else. Hell ask Shaun on here Shaun asked if I would check him after the last open ice game. I’m willing to bet he asked because he felt that the pants, shoulder pads, shin pads, and elbow pads would absorb a lot of any potential pain from the collision or fall, and that the helmet, not the cage, would protect his head from the ice.
Kreider, can you provide some insight for me on this one.
Look, I’ve played since I was 5 or 6, the cage promoted me to not care about my stick (I started to care when I caught I stick on my throat), everything else promoted me to run in to people because it was fun and it didn’t hurt. If you disagree, that’s fine, that’s just my personal experience.
being obnoxious and self righteous while ignoring the point since 9/29/11
Good points even if the cage itself doesn’t really make you safe during contact does the mere fact of looking through it provide the mental illusion that it does.
Talbot 5 Nodl 0 11/7/2011
If anything it’s irritating. I couldn’t wait to take it off. One close call with a stick, I couldn’t wait to put it back on because what’s the point with the level of hockey I play now. If I play on a tournament team, and we are playing in a higher skill level, I may remove it because the higher the skill level tends to mean the less accidents occur. But anyway, in general, I view the cage as an accident protector.
being obnoxious and self righteous while ignoring the point since 9/29/11
Honestly I just wanted to know what it felt like. I mean I’ve never played ice and I’ve never played in any sort of checking league. Because I had all real gear on, thanks to Don, I felt like there was really no risk. I wasn’t worried about falling or anything since it was in open ice and not against the boards….though I’d be interested to see what that is like too.
Don’t know if I helped anyone make any point but yeah I figured there’d be no harm in it if I’ve got all the equipment on. Plus, I assumed that Don wasn’t going to try to kill me.

If you’re trying to hit someone and the first thing that hits the glass is your mouth, you’re doing it wrong.
And they are that is the point they are running around and literally running through kids along the boards because they have no fear of missing and when the do make contact the other kid gets seriously hurt. A player can’t protect himself and get his stick up when someone runs at him and he is wearing a full shield. It is not a deterrent.
Talbot 5 Nodl 0 11/7/2011
If you’re trying to protect yourself when you’re getting hit by raising your stick up, you’re doing it wrong.
If you someone is running at you (face to face) that is how I was taught to protect myself. Get my hands up. Don’t try and turn away that puts yourself in a vulnerable position.
Talbot 5 Nodl 0 11/7/2011
Yeah, but you didn’t play ice hockey. You aren’t taught to bring your stick up with your hands, I promise you. Granted, it can still be an instinctual reaction at times, but that’s not how you are taught.

A Fan's Lament
Speaking of “most overrated” how about everyone’s new saviour Giroux? Media are too busy bathing his feet to notice he’s done NOTHING the last three games. I’ve been saying all year anyone can score points in November and December when nobody gives a crap. And all the off-ice distractions like Flavor of the Month and now Twitter? Give the “A” to somebody who can lead. How long before JvR and Briere start to resent carrying the offense, Schenn too. This is how locker rooms get divided.
Hopefully Holmgren can find some idiot GM enamored of highlight films, unload #28 for some youth up front. A couple of defensemen to play as badly as the ones we have now. Or, hello, a proven name to finally stop the goalie carousel.
Doesn’t matter. As long as John Galt’s granddad is running the team they’ll never amount to anything. I love the Flyers, but why couldn’t I have been born near Phoenix or Columbus or Miami, some place with high expectations and a tradition of winning.

Damn, I hope that’s sarcasm, or I really am drunk. I thought this was tea…

But in fairness to everyone who had to do a second read to be sure flyersfaninchicago isn’t always sarcastic or nonsensical either.

It actually is the middle name of a friend of mine as well (although she uses it as her last name professionally), but I was going for the homophonic “noel” – “no L”

I thoroughly enjoyed the Tom Awad piece from Hockey Prospectus. I highly recommend people click on it who don’t mind reading through some no traditional stats.

Suter would be awesome
But does anyone have a feel on what we’d have to give up?

That’s my worry… They’d probably want either Courts, Chenn, Voracek, Read..
by ThatsGoodKoolAid on Jan 12, 2012 10:36 AM EST up reply actions
Schenn/Read are still up in the air. But because their contracts are favorable, it doesn’t hurt to keep them around
Voracek I would trade because his contract ends soon and his decent play this year has him earning a raise

I’m so scared that Read is gone. I DO NOT WANT TO GO TO THERE.

I’d keep Read around because he has a good contract. If he was on the last year of his contract, I’d think about trading him because I’m not too sure that this season is indicative of the talent he has, or if he’s overproducing.

Voracek is a player I like, but I firmly do believe that this team needs a permanent young defenseman who can carry this team. I don’t believe Coburn Carle or Mesz are fit for the job, but Suter is

While I agree Jake is having a good year I’m not really sure he’s gonna be in for much of a raise. I’m pretty sure he’ll be a RFA next so he’s in our control and looking at his point totals he’s right on track with his average year. His 6 goals so far would actually be a bit of a drop.
Having said that I think he’s increased his value somewhat by being so versatile, working up the lineup and now being a surprisingly effective penalty killer.
Jakes a streaky scorer but he’s really efficient and a hell of a skater. I would mind seeing his production stay the same so we can lock him up for a longer type deal at a reasonable cap hit, say maybe 3-5 years? His responsible defense and great skating along with the offensive upside he brings if the damn kid can ever keep it going is enough to make me happy for years. SIGN HIM UP

I don’t know why I put myself through the pain of reading comments at the end of articles, but this made my morning.
I still want Shea Weber. I would give up JVR, Gustaffson, Walker, a #1 and #2 pick today to get him.

I doubt that would get him. Nashville would never pay for $1.7 million contract to be in the minors.
Keeping alive the old Vaudeville joke, "I'd rather be dead than play Philadelphia."
That’s something only Philly would do…
