Video: Dan Carcillo is dumb, won't be playing Thursday vs. Flyers

There was a time when I thought Dan Carcillo was becoming a smart hockey player. It was after that whole "hey, let me sucker punch you, Matt Bradley" thing back in 2009 during Peter Laviolette's first game as head coach, and as that season progressed, Carcillo seemed to work on his discipline. I was impressed with the strides he made.

Oh, how naive I was. Behold, his latest idiot move from last night's Blackhawks vs. Oilers game.

Carcillo's yet to be suspended for the hit, but that's only a matter of time. The Flyers host the Blackhawks on Thursday night, and he'll probably be serving the first game of a very long suspension that evening.

Yeah, it’s not a hit from behind, but it’s boarding, and clearly so; proximity to the boards is irrelevant the way the rule is written, contact with the boards is what matters:

41.1 Boarding – A boarding penalty shall be imposed on any player or goalkeeper who checks or pushes a defenseless opponent in such a manner that causes the opponent to hit or impact the boards violently in the boards. The severity of the penalty, based upon the impact with the boards, shall be at the discretion of the Referee.
There is an enormous amount of judgment involved in the application of this rule by the Referees. The onus is on the player applying the check to ensure his opponent is not in a defenseless position and if so, he must avoid or minimize the contact. However, in determining wheter such contact could have been avoided, the circumstances of the check, including whether the opponent put himself in a vulnerable position immediately prior to or simultaneously with the check or whether the check was unavoidable can be considered. This balance must be considered by the Referees when applying this rule.

well that kinda blows because what constitutes defensless? arent you taught young to be aware? this means that a ref can call absolutely any hard check at the boards a penalty

by DLJr on Jan 3, 2012 12:21 PM EST up reply actions

Reaper and DLJr

I am a hockey ref (youth through College) and the way they explain boarding to us and for us to interpret the rules is…

Any use of the Boards in a dangerous or excessive fashion. Typically hits from 3+ feet away from the boards where the player is hit into the boards violently is considered boarding.

The carcillo hit is clearly a boarding penalty by the way the rules are supposed to be interpreted. Violent/excessive/dangerous use of the boards = check, more than 3 feet from the boards = check ===> boarding penalty

The purpose of the boarding penalty is for hits like this where it is shoulder to shoulder (or other legal hit) where the player is thrown uncontrollably into the boards.

by TreKronor488 on Jan 3, 2012 12:33 PM EST up reply actions

No where am I saying it isn’t a boarding penalty, in fact, I said it was a boarding penalty, and clearly so.

FWIW, they use a different set of rules in the NHL from USA Hockey rules (used in youth hockey), which I’m sure you know. Not all are different, but some are. I know tripping is one of them, when any player deliberately leaves their feet, that drives me up a wall.

being obnoxious and self righteous while ignoring the point since 9/29/11

by DLJr on Jan 3, 2012 12:41 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah

I wasn’t saying you weren’t saying that it wasn’t a penalty. I was just letting you guys know how the refs are taught.

And I hate how the rules are different for every age group, Juniors have their own rules, College own rules, highschool own rules, youth a whole new set of rules. 95% of the rules are the same but the wording in some is slightly different which changes the rule. I.e. in HS if you leave your feet and get the puck first and then take the guys legs out it’s legal but in USA Hockey no matter what it’s a trip and then juniors has their own version of the rule.

As far as NHL vs. USAHockey for boarding I believe the rule is in essence the same but the NHL is still more relaxed in order to maintain some of the huge hits, whereas in USA the emphasis is more on the kid’s safety than big hits

by TreKronor488 on Jan 3, 2012 12:57 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, I can only speak to USA Hockey rules because that’s the only experience I have from a reffing perspective. It always boggled my mind. But yeah, from what I can remember, the essence of boarding is the same with only slight differences in wording.

I just threw it out there because I’m not sure if people realize there are different rules at different levels. I assume most people are aware of NHL versus IIHF, but I’m not sure how aware they are of the differences in rules as you progress through the levels within North America. As a player going through the changes I can tell you I only learned of the differences when a new call or non-call would come up, I would complain to the ref, then I would have it explained to me during or after the game. Just one of those odd things.

41.1 Boarding – A boarding penalty shall be imposed on any player or goalkeeper who checks or pushes a defenseless opponent in such a manner that causes the opponent to hit or impact the boards violently in the boards.

Seems pretty clear. If you check or push a guy, causing him to hit the boards violently, it’s a penalty.

It’s up to the ref to decide what constitutes “violently”, but it doesn’t matter if the hit’s at center ice — if you launch the guy 52 feet through the air and he hits the boards violently, they can call a penalty.

the other player is defenseless when Carcillo did not pursue the puck. This is what makes Carcillo a punk because he never tried to play the puck even though he had a clear path and was winning the foot race. The defenseman was pursuing the puck not engaging in the contact.

Have you ever been in that situation on the ice? Your directive is to get the puck, especially when you are a defenseman in the defensive zone. No one cares if you are putting yourself in a good position when you get beat to a puck. Carcillo took advantage of the situation. The problem is he is not following his directive of getting to the puck first at all costs, he pulls up notices the vulnerable defenseman and punishes him.

FWIW I don’t think it’s as “dirty” as everyone is reacting to it. Kind of one of those things. For a race to the puck on the boards when I’m close to even with a player I typically initiate contact to avoid a more dangerous collision at the boards, which I think is what happens here; the result however, is quite unfortunate and will result in suspension. In theory I don’t have a problem with what I suspect is Carcillo’s thought process here, “initiate body contact, avoid getting crushed on the boards or held up, allow to win puck cleanly, continue play.”

I’m sure others disagree.

Yeah, even without the other person bracing for contact, I typically will lower my shoulder and bump or brace in order to give myself room to make a better play on the puck because I assume contact will be coming in those situations. I want to assume that’s the thought process here, but him extending his arms makes me question it; or it’s at least the point where I go from not having an issue with it from a dirty versus clean perspective to viewing it as dirty. In general though, I don’t mind contact in those situations (just my personal opinion, heck I still expect contact in those situations now and everything is no check at my age), but the arms definitely make it suspension worthy and bring it in to the realm of a dirty play.

So I agree it’s dirty, but I’m less appalled by it than you haha.

You and Cillo should just go and get drunk. :-)

Haha… Yes, we’ll have an underage drinking party. Maybe we can meet up at the game and get someone to buy us a few beers.

by Flyers#13 on Jan 3, 2012 3:42 PM EST up reply actions

And that would not be normal how?

Gosh don’t tell everyone….our delinquent underage drinking parties are a secret!

That could actually work. Minus the fact I’m going with my dad

Haha, yeah. I doubt my mom and step-dad would allow it either. We can lie and say we’re going to the bathroom.

by Flyers#13 on Jan 3, 2012 4:27 PM EST up reply actions

Plus the fact I don’t drink (except for when my gramma tries to give me whine, but thats a whole different story).

We could always find a way into the press box where Dan is watching the game from his seat of shame….that could be very very fun

OH, good idea! We’ll have to come up with a way to get by the security, though.

by Flyers#13 on Jan 3, 2012 4:33 PM EST up reply actions

Since Travis never covers games live any more, I’m sure he can leave one of you his press pass, no questions asked.

I’ve been steering clear of this one. Aside from the response to Cillo’s “balls” comment above. :-p

…I meant to get into the press box. With a pass and the attire to match, it would be easier to get in

Yeah, I was more so referring to your partner in crime, I just happen to come back to the thread after your responded to her.

I’m sure you are both well behaved, innocent, and respectable young women; it’s how I picture all young girls for the sake of my future sanity if my future child should be a girl.
