Has anyone ever played an All Star game while suspended?

Simon Gagne AND Mike Richards may move between towns, wear new jerseys and call different arenas home but, at the end of the day, they will both always be Philadelphia Flyers.

One day Sean Couturier will win the Conn Smythe. You heard it here first.

I’ve read enough Rand to stay away from it. She should have stuck strictly with her philosophical writing, she’s a dreadful fiction writer. She wrote like what she was, a philospher. He writing is very didactic and lacked nuance- just too stiff. It was more about clobbering the reader over the head with her ideology.

I don’t know that Orwell inspired his own “religion,” though. Unfortunately, Rand has her own class of followers, some of the more gregarious are referred to as “Ayn Rand Assholes”. And it’s fitting.

Orwell had the courage to attack political tyranny on his own side of the spectrum. He was a socialist but valued individual liberty. There is more nuance in his body of work.

I can only hate him for playing for a conference rival, he’s free to say and do as he pleases. But to say it has nothing to do with politics or party is a bit disingenuous. It may have nothing to do with party, but does have to do with politics. I like that piece from Backhand Shelf though I wasn’t crazy about this line.

Whatever happened in Boston on Sunday is beyond Bryzgalov’s blame, but anytime you’re looking enough to throw a five-spot on Tim Thomas and the Boston Bruins is a game that you should win.

And I was adamantly opposed to signing the guy, so I’m not an apologist for him but given the article is about how Bryz was a bad signing, that sentence seems very “read between the line-ish”. Plus, the Flyers played here not in Boston.

by j reed on Jan 24, 2012 7:30 AM EST reply actions

While that game wasn’t on Bryz he definitely sucked it up enough to give up 2 goals that he never should have, which could have been the difference between a W and an L.

by EREX21 on Jan 24, 2012 7:41 AM EST up reply actions

I’m not gonna fault a goalie for anything when they are made to (or asked, but he wouldn’t say no so I’ll just stick to made to) play back to back games simply because they shouldn’t unless it’s an emergency.

Cue BROKEN RECORD. The amount of force a goalie subjects his lower body and hips to when they drop into the butterfly postion is the equivalent of an OLYPMIC clean and jerk. So playing on back to back days is similiar to doing functional weight lifting – deadlifts, squats, good mornings, clean and jerks, snatches, lunges, etc. with maximal to submaximal loads two days in a row. I shouldn’t have to explain why that is bad on this blog at least to the hockey players. Not to mention the average goalie wears 50 lbs. of pads so that requires alot of muscle endurance and finally the additional CNS strain of spending a hour in a hyper-vigilant state and having a hard rubber disk flung at you at high speeds. Personally given that work load I wouldn’t put a goalie thru back to back games esp. when I have an excellent well rested replacement. As such I don’t feel I can fairly critique a goalie’s performance when they are subjected to such loads.

by j reed on Jan 24, 2012 8:41 AM EST up reply actions

I would never put goalies through back to backs but that’s my uninformed opinion since I’m not a coach and wasn’t a goalie.

After all those consecutive-day ardors for Bryz, why not toss the SO bone to Bob in the Boston game? You get a fresh goalie hungry to make a mark,. And it could work the other way, too, with Bob yielding to a fresh Bryz after playing to a tie. The first shot that’s stopped will make Lav look like a genius.

by Lesion of Doom on Jan 24, 2012 10:20 AM EST up reply actions

Ed Snider, Homer and Lavi just need to hang their heads and admit they made a mistake and make Bob the starting goalie. Just because Bryz makes more coin is no reason to start him over a goalie that the team can trust and one that can obviously win you games.

Bob is the goalie this team should have been built around from the get go. Bob as the number one and a somewhat cheap tenured back-up goalie that could help Bob deal with the pressure as a number one goalie, oh wait I forgot he now plays in Carolina. :(

My teams are the Flyers, Phillies and the Steelers. Deal with it.

This offseason would be amazing if we had an extra 5 million in cap space by getting rid of his contract. Suter would probably be coming to Philly on a long-term front-loaded deal with NMC.

Really none of this is Lavi’s fault. I am surprised for a guy who has shown an intolerance for less than stellar goaltending and a hair trigger for pulling goalies hasn’t given Bob more time, maybe it’s out of his control which would suck even more. However, that all said, goaltending is a roller-coaster your can’t come out and say he sucks, we messed up, he’s finished in this town after 1/2 a season. That is just as fool hardy as signing him in the first place. Sit him a little more but how does anyone not know the next game he drives to the rink a different way, spills coffee in his lap, singes his nuts and puts up three shutouts in a row? That is how unpredictable goaltending is. And until he totally bombs in the playoffs and goes stone nuts like Czechmanek you have to let this run its course without compounding mistakes. IMO ;-)

Really none of this is Lavi’s fault.

I disagree. In my opinion this I put this mostly on Snider for being a greedy fool who doesn’t understand the game. And then it falls on Lavi who pushed Snider to this by the way he handled Bob last season and by the way he handled the goalies in the playoffs. And who knows, after the season he may have agreed with Snider that the team needed a number one, he also may have said that they are fine with Bob, so really I have no idea where Lavi stood on the issue. He never publicly said anything one way or the other but the way he handled things is why Snider forced Homer to go out and get Bryz.

Lavi has no control on what goalie Holmgren and his staff scouted and signed. Everyone seems pissed at the contract cost to performance results, a very small sample on this team mind you. And I of all people hate to say this, but his performance falls into a pattern Bryz has statistically shown over his history. Right now he is at the bottom of his curve, but it is what it is, everyone needs to relax and stop blaming everything on the goaltender. This d is stretched to the max and without a leader, we are playing with a minimum of 4 rookies per game and we are in the top 4 of the conference. It ain’t all that bad. It sure ain’t the time to be goaltender hating. Do I wish the guy could miraculously steal us a game or two, pitch a shut out, sure.

I never said Lavi had any control over any of that.

What I did say is that the way Lavi handled things is what forced Snider to go ape shit and demand Homer go out and get a goalie. If Lavi had used half a brain cell and handled his goalies properly last year there is a very realistic possibility that Bryz would not be on this team.

You made a couple of good points in your article, CCB, but the handling of the goalies in such an atrocious manner I don’t feel can be laid all at Laviolette’s feet. Such ridiculous maneuverings, I think, only came about because Bob/Reese said something about being exhausted. Everyone could see it by the end of the season, but I doubt the carousel would have started spinning unless Lavy felt he had no choice. It makes absolutely no sense to me otherwise.

Actually we agree, but what else could Lavy do???? I said a hundred times last year he should have given him some rest but he really didn’t have a lot of options. No one really knows how playing decisions get made. A lot goes on behind the scenes. But no one makes decisions to purposely screw the team. There is a lot of criticism of the WIP mentality I read by a lot of commenters. But Bryz has struggled and every other comment is eat his contract and ship him off to Siberia. And one guy even wants to fire the coach who has a Siberian bound starting goaltender, 1/3 of his roster is rookies and the team sits 6 points out the the number 1 spot in the whole league.

He’s also guilty of playing the cold hand. Evidenced by his playing Bob 10 times out of 16 despite his having a 0.893 Sv% in his 10 games and Boucher having a 0.923 in his 6.

Laviolette mishandled Bob last year, period. He played him when he was hot and he played him when he was cold, then panicked in the playoffs.

If in those 6 games you noted Boucher didn’t throw up a .929 and a.931 in two while in the other 4 games he having a .862, .782, .880 and .902. Not really a sign of rock solid stability. Yea hang on the overall .923 while going 2-4. 4 losses is what Lavy is reacting to not overall save percentage.

Boucher was 3-2-1 in his 6 starts during that 6 game stretch – from February 18th through March 23rd. I don’t know where you got your numbers from, since he threw up 949, 862, 778 (in a game where Bob came in and posted an 833 in relief), 931, 909, 880, 929.

In that same stretch, Bob went 3-3-2 with two no decisions (one was the Rangers game, another was him getting yanked against Washington after giving up 3 goals on 9 shots. Boucher came in and got the team a point).

So it’s not the losses, since your numbers are wrong. Both had 3 wins, Bob had more regulation losses, both goalies were pulled once – except Boucher came in and got a point, Bob came in and got torched as well.

Try again.

How are you disputing this? The Flyers scored 2 goals or more in 9 of Bob’s 10 games. They scored 3 goals or more in 6 of the 10 games, and he could only win 3 of them.

But no, Lavy went with the guy who got W’s. Come on, M. Not only is this a bad metric, it doesn’t take you to the conclusion you want.

I am just looking at this as neither goalie proved they were clear cut starters during the span that you believe it was Boucher. What good is a sv% in a loss. The only thing matters is the w’s. But again neither guy stood head and shoulders over the other guy other then in small spans. Hell Bob threw in a couple great games in losses as well.

I am just looking at this as neither goalie proved they were clear cut starters during the span that you believe it was Boucher.

But one guy proved to be performing very poorly, and Lavy played him 67% of the time despite this. The other guy proved to be performing at an average rate, and he only received 33% of playing time despite this.

From January 23rd, Bob got 60% of the starts despite going 6-5-2, two no decisions, and 0.902 compared to Boucher going 6-2-2, one no decision (relief appearance) and 0.930.

Lavy is guilty of more than “going with the hot hand”. He’s guilty of playing the cold one too.

I guess what you are getting at is that Lavi couldn’t play a completely wiped out Bob in playoffs because he over road his hot hand during the season in order to get to the playoffs. And Boucher for as much as everyone loves him is just not a number 1 goaltender especially at this stage of his career, which has always been a roller coaster. Leighton is just a useless situation without a solid defense which was depleted without Pronger and a worn out SOD. Really the whole thing was a mess and no one can really say what caused what. That team was not going to make waves in the playoffs last year and that was evident in late February. If you want to blame all of that on Lavy I see your point, I guess.

I know I remember that run in 2000, until it ended. And a lot of goalies have outplayed Ryan Miller seeing as he has never won anything to prove other wise. I don’t think you and I disagree other then how poorly I seem to put out my point of view. I guess how I see things is how being in 4th place in the east is not an example of how Bryz is a waste of everything and Lavy is totally incompetent. 6 rookies and we lost to what is arguably the best team in the league Sunday in a shootout.

Everyone seems pissed at the contract cost to performance results, a very small sample on this team mind you.

What do you mean by “a very small sample on this team”?

It sure ain’t the time to be goaltender hating.

I don’t know, a 0.905 ESS% – 60th best in the NHL – with an 0.895 Sv% – 5th worst in the NHL – seems like a damn good time to be goaltender hating.

I think Lavi should man up and make Bob the starter for a multiple game stretch and see what happens. If Bob is still able to put up the same or better numbers well, the proof is in the pudding.

Then do the same with Bryz, if he pulls himself together and has a good stretch, great. If not look at Snider and Homer and say, now what do you want to do?

Again I agree, In reality he should be playing Bob more at this point, except he has a GM and an owner glaring at him about the 51 million dollar goalie that needs to work himself out of the funk. I don’t know how much pressure Lavy is getting to play Bryz. Or if he he believes maybe giving the high paid starter more rope to work his way out of the slump is the right plan. Because the last time he played Bob to much he couldn’t handle the load. One year later and the guy is definitely able to play 20 starts in 25 games? Damed if he does….

It’s easy to hyperbolize the other side of the argument, but it doesn’t make your argument look good.

You contradict yourself by saying Lavy has a GM and owner “glaring at him” to play Bryz then immediately say “I don’t know how much pressure” he’s getting.

We are arguing that Bob should be getting the majority of starts, not that the should get 80% of them (20 of 25, for those math impaired). It’s not damned if he does, since that’s just as dumb.

The argument is to stop being dumb, not swing to the other extreme of dumb.

How you got on this side is by taking what people say, throwing it into hyperbolic range, and saying you disagree with that.

Essentially, you are fighting a strawman. The argument isn’t that Bob should play 20 of 25 games or that Laviolette is an idiot, two things which you have been fighting against.

The argument is that Bryz should not be playing 4 out of 5, Bob should be playing 3 out of 5. The argument is that Laviolette mishandles goalies, he did it last year and he’s doing it again. That doesn’t make him an idiot, despite you projecting that statement onto me.

and this is where it started or it went downhill in my case:

Ed Snider, Homer and Lavi just need to hang their heads and admit they made a mistake and make Bob the starting goalie. Just because Bryz makes more coin is no reason to start him over a goalie that the team can trust and one that can obviously win you games.

Nothing obvious about goaltending.

Can we leave governmental politics out of sports please? Is it disrespectful of Thomas to decline to join the rest of the team on the visit, Yes. But I can give a number of reasons (non-political) why a hockey player wouldn’t be terribly enthralled to accept a visit by President Obama, two simple ones would be, he probably cares as much about hockey as ESPN does, and most players (though Thomas is an exception in this case) are not even US citizens.

OK. I just thought “[someone] is saying Thomas is an American so you can eliminate that choice” sounded more like a clarification of “well, he knows for a fact Thomas is an American. So that leaves out that choice” than of “Those reasons have nothing to do with the situation.”

Well, I was taking the more obvious view and trying to keep the politics out of it in this case, so just saying the non-political views to which bfrank posted above obviously don’t have anything to do with this since TT is an American.

Yeah, I…ugh, this so isn’t worth the work for what was supposed to be just a humorous diction note. But since we’re in it now, I guess I have to dig myself out.

  • Snevik said “those aren’t the reasons”
  • reaper said “how do you know?”
  • You said “Thomas is American, so cross that one off.”
  • reaper said “huh?”
  • You said “He‘s saying that Thomas is an American, so not-being-American isn’t the reason he isn’t going.”

But that’s not what Snevik said; that’s what you said (Snevik said neither was the reason). So it sounded to me like you referred to yourself as “he”.

Tim Thomas

I think what he did was a selfish thing to do. He put his ideology first and his team second. And as we all know hockey is a team sport, and he should be a good soldier for the sake of the team. It’s not that I don’t agree with Thomas, I just don’t agree with his choices. And what would of been done if Chara said the same?

I respect what TT did. He had every right to do it. Speaking out politically like that takes balls, whether you agree or not. He’ll catch so much flak for that. For any president, having your picture taken with teams (especially hockey in this case) is political. Politics and sports don’t go together.

Your comment contradictes it self. Commending him for taking a stand for his political beliefs, than stating sports and politics don’t belong together. What he did was selfish and you can’t dispute that. You do what is good for the team period. You bite your tounge and go in there with your teammates, you go for the guys you battle for everyday. You do it for them, not for your political views.

I was commending him bc it took a lot of gall to do what he did, right or not. I don’t think he should have said anything tho, b/c it starts a firestorm like this. It was a personal decision, no one was required to go. If he was required and he refused it would be an issue. It wasn’t selfish, it was a personal decision. Him not going doesn’t affect the Bruins season or anything else. His teammates respected his decision, and thats all that matters.

by SkookFlyerfan on Jan 24, 2012 9:59 AM EST up reply actions

We don’t know if his teammates respected it. There’s outright respect and then there’s grudging respect. Personal decisions are often selfish.

The camp ran from the 70s until some time in the 90s. It was about a mile further out on Sleepy Hollow, past the s-turn in the road by the church/cemetery. It was down a long driveway behind a couple of farms. The only way you’d know it was there was a small sign out front by the road that read “Camp Nometne”. Nometne is the Latvian word for “camp”. It attracted Latvian kids from all over the East Coast. Good times, back in the day.

Both “tea” and “chai” stem from different pronunciations of the same original Chinese word: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tea#The_word_tea

Looks like Mandarin “cha” became Persian “chay”, which in turn led to the modern “chai”. So yes, “chai tea” is “tea tea”. The Indian spiced tea to which you are referring is masala chai.

Nielsen ratings are ridiculously flawed

They use an absurdly small sample size, only about 25,000 homes, to measure the whole of US TV viewership.

The sample is also highly unscientific, they pick and choose their homes, leading to inherent biases.

So when they say that “3000” households watch the Panthers in Miami, that means that only 1 of the 500 or so Nielsen households in south Florida was tuned in. That’s before you even look at the demographic makeup of the households.

Flyers, Phillies, Union, Eagles, Phantoms, Wings.

Just gonna completely disregard that that goal in fact wasn’t scored on the short side, but when the defenseman failed to get to the puck before the crashing forward

Is Matt Read not in that game at all? Do I need to create him myself? I just dl’d the roster updates and I assumed he’d be on the team but he’s not.

Why I'll take Bob over Tim Thomas any day of the week

I found it interesting to see this from Joe Haggerty’s take on Thomas:

But Thomas made a pretty symbolic change at the beginning of last season when he drained the Black and Gold colors from his goaltending pads and goalie mask after a summer of trade rumors. Thomas removed the Bruins logo from his mask and instead replaced it with an image of the lucky coin he wears around his neck.bq,

Haggerty goes on to say that Thomas at that point was playing for himself first and the team second.

One of the things that I admire about our “back-up” Russian goalie who is always the subject of trade rumours is that it is always team first for him. His attitude is that you don’t do anything to disrespect your teammates. It’s reflected in his comments to the media and in his work ethic on and off the ice.

"I will not risk answering your question" Why we love Bob
And yes, I am a female redhead.

but the problem with labeling some1 in politics a racist is that its subjective due to the other sides thought processes….simply because a rep drops funding from a failing inner cuty program, doesnt mean they hate black people. it means the money could go toward a program that actually helps…. or mathews famous “calling obama the welfare president is racist” isnt racist when more people have signed onto welfare under his term than any1 in a long long time, and its racist for mathews to think that because then matthews is making a correlation between welfare and black people….frankly for us to proceed forward the gotcha politics and the baiting has to stop from both sides

but who decides what is “baiting?” this line from your comment

when more people have signed onto welfare under his term than any1 in a long long time

does an excellent job of baiting me. I’m on the hook, because it is easy to infer that you believe the high welfare exists because Obama is president, when it fails to take into account the utter economic disaster that is the shared responsibility of a lot of people with political and financial power and that was handed to Obama.

I’m not saying you’re specifically race-baiting. I don’t know that. But it’s certainly careless if not hypocritical to ask for a stop to baiting and gotchas when you have a perfect example of it in your comment. Tend your own garden and all that….

Who knew???
