James van Riemsdyk out indefinitely with concussion
There were trade rumors surrounding James van Riemsdyk. Probably not so much anymore. The 22-year old has joined the ever-growing list of NHL players with a concussion. Via the Flyers and Paul Holmgren:
"James was hit in the head in each of our last two games. He reported yesterday, not feeling like himself. He will be out indefinitely with a concussion."
Hit in the head in two straight games. Talk about some awful luck. van Riemsdyk played just 10:31 in Thursday's game against the Islanders. This sucks.

Is there a risk in a concussed person undergoing anesthesia?
Lifelong Tennessean, Flyers' fan for life
depends on several factors (severity of concussion, amount of anesthetic needed) but it’s really not a big jump

Because they’re completely unrelated processes.
One’s a brain injury, the other is a drug induced state.
Imagine your body is a car. Now imagine you need an oil change (hip) and had an accident damage your windshield (concussion)
the act of doing the oil change is independent of fixing the windshield

It's way more gospel than the rest of ours
Still, you could have just said the two were unrelated without that ridiculous analogy
It’s like if your hair is getting messy and your fingernails are too long. You can cut the nails while the barber trims your hair.
It’s NOT like if you need to sweep the kitchen floor and buy a new dishwasher. You can try to order the dishwasher online with your laptop while you sweep, but you might drop the laptop so it’s not a good idea. And definitely don’t sweep while the workers are installing the dishwasher; that just pisses them off.
It’s sort of like if your shoe is untied and you see a quarter on the ground. You can bend over and pick up the quarter and tie your shoe all at the same time. But if the quarter is in a pile of filth on the side of the road, I’d probably just leave it.
It’s NOT like if there’s a hockey game on and your wife wants to talk about the plans for landscaping. If you try to do both at the same time, you’ll regret it.
It’s like if there’s a fire alarm and your garden needs watering. Since you have to go outside anyway, that’s a great time to get the chores done. Plus, if the fire turns out to be really bad, when the firemen show up maybe they’ll water the garden for you with their big hose.
Hopefully that clears it up for you. Let me know if you’re still confused.

no. just no lol. the brain controls everything going on in your body. I don’t know if it would be unsafe or not, but they are certainly not independent.
This team will be the death of me.
Yeah, this is my line of thinking. You knock someone out for surgery, you’re doing something to their nervous system – so as to feel no pain – which is operated by the brain.
I don’t know if this is fact, but it’s my uneducated common sense thinking.

Anaesthetic is chemical and operate by affecting chemical receptors, concussions are physical. Anaesthetic can also be localized. So I don’t think you’re right Geoff.

Might I add the silver lining to this dark cloud of news – at least they know he’s got a concussion now and will do the right thing and rest him. Several Flyers have come back from concussions after proper rest. At least he’s not trying to play through it, like Colby Armstrong. Plus, this forces him to rest, which will only help his ongoing hip injury.

If Brian Burke is dead-set on acquiring JVR, he won’t mind making the deal 5 minutes from the deadline. He also might not have any problem with acquiring JVR while he’s out with a concussion. Burke is the gutsiest GM in the league and loves to take risks.

I don’t want JvR traded to Toronto. I want the Flyers corporate espionage department to find out how they got Lupul to turn around like he has, and apply the same psychology/physiology/line change/motivation/hypnosis to JvR.

They need to put JVR (when he’s healthy) on the same line as our own version of Phil Kessel; i.e., Claude Giroux.
Lupul seems like he has finally put it all together this year. At least that’s what my eyes tell me. Shit, I saw him playing back as a “defenseman” during a 2-on-1 break in OT about a month ago. He forced the shooter to take the shot, exactly as he was supposed to do. I was stunned.

I really hate finding out a player has a concussion and they think it was from a hit a few games ago. When are players going to understand that they can’t play through a concussion and to stop lying to themselves. You know when you don’t feel right, you know when you don’t feel right and it’s after taking an elbow to the jaw that it is a concussion. Sit out and get better. Trying to play through it and getting bumped around only delays the process of getting better.
In fairness to JVR and hockey players, some concussion symptoms do not appear right away. The Brotherly Game managing editor Scott Kessler went through an experience where he did not feel his concussion symptoms until 24 hours later. You can read his story here if you want. It’s a scary yet fascinating insight into the world of someone recovering fro ma concussion.
Now as to whether or not this is anything similar to what happened to JVR, we have no way of knowing for sure.
Editor at SB Nation's Philadelphia Union blog, The Brotherly Game. Follow me on Twitter.
While this can be the case I feel too many players just try to play through it and I wouldn’t be surprised at all if JVR did too. If this isn’t the case than you obviously can’t blame him if he didn’t have symptoms until later. I just want to see players who have concussions back out there healthy and playing. Being bumped around and trying to play through a concussion is not good at all.

I believe the consensus is that a lot went undiagnosed and unreported then and that it’s worse now because of a combination of size/speed/equipment/rule changes.

My opinion for a while now is once they took the two line pass rule out things changed with speed through the netrual zone. It also had guys looking down a little more to find longer passes. So I feel that guys are taking faster blindside hits. Combine this with the size of the players and I think this plays a big part of it.

Not because he’s hurt or untradeable, but because it shows the Flyers are looking for concussions and taking them seriously. They caught it early and put no timetable on his return. Just letting him relax and heal.
It’s very smart and a welcome sign. For all we know in the past something like this would have been ignored and played through.

So, for those looking for clear cut evidence as to why JvR has a concussion, it’s probably pretty likely that this elbow to the chin from Bobby Butler last Saturday is, at least partially, to blame. (If you watch the video you’ll also notice how the Senators’ announcers accuse JvR of embellishing the hit. I wonder, can you embellish concussions too?)
If you’re keeping count at home, that is two Flyers now that have taken elbows to the head that have gone without penalization…in the past week! I thought the NHL was actually trying to cut down on hits to the head? I am still in complete shock that Staios wasn’t given a penalty or suspension for his forearm shiver to Talbot’s face on Thursday night.

So I’m watching an old episode of Shameless on Showtime ONDemand. It takes place in Detroit.
“So which tickets do you want?”
“Philly on the 12th and Edmonton on the 20th.”
“Definitely the Oilers.”
From across the room…
“Good choice. The Flyers are a bunch of fags.”
It’s fun being hated by the rest of the league.

The original Shameless was better. Showtime can suck it.

James McAvoy is quoted as saying he can’t watch the remake because they improvised much of the dialogue in the original and the remake (at least the first season) was pretty much word-for-word (and direction) capture.

Meh. She has a nice voice, though. I’ll give her that.

That it is. Unfortunately the post I would normally link has been lost, was a great write up on certain players and the team in general on why as fans we should accept it and revel in it.

It conveniently ignores the fact that he played in college as opposed to juniors, like most of those other guys did. It makes a huge difference.

Was going to post that, but didn’t want to get into it that much, also realized I’m not a member there, so I joined up. Big thanks to PoL for posting a Flyers opinion, one that doesn’t belong to FLyerRob

If the point of the comparison is “How has he performed in the NHL compared to other top 5 picks”, where he played before the NHL is irrelevant.
If the point of the comparison is “Will JVR ever perform like the typical top-5 pick”, it’s relevant.
