So an ASG in Columbus…aside from their team being AHL equivalent, how do they do with Attendance? Or is this a way to try and drum up some interest?
Also, I didn’t watch the ASG, I can’t, it’s not hockey. I did watch some of the Skills Comp, also not hockey but at least it isn’t meant to be.

Also, thanks for the Bday shout-out.

I think a) It’s a nice arena; b) Columbus is attempting to revitalize an area; and c) to reward the fans for still showing up despite having no NHL team.
I like the move, personally. Keep putting the Winter Classic in the NHL elites (Pittsburgh, Philly, Boston, New York, Detroit) and keep giving the bottom feeders the All-Star Game (Since 2003, they have been in Columbus, Ottawa, Carolina, Montreal, Atlanta, Dallas, Minnesota, Florida).
I love it (except for that one Montreal game. Eff that).

I’m with Geoff on this one, Columbus obviously needs the attention and revenue it will draw to them more than we do.

It skirts the edge of being chick flickish, but it’s redeemed by both the humor and the action scenes (which are actually rather well choreographed for both its time and genre). It also doesn’t hurt that it’s deliberately self-mocking, and the cast is perfect for the film.

And, honestly, there’s nothing wrong with a well-executed chick flick. I can watch a dick flick, dudes can watch chick flicks, there are no limits.

Still hoping for the Winter Classic to be played in San Jose or LA. My understanding is that they can deal with higher temperatures for the ice but rain issues that came up in the last two are the big problem. Apparently they played an outdoor game in Vegas once.

Interesting, because in Philly this year the talk was about the direct sunlight softening up the ice to the point where you wouldn’t want to skate on it, which I think would be worse in either of those cities.

Found this article on the game in Las Vegas in 1991. Looks like they covered it and played the game after the sunset, so you are probably right about the direct sunlight.
That would be a pretty big problem. I guess they could start the game shortly after sunset and still have it be primetime on the East coast, but they’d need an indoor rink for the guys to warm up. Obviously it’s never going to happen since it goes against the narratives they are trying to put out there for Winter Classic but it would be pretty cool.

The NHL and NHLPA said serious CBA negotiations won’t start until after the playoffs. This shouldn’t make me nervous, but it does
There is where I disagree with you this morning Geoff, I think it should make you nervous. Just off the top of my head, I can think of at least a half dozen things over which I think the league and players association will try to draw lines in the sand.
I’m a little worried that this is a staring contest to see which side gives in and says “okay we need to start talking”, but the league and players association need to at least start preliminary talks before I relax, at least to establish exactly which items are going to be the worst disagreements.
(For anyone curious, those first half dozen issues I thought of were the floor calculation, the escalator clause, 100% rule, the LTIR loophole, revenue sharing, and a potential salary rollback/cap reduction for 2012-13. There are soooo many more if I think about it longer)
Warning: Arguing the NHL CBA with me could be hazardous to your mental health. Proceed at your own risk.
Stop it. If I tell myself it shouldn’t make me nervous, I can ignore how nervous I am.

Couturier Usage
I know this was a major topic of discussion during the first few weeks of the season and the Copper and Blue article reminded me of it.
What does everyone think of how Cooter has been used so far this year?
I think what Lavi is doing is just right for Cooter, Mostly because i believe he sees the lines as a 1, 2a, 2b, and 3 and so do i to some extent . If Jody and Sestito are in the lineup we have a fourth line.
Also, Lavi seems to be restricting the rookies especially Cooter’s ice time so that they don’t hit the rookie wall, or if they do it isn’t too bad. Limiting Cooter’s ice time allows him to stay fresh and slowly gain experience and work his way into a top 6 role. As we have seen as he has been playing better is confidence seems to increase and he in turn is taking more shots, being more aggressive, which helped him to the 5 game goal scoring streak. I think this is an effective use of his 1st year of his ELC because it will benefit him more than another year in Juniors would have
Wow, I wish a certain person I used to follow on twitter would read this. Just couldn’t get it though their skull he’s a very young rookie and shouldn’t be seeing top minutes all season. Just got annoying hearing it every game, five or so times, had to un-follow.

I’m liking it a lot more lately. My problem has come when Max Talbot has been put on the 3rd line with some nice players (Eg Read, Simmonds, etc), and Couturier has been left with Shelley, Rinaldo and Zolniercyk.
I mean, I like Talbot, he’s a fair bit more threatening than I thought, but this is really as good as it gets for him, while Couturier has a big upside threatening to get out over the next few years. And its not going to develop playing with Jody Shelley.
Now that we’re seeing him on the 2nd/3rd line due to all the injuries? Awesome, and I don’t want it to end. I hope that when Jagr, Briere, and JVR are back, he doesn’t get bumped down again. Let Talbot suffer at 5 on 5 for now.
Posting all the way from sunny Manchester, England.

They’re wasting his 18 year old season on this role at the expense of his 26 year old season.

Hartnell embraced the ASG and as he said, he doesn’t know if he’ll be back there again. That is completely the right attitude and I respect him even more now (if that’s possible).
The DGB was great as always… so many digs that I don’t know which one is my favorite.

I saw the skills competition, but missed the draft and game. Was very proud of our guys for their showing in the skills competition. Especially Read on the accuracy and Hartnell on the one-timers. It was also great to watch my stepdad have to eat his words when he scoffed at Timonen coming up to center ice for the shootout, (saying he had no moves, it’d be boring and stupid, and he didn’t have a chance in hell of scoring), and then he made a damn fine move and buried it. He’s such a tool sometimes…
Anyway, I was off skiing all weekend. What’d I miss?

Listening to Roenick have to eat his words in the broadcast booth was priceless, too. He said something like “I’m predicting Timonen to just take a straight shot here; no dekes, no fancy moves”; I don’t remember the exact wording. But the triumph was awesome, so it’s cool that you got to have that feeling with your stepdad in the same room.

Yeah, he basically said the same exact thing as JR, but just before JR said it. So he was even more smug and sure of his prediction when JR agreed with him. Which made Kimmo’s moves and goal all the more beautiful. I really couldn’t have asked for more.

Yeah, I don’t understand why it doesn’t show all the comments sometimes.

Since I don’t have an iOS or Android phone, but like to browse from my old iPAQ (windows mobile) when I’m on the couch and not in front of my computer, I wish the mobile page worked a little better for commenting and skipping to the next new comment. But I know I’m in the obsolete minority, so I don’t expect to see any changes.

The biggest feature I’d like to see is being able to distinguish between new and old comments like the regular page does. A way to skip to the next new comment would be nice too, but at a minimum having the new comments highlighted so I can see them easier would be amazing. Other things, like the ability to rec, blockquote, link, picture, would also be nice. (Some of them can already be done by writing the html, but not rec’ing.) But new vs old comments is by far the biggest drawback to the mobile page, IMO.

Ah, yeah. The iOS app distinguishes between old and new (I’m sure the Android does too), but not the rest.
I agree with you though.

Android distinguishes between old and new, and has a next new comment button, but it doesn’t remember what’s been seen across platforms. If I see a comment on the computer, it’s new to Android, and vice versa.

My brother in law, a serial Ranger fan and hater of all things Philly sports, admitted after the ASG weekend he can no longer hate Hartsy and G.
Yea, we like them too.

I didn’t see the whole game, but the part where G was trying to push Hartnell over to add tallies to #hartnelldown was awesome.

I think the skills competition allows the players to show their personal side as well.

I’d like to recommend the Fanpost by Everybodyhits about Talbot. He (she?) obviously took a lot of time to think it through, and it is WELL worth the time to read the whole thing.
’Course, I am a tiny bit biased to the subject matter … but it really is good.

From the Flyers Faithful article
In Keith Jones’s book, Jonesy: Put Your Head Down and Skate: The Improbable Career of Keith Jones, Jones discusses how some NHL teams apparently work out deals with Universities to stash away obscure prospects. Or, at least that was his opinion when the Washington Capitals scouted him and got him a scholarship to attend Western Michigan University and then drafted him in 1988.
Is that what Paul Holmgren has been doing as a way of building up the prospect pool without using the draft?
Other than this one personal anecdote, is there any proof that this sort of thing actually occurs? If a guy isn’t drafted in the 2-3 years that he’s eligible, a team would be better off signing him to a minor league deal for developmental purposes.
I think it’s one of those “We think you could become an NHL player, but you can’t even play in the AHL yet. Go to school, we’ll find you a good one, and we’ll watch your development.”
I think it’s less “stashing” as it is “We like you, but you need to go here first.”

I think the “stashing” refers more to hiding the player from the rest of league than it does when we “stash” Walker in the AHL.

But you aren’t hiding them, unless you think the league ignores NCAA hockey.

But how can any NHL team intervene on a player’s behalf regarding where he plays next season without first possessing rights to said player? Granted there is no guarantee that the player will be drafted by that team the next time, indeed he may be selected by a different team, but this still seems to me some kind of circumvention of the CBA or bylaws. The article as worded implies that this practice is more common than any of us suspect.
And what I was saying above was regarding older prospects that are past their eligibility, guys say like Read or Harry Z. Wouldn’t they be better developed in the AHL as opposed to the NCAA? An AHL-only deal doesn’t count against the 50 contract limit nor affect the salary cap and they get to play a longer season than college. The only advantage that I can imagine is that they might get “first line” or “top pairing” minutes in the NCAA as opposed to “bottom six” or “third pairing” minutes in the minors.
the Washington Capitals scouted him and got him a scholarship to attend Western Michigan Universityafter which the Caps made a generous donation earmarked for WMU’s athletic department? Did Ed Snider make a donation to Bemidji State late last year?
/ Before you start, yes, I realize that 1988 was the Middle Ages.
I’m not sure we’re interpreting that statement the same way.
NHL teams getting players scholarships to attend college is not what the Flyers did with Read or Zolnierczyk. Those guys were established NCAA players who the Flyers signed. What you’re suggesting is that, rather than draft Marcel Noebels, the Flyers would tell him to go play for Washington State instead of the Seattle Thunderbirds.
So you have a team who wants to sign a player later, but they don’t want to draft him or show other teams his skills. By process of elimination, you have to have a guy who is either; a) in high school; b) toiling away in a level below the CHL; c) strugglin in the CHL; or d) on an unknown team in Europe.
“Older prospects or those that are past their eligibility”, well, where were they playing the past 2 years? That leaves guys on crappy teams or in a completely different game. Why throw that guy into the AHL when you don’t know how good he is? Get him to the NCAAs – which are, admittedly – less well scouted and see if he does anything.

No, no, I don’t disagree with what you’re saying here. But my first question still stands: how is such a thing not considered circumvention? Or is it? I just found Jones’ opinion that teams do this to be ludicrous to the point of irksome.
I don’t know if it’s circumvention. It’s definitely questionable, but I also haven’t heard of this happening, so I don’t know.

Yeah, 1988 was the Middle Ages. Not the previous CBA from ’95, but the CBA before that.
You also have to remember that unless a team acquires a player’s exclusive rights by drafting, signing a player to a minor league deal means the club does not actually own their rights. They’d be part of the AHL union (the PHPA) and fall under the AHL collective bargaining agreement. The guys you develop down there without drafting them aren’t really protected from being signed by other teams.
Under the current agreement, you can also only hold the exclusive rights to a total of 90 players (that includes your 50 on contracts); so if a player goes to the NCAA without being drafted, they might not be on a lot of team’s radar. If you draft them, they’re taking up space on your 90 man exclusive rights list.
If you read whole Jones’ book, he clearly fell under the “guy who isn’t on most people’s radar” category. He never played Major Junior, but rather he was in Junior B (I think). He got noticed somehow by a Capitals scout and everything started rolling from there. The Capitals didn’t actually own his rights, but nobody else had even heard of him. They advised him to go to that program that they had a relationship with if he wanted a chance; but they didn’t need to own his rights to give him advice of a program where he had a chance to be scouted further. He went (with no actual obligation that they would definitely draft him), they still liked him after he started that program, and then they drafted him after they saw him play against competition a little better than Junior B.

Jones played Junior C at ages 17 and 18, and Junior B at 19. He then played four years in college, and only then became a professional (although to contradict DG, he was drafted before entering college – the draft was June 1988, and Jones played for WMU from 1988-1992). To give some comparisons from the same draft of other Canadian players:
Trevor Linden (#2 overall): played in the WHL at ages 15-17, NHL at 18
Rod Brind’Amour (#9 overall): played in SMHL at 16, SJHL at 17, Michigan State at 18, NHL at 19
Troy Mallette (#21 overall, first in the 2nd round): played in NOHA at 15, OHL at 16-18, NHL at 19
Craig Fisher (#56 overall, 3rd round): played in Junior B at 16 and 17, Miami at 18 and 19, NHL at 19
Mark Recchi (#67 overall, 4th round): BCJHL at 16, WHL at 16-19, NHL at 20
Len Esau (#85 overall, 5th round): SJHL at 18-19, St. Cloud State at 20-21, AHL at 22, NHL at 23
Len Barrie (#124 overall, 6th round): AJHL at 16, WHL 16-20, 1 NHL game at 20, AHL 21-22, NHL at 23
Brad Schlegel (#144 overall, 7th round, 3 after Jones): Junior B at 16, WHL at 17-19, National Team at 20-23, NHL at 23
Tony Twist (#177 overall, 9th round): PCJHL at 17, WHL at 18-19, IHL at 20, NHL at 21
Peter Fiorentino (#215 overall, 11th round): Junior B at 16, OHL at 17-20, IHL at 20-23, first and only NHL game at 23
Claude Lapointe (#234 overall, 12th round): QAAA at 15-16, QMJHL at 17-20, AHL at 21, NHL at 22
Out of those guys, Fisher’s the only other one who didn’t get above Junior B, and even he was younger than Jones by 19 months.
Bob.
No worries about contradicting me, I didn’t look it up. I didn’t think about whether he was drafted first or went to college first and went by the context of the conversation above, where the quote from the Flyers Faithful article seems to imply the “school first then drafted” order. It’s been at least a year and a half since I read the book and it was the library’s copy, so everything I said about Jonesy was straight from my potentially-faulty memory.
Now that you mention it, I remember the joke in the book because he was so surprised to get drafted straight out of Junior B, he had no idea it was coming. His mom or dad: “You’ve been drafted!”, his reaction: “We’re going to war?”, parent: “No, by the Capitals”. Played up for laughs I’m sure, but you’re completely right.

you guys might like the sound of this..im a little sad
“I think we still have four guys (Kimmo Timonen, Braydon Coburn, Matt Carle, Andrej Meszaros) who can play a lot of minutes in all situations,” Holmgren said. “I think the two young kids that we’ve got playing have held their own. So, I don’t feel it (a trade for a No. 1 defenseman) is something we have to do.”
