After watching the Taylor Hall video last night that has to be the freakiest accidents I have ever since in hockey.

Yet another argument for the use of eye shields. Granted, it was warmups. This could easily happen during a game, in a corner pileup or similar situation. I still don’t understand why they don’t wear a helmet during warmups. Even though they are skilled skaters, accidents happen. In the video, the player who fell just after Hall could have easily bounced his noggin off the ice resulting in yet another concussion. Game injuries are bad enough, but avoidable warm-up injuries are foolish. Spoken by someone whose beer league career ended due to an ankle fracture from (someone else’s) stupidity during warm-ups.

There are rumors that the game could be held at Comerica Park, and it would be fun to see a sports team from Toronto play a meaningful game in a baseball stadium for the first time in almost 20 years.

In that illustration about players who played 1,000 games with one team, I’m really surprised that it didn’t clarify which Richard it is that’s listed under Montreal. I feel like the majority of people are going to assume it’s Maurice, when it’s really his little brother Henri…

Very nice! Love the color! Though I wonder why there’s a big chunk of metal cut out from just above the distributor (LL corner of the engine bay picture), and moving the battery to the trunk is odd. If you really want to get nit-picky, the shifter boot/knob and wheels aren’t original (or period) either. hehehe :-p

It pains me to think about doing so much work to a car and then selling it. I never want to give mine up. But it’s also been in the family since it was new, so it means even more to me than just the time investment. I’m very proud of my car and absolutely adore driving it, it feels like it’s a part of me sometimes. Though I am somewhat curious what mine would go for since we went even further with the restoration….

Very cool that your car has always been in your family since new. Did you do the restoration work yourself, or did you farm it out to a specialist (or a mix of both)?

Mix of both. My stepmom’s ex-husband (you read that right) does restorations for a living, so he taught us the techniques for a lot of things and let us borrow space and tools in his massive garage. Some other more difficult/crucial tasks (like paint, body work, headliner, and reupholstering the dash) were farmed out to specialists.

Interesting that Teddy Purcell and Matt Moulson played together quite well in Manchester of the AHL. But considering that they were both considered 7.0C prospects by scouts, and in ‘08-’09 Purcell posted 16 points in 40 games for the Kings and Moulson notched only one point in 7 games, AND it was generally agreed that Purcell was a more ‘complete’ prospect than Moulson since MM was a goal-scorer and not a well-rounded player … one can certainly understand why the Kings made that choice.

So the Juice is officially loose! Wow is that kid fun to watch, even if its only 10 or so minutes a night. That almost makes it more exciting considering how much room there is for growth. Since I’m talking 4th line I better mention Shelley too, he had a pretty damn good game. He drove the net and got the puck there a few times early and actually created a scoring chance or 2. Everyone talks about him being such a bad skater, I guess I just don’t see it. For a guy his size he keeps right up with other 4th liners in the league so that’s no issue with me.Harry Z was pretty quiet but god damn can that kid stop on a fricken dime!

This was exactly the type of game Bryz needed, hopefylly he can build some confidence off that and roll into Feb heating up.
Hoping we can carry some momentum from this shalacking and ride it right through the weekend. God knows Bryz needs a boost right now and a couple big afternoon games this weekend are hopefully where it starts.

Oh and thanks for the update on Taylor Hall, I was wondering why he didn’t play last night. There’s a good reason I changed my fantasy team name to the Broadstreet Band-Aids…

by kckrebs on Jan 18, 2012 9:05 AM EST via mobile reply actions

Speaking of Juice the biggest difference I have noticed since the start of the season is his skating he looks more explosive with better acceleration. Either he physically improved or he is feeling more comfortable and reacting quicker to the plays player more proactively.

I love Couturier and I think he is well on his way to being a great center, that being said I just want to say he is shooting a little over 30% according to yahoo stats. I don’t think that would be sustainable all season and into the future.

15.4% on the year is rather high as well, but not outlandish. For a frame of reference, only one player did it on the Flyers in the past two years (Ville Leino last year), but in 08-09, both Gagne and Knuble did it, but barely (15.4 and 15.6%, respectively)

Also, only 6 active players have a career shooting percentage of 15.4% or higher (Tanguay, Brunette, Stamkos, Holmstrom, Vanek, and Morrow).

But single season? It’s been done 166 times since the lockout, or over 27 times per season.

So again, it’s high, but it’s not high for 40 or even 80 games.

First of all, I completely agree with Matt that the 30% during this goal streak is unsustainable and that he won’t be a goal-per-game scorer for his career or even a season.

Second of all, I agree with Geoff that his shooting this year is high but not anomalous. But I’ll dice it a bit finer:

His average shot distance (which should level off faster than shooting percentage does) is very low — it’s between that of Briere and Giroux, who are both mid-13% shooters over the last few years. So you might estimate him as a mid-13s shooter going forwards, except that he’s not playing the PP and they do — he’s actually shooting 15.1% at 5 on 5, which is a lot higher than we should expect in the long run.

So if he starts to get PP time, figure on a modest drop of his Sh% in the long run (i.e. over multiple seasons), but if he doesn’t then it’ll be a steeper drop.

If he shoots 15% at 5 on 5 for his career, he’d be a rare anomaly, but not unique. Rare enough that he’d have to do it for more like 200 games before I’d think it was more likely than not to continue.

1) Physical presence in front of the net.
2) Intimidating shot from the point.

Schenn’s the better player, but he’ll cost the Flyers a roster player. Gleason won’t – just a draft pick or picks. I’d rather have Gleason because of that.

Gleason is a stay at home defenseman. He picks up blocked shots like it’s nobody’s business. I really like him as a rental, hell I like him as a 6th defenseman with Gus to be honest. Just curious as to what the price is. I wouldn’t trade a first round pick for him, but I might trade a defensive prospect if it gets the job done

I’m leaning Gleason, if I’m playing GM. I don’t want to trade roster players and Gleason is very solid, especially at his price. Excellent 3rd pair guy who could play 2nd pair if needed. Tough as nails, doesn’t seem to make lots of terrible mistakes. In a word, he’s a Flyer kind of guy. OK, 4 words.

Schenn OTOH is a good player, younger with more upside, esp. if Carle walks next year. Schenn is more of a move to help with future planning; Gleason more of a need-it-now move.

The practical decision is Gleason; the ‘smarter’ decision (long-term) might be Schenn.

Again, I come down on the Gleason side based on what we’d likely have to give up to get Schenn the Elder.

I often see you make comments about the preference you have for replacing Lavy and I’m not sure why. While I have no stats to back it up, you seem to be the only one to do so consistently. I see the comment you left and the follow up by mikefive, which summarizes my initial reaction. Now, you’ve been here much longer than I, so maybe there is something I’m missing. Perhaps you wrote a fanpost summarizing your viewpoint, I don’t know. I’m just not seeing the problem(s) you see.
That’s not saying I’ve never had issues w/ Lavy. I found his line-matching, choices of starting goalie, etc. quite irksome in last season’s playoffs, but overall I think he’s done a good job.
Not baiting, nor looking for a fight, despite what M said. But I would be glad to read what you might wish to say on the subject.

its that his system isnt for a team unless they have am allstar defense like we had when pronger was around..his scheme leaves d men constantly scrambling and out of position since they pinch so hard….id love to see a tippet system here with the goalscorers that we have..it would be epic..if he can make a sub par team playoff worthy and mike smith a .920 goalie imagine what he could do in philly

Just curious: Why do we assume that Dave Tippett’s system comes with all the defensive benefits but no offensive consequences? Phoenix is 20th in G/G this year, 14th last year. Maybe the talent up front in Philly is enough to bump that up, but if Tippett’s system is so good defensively, wouldn’t it stand to reason that he sacrifices some offense to accomplish that?

FWIW I also don’t like Lavy, but from a system perspective, and also the line matching stuff that has gone on at times in big games. But outside that, I think he makes a fine motivator and enjoy his personality.

but from a system perspective

OK, please expand on this topic. What’s wrong w/ his system, why, and what changes would you like to see to remedy the problem(s)? Or, is there no remedy short of replacing Lavy, i.e, do you concur w/ CCB that Lavy should be replaced?

can we just imagine..

if cooter turns out to be as defensively sound as richards but with the goal scoring skills of richards and the and the leave it all on the ice(hopefully without the shot blocking) ethic of lappy?……..im getting a little happy in my pants at that thought

Heh, I was wondering if that was what you meant as I read it…otherwise, I was thinking “why not just say the defense of Richards, the goal scoring of Richards, and the leave-it-all-on-the-ice-ishness of Richards”?

by Eric T. on Jan 18, 2012 2:54 PM EST up reply actions

richards wasnt the natural goal scorer that carter was and carter wasnt a leave it all on the ice guy like lappy, or even richards……….oh shit

BSH SAT word problem

Player Carter starts the game in the neutral zone and carries the puck 65 feet towards the opposing goal. He shoots, missing the net. Player Richards retreats to the defensive zone 123 feet and breaks up the opposition rush in a way that goes largely unnoticed. Player Laperriere places all of his possessions 47 feet away from his team’s defending goal and heads towards the bench.

Given these facts:
Where do the players meet?
Relative to the goal, in which direction did Player Carter’s shot miss?
When is last call where they meet, and are they having pre-marital sex yet?
What did Player Pronger do with the puck and why is he such a dick?
How long before everyone is traded or comes down with at least one virus?
