I was hoping to see Bartulis play in the AHL Classic, but he remains out since before Christmas with what is termed “an undisclosed injury”. Wonder what’s going on with him?

I’m almost disappointed that I’m going to the Phantoms game, finding out that Lappy will be doing color commentary.

Although I had to laugh at part of the email I got from the Flyers about the game:

TRAFFIC ADVISORY

With the stage set for an exciting outdoor game, be sure to allow yourself plenty of time to get to the ballpark. In addition to the Phantoms vs. Hershey Bears game, the Philadelphia 76ers will be hosting their home-opener at 7pm on Friday, January 6th.
Please anticipate higher than normal traffic on the roadways and public transportation during this time.

So in addition to tens of thousands of hockey fans, there might be a few thousand sixers fans? Maybe we should give the guys at LibertyBallers a friendly heads up, they might be expecting the usual smooth sailing getting to a sixers game.

Flyers, Phillies, Union, Eagles, Phantoms, Wings.

by Pelti on Jan 6, 2012 8:19 AM EST reply actions

Not sure if serious

AHL attendance record is 21k. Last year, the Sixers drew 20k fans for the home opener.

Yeah, this year’s AHL game should draw more fans than the previous outdoor games, but it’s not like the Sixers’ attendees will be an irrelevant drop in the bucket.

by Eric T. on Jan 6, 2012 9:21 AM EST up reply actions

Somewhat Serious

Last year the Sixers opened against the Heat and their bandwagon. The next game home game against Atlanta drew only 10,960

2009 against Milwaukee drew 14,638
2008, Toronto, 15,750.

I’d expect about 17k for the Sixers tonight. Not a drop in the bucket, but they’re expecting at least twice as many for the Phantoms game.

Flyers, Phillies, Union, Eagles, Phantoms, Wings.

by Pelti on Jan 6, 2012 9:54 AM EST up reply actions

The Sixers are once again starting to gain relevance in this town. Doug Collins has managed to squeeze every bit of talent out of the players and they are now buying into a team philosophy. There aren’t really any individual players that are selfish or whatnot. (I won’t start the Iggy-takes-the-last-shot argument)

They are fun to watch.

So assuming your guesses are right, and 35k show up for the Phantoms and 17k for the Sixers…

There’s a significant difference in traffic and parking for 35k vs 52k. I don’t see anything wrong with warning the people who are showing up for an AHL game just because it’s a special event that they might miss the start if they don’t plan accordingly.

by Eric T. on Jan 6, 2012 10:47 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah, the warning is fair. My amusement was more in the fact that it’s an email like the Phillies or Eagles might send if the Flyers/Sixers were playing, and the idea that a minor league hockey game will outdraw a pro basketball game.

I’m not sure how many of the season ticket holders that were forced to by tickets, and therefore included in the count, are either, 1, going, or, 2, if they aren’t going, were able to sell their ticket or bothered to sell it.

or bothered to sell it.

I may or may not be going, depends how work finishes up. If I don’t go the tickets will have never been listed, sold, or given away. I know 2 other season ticket holders in the same boat. I know that’s only 3 people, but given the relative low cost of this game compared to the entire package you were forced to purchase and relative lack of demand, I could picture a significant portion of season ticket holders doing the same. I know another handful of season ticket holders who gave them away, so it could be that as well and it could be close to a sellout.

Just throwing it out there as a possibility.

That goal spares us the agony of totally over analyzing the team and the goaltender. Or does it. I have been trying to let Bryz work his way through the woods without getting nuts like most of the commenters have gotten. In reality goaltending is a nutty job usually played by nutty guys. In 9 years I am sure we are going to endure the rollercoaster whether it is one guy or 5, sort of like the last 9 years. I’m not happy when he plays bad but come on people get a hold of yourselves. Thanks god there was no jones punch last night. We would have lost half the group.

I don’t think anything will prevent us from overanalyzing everything about this team.

I’m not sure I have ever agreed with you more, M.

At least the freaker-outers have a self-consistent position. They believed (wrongly) that there are goalies who can carry their teams every single game; they believed (correctly, given the first assumption) that such a goalie would be worth huge money; they were extremely excited (correctly, given the second assumption) about bringing Bryzgalov in; and now they are incredibly disappointed and frustrated that Bryzgalov has not turned out to be one of their mythical great-in-every-game goalies.

His average before this year was .916. Last year, Bobrovsky was at .915. This is precisely why we argued on this site that we shouldn’t expect Bryzgalov to dramatically improve the Flyers goaltending.

With that being said, I’m also disappointed that he’s nowhere near .916; he’s definitely having a crappy year so far, worse than I would have thought was likely. But again — even over the last two years when he has been very good, he’s had stretches like this before. It’s just how goaltending is: prone to variance.

by reaper1221 on Jan 6, 2012 11:01 AM EST up reply actions

It was .916; it’s .914 now. (Oof.)

In the last four years, he posted .920, .906, .920, .921. The average of those four years is .9168. I can see why someone might look at that and hope for .920 (the median result), but unless he was hurt that year (and he played 65 games), it’s just as much a reflection of his talent as the others and should be averaged in.

Also, Jeffie focused on just the last two years (the .920 and .921) in his comparison to past years, but the way Bryzgalov landed at .906 in ‘08-09 was by posting a .896 save percentage over the final 31 games that year. So this year’s results are definitely within the range of what we should expect from him, though it should be unusual.

by Eric T. on Jan 6, 2012 11:07 AM EST up reply actions

Well, even if his current sv% on the season is well below his career average (as well as the league average), let’s look beyond the net, just our of curiosity. Are the Flyers allowing more shots against than they did last year? Are they allowing more than Phoenix did last year? How do our shots and goals for compare to last year?

Ah. Well, I’m nervous about the causal link, but I’ll take a stab at it.

  • He had a .925 save percentage from the opener to the end of his 12-game starting streak (16 games played in 42 days, so I’ll break the season into ~42-day segments).
  • He played in 10 games in the next 43 days, with a .898 save percentage.
  • He played in 8 games in the next 42 days, with a .926 save percentage.
  • He played in 10 games in the next 42 days, with a .908 save percentage.
  • He played in 10 games in the last 42 days, with a .913 save percentage.

by DLJr on Jan 6, 2012 12:22 PM EST up reply actions

I’d bet that he’s not a .925 goaltender in the long term, since no goalie has ever had a career number that high.

So if you mean “why did he stop performing at a .925 clip”, the answer is regression.

If what you mean is “was he at only ~.910 over the last 20 games because that’s his talent level or because he was worn out from that first month of the season”, then that’s unanswerable — it takes a few seasons before we know a goaltender’s true talent, because they’re so variable.

That’s a very good and thorough answer, but I should expect no less.

I’m not saying last years Flyers were as good as the Bruins seem to be at this point, but I don’t think we would have guessed how bad they would go on to be down the stretch and into the playoffs, last year.

Hopefully the Bruins are peaking now and start to head down hill, like the Flyers did last year, and fizzle out when it matters.

If you take Boston out of those figures, the rest of the division’s record is 74-65-21, which based on points percentage would be a pace of about 87 points over the course of the season. I realize small sample size, but that figure of 87 would not be enough to earn a playoff spot in any season in the east since the lockout.

So your assessment of whether a division is shitty is based on whether the bottom four teams average record would make the playoffs? That’s a strange way to do it, but even so…

The bottom four in the Southeast are 70-71-17 (81 points per 82 games). The bottom four in the Northwest are 77-72-15 (84.5 pts per 82). The bottom four in the Pacific are 71-69-19 (83 pts per 82).

So I ask again: is every division but the Atlantic and the Central shitty?

Its always going to depend on how you look at data. I wasn’t using the bottom four for any reason other than my argument was that boston plays in a shitty division, so when you used the whole divisions record, I removed Boston to show how the other teams were. My opinion isn’t necessarily based on that “the bottom 4 teams wouldnt make the playoffs” but it does have some weight in my mind, because as much as a win is a win, when a team like columbus, or edmonton, or the Islanders are you opponent on any given night, as a Boston, or Vancouver, or Philly fan, you expect the team to come away with the 2 points. Boston plays 6 games against 4 teams that, based on my quick record analysis, are against teams where probably 7 or 8 out of 10 times you would expect a team like Boston to come away a winner. Ill do a few things to try to give some not-too-manipulated statistical data to maybe clarify a little more.

Boston plays 6 games against 4 teams that, based on my quick record analysis, are against teams where probably 7 or 8 out of 10 times you would expect a team like Boston to come away a winner.

First of all, I think your perception of how often better teams beat lesser teams is wildly inflated. The league average is about 91 points, so their 87-point-averaging division rivals are just a little below average. A team that will win 7 or 8 times out of 10 against slightly-below-average opponents will presumably win about 7 out of 10 against average opponents and end up with about 57 wins. No team has won more than 54 games since the ‘05-06 Red Wings, so I doubt your estimate of the Bruins’ chances is accurate.

Second of all, you still haven’t answered the question I’ve asked twice. Given that the #2-5 teams in the Southeast, Northwest, and Pacific divisions have even worse records than those on the Northeast, do you think that those divisions are all shitty too?

by Eric T. on Jan 6, 2012 6:41 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, I think they are shitty divisions. They have some good teams, but divisionally, they are the West Division to the 1967 expansion’s east. If the salary cap was supposed to bring parity to the league, it’s done a pretty terrible job. Average league rank of the teams in the divisions are as follows(not including tie breaks, basing solely on points to determine rank/30):

ATL – 13.2 (2 top 10 teams, 1 bottom 10)
NE – 15 (1 top 10 team, 2 bottom 10)
SE – 19.6 (1 top 10 team, 2 bottom 10)
CEN – 11.4 (3 top 10 teams, 1 bottom 10)
NW – 14.6 (2 top 10 teams, 2 bottom 10)
PAC – 16.6 (1 top 10 team, 1 bottom 10)

I go Bananas for Wayne Simmonds.

by bfrank27 on Jan 6, 2012 7:51 PM EST up reply actions

Additionally, in games between divisions, teams win/loss and points percentages against the 6 divisions are as follows (only including games against different division opponents, i.e. Flyers record in games against ATL opponents not included).

Teams Vs. -
ATL – 50.68% Points 43.84% Straight W/L (146 Games)
NE – 55.32% Points 48.94% Straight W/L (141 Games)
SE – 59.80% Points 56.08% Straight W/L (148 Games)
Cen – 52.36% Points 47.3% Straight W/L (148 Games)
NW – 56.47% Points 50.36% Straight W/L (139 Games)
SW – 58.21% Points 53.73% Straight W/L (134 Games)

Now, without doing a whole team by team analysis, I can’t be sure, but I feel pretty comfortable venturing a guess that taking out games against the top ranked team in any division, those numbers will dramatically increase for the NE and the NW divisions, probably the NE more so than the NW, but if we are to take anything from the articles from the flybys about how bad Minnesota really is then their regression to the mean will bring that figure closer to where I would expect it to be based on that division’s performance last year.

I go Bananas for Wayne Simmonds.

by bfrank27 on Jan 6, 2012 8:02 PM EST up reply actions

Also, you can use a league average to determine an average points, but that wont help to calculate any kind of comparison between good teams and bad teams, you have to break it down into groups of some form. Projecting out this year’s teams’ records, assuming current pace for points percentage, the league average comes to 90.89, to give some weight to your figure regarding that, and to use what I’ve calculated to compare with that.

Top 15 vs bottom 15 points averages are:
Top – 102.94
Bottom – 78.83

Thirds:
Top 3rd – 107.03
Middle 3rd – 93.08
Bottom 3rd – 72.56

Groups of 5:
Top 5 – 111.14
Second 5 – 102.92
Third 5 – 94.77
fourth 5 – 91.38
Fifth 5 – 80.76
Bottom 5 – 64.35

Do some of those figures look unreasonable? Yeah, I don’t think there will be 5 teams that get 110+ points, but I am sure there could be 2 or 3. I think the middle 10 in any of my calculations is close since may people think around 90 points is a playoff cutoff, I can see the middle 10 as the group thats fighting for the 5 or 6-8 seeds in both divisions, and the only other number that looks really low as an average is that bottom 5 on the groups of 5 breakdown, again, i dont think there would be 5 teams with as few as 64 points, but I could see one or two.

I go Bananas for Wayne Simmonds.

by bfrank27 on Jan 6, 2012 8:20 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, I think they are shitty divisions.

It seems like we’re in agreement that the NE is an average division, maybe third or fourth best. The only thing we’re in disagreement about is whether it’s fair to use the word “shitty” to describe the average.

I can live with that.

by Eric T. on Jan 6, 2012 8:22 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, maybe I was a little too harsh, I dont think Montreal is a shitty team, but I dont think that Ottawa is as good a team as they are playing right now. Boston is definitely a powerhouse in an average division (10-2 so far in divisional play) though. As a follow up to my previous post, 10-11 point averages by the same groupings above come out to:

top 15 – 102.33
bot 15 – 81.47

top 10 – 104.90
mid 10 – 94.60
bot 10 – 76.20

1st 5 – 108.20
2nd 5 – 101.60
3rd 5 – 97.20
4th 5 – 92.00
5th 5 – 82.60
6th 5 – 69.80

but true that even this way the calculation comes to between 55-60%, though I suppose if you factor in the extra point that could be gained from OT/SO losses, you could perhaps expect a good team to come away from a game against a bad team with at least a point somewhere between 60 and 70% of the time.

I go Bananas for Wayne Simmonds.

Yeah, I need to schedule an appointment with the oral surgeon sometime. Last summer my dentist discovered I have a 5th wisdom tooth that had somehow gone unnoticed when my other 4 were removed 12 years ago. Or, I should say, I discovered it when I felt this hard thing sticking out of my gums that wouldn’t budge and asked what the hell it was. (So if I was cranky last spring, it’s because I was teething!) I just keep putting it off because of grad school and playing concerts/shows and it hasn’t bothered me at all.

Some of the words on Carlin’s original list have since been used to some degree on broadcast television in the United States. The word tits was uttered on the first episode of The Trials of Rosie O’Neill in 1990, sparking some controversy. It has been also uttered more recently in the popular Jimmy Kimmel video “I’m Fucking Ben Affleck,” in which Ben Affleck utters “Hey, Sarah, he’s got bigger tits”, which originally aired on the After Oscar special of the ABC show Jimmy Kimmel Live after the 80th Annual Academy Awards, all without incident.

Fans on the Broad Street Hockey blog lambasted Neary in the comments section, calling him a “moron,” “a nincowpoop” and a “jabroni.”

Instead of just saying that BSH followers ripped Neary in the comments section, they felt it necessary to specify the names used, including that someone called Neary a “Jabroni”. Obviously, this whole story is no laughing matter, but that sentence gave me a chuckle.

Hartnell’s shot was the backbreaker. Keith is getting ready with his stick to meet Hartnell’s when the puck hits the ice. A great play by probably the best player on the ice last night – and there were a lot of good ones.

What the hell is with your end boards – looks like they are made out of super rubber.

your defensive end looks a little suspect at the moment. It seems every team in contention is trying to acquire a solid top for d-man. Doesn’t seem l;ike there are that many available.

From what I’ve seen and read about Shaw – well lets just say he reminded me of Mark Rypien. Rypien had incredibly quick fists and was not afraid of anybody. (i remembe him taking a run at Byfuglien).

Truthfully though, this is the type of fight that needs to be tasken out of the game imo.

End boards are made out of flubber.

Flyers are a pretty "offensive" lot. […] your defensive end looks a little suspect at the moment.

You are confused. The Flyers became a defensive-minded team that would win lots of games 2-0 by trading away their star two-way forwards to make room for a goalie and Jagr. The main stream media told us so.

i'm certainly no authority on Bryz, but the defense was shoddy in front of him last night.

We get the same thing at Second city hockey all the time, especially about Crawford lately. It’s always the goalies fault whne they leti in three or more – ussually with a caveat that "admittedly he didn’t have a lot of help.

Then you get the Thomases and Lundquists who seemingly overcome the mistakes in front of them.

You guys are pretty banged up on the blue line – might have something to do with it.

by wardrums on Jan 6, 2012 11:52 AM EST up reply actions

1st goal was Carle
2nd goal was bad D but still savable
3rd and 4th goals were just every day wrist shots, one by a defenseman.

So 1/2 the goals he gave up were all his fault and one was just bad play from everybody.

by wardrums on Jan 6, 2012 11:59 AM EST up reply actions

I really envy your teams management though. Knowing you have a very good, young goalie for the future, you signed a dependable spot-starter guy for a low contract, instead of spending huge for a guy for 9 years.

by JpH89 on Jan 6, 2012 12:03 PM EST up reply actions

shhhh - don't give Stan any ideas.

Emery has been a very pleasant surprise – quite a character from what i’ve read on him also.

Bryz is a world class goalie – I used to hate Coyote games. It was like trying to get a fastball past Ted Williams.

by wardrums on Jan 6, 2012 12:10 PM EST up reply actions

Bryzgalov actually had good positioning on Kane’s shot, even though he went into the butterfly. He made it so that Kane could only score with an extremely well-placed shot over the shoulder – which he did. My initial reaction was that Bryz screwed up on that, but after the replay he really didn’t.

Yeah. It’s true — when Richards and Carter were traded, most of the MSM stories were “where will we get back the 65 goals they scored?”

And the answer was usually “we’ll get 15 each from Voracek and Simmonds and the new defensive focus with a premier goalie will make up most of the other 35. And even if the goal differential is down a little, that defensive focus is what they need to win in the playoffs.”

Since it’s ESPN, and they know nothing about hockey, it’s no surprise there is no mention of the instigator penalty. IMO, that is the biggest thing keeping players from policing dirty hits themselves on the ice. Instead you end up with fights like the one last night between Rinaldo and Shaw, which, while entertaining, have 0 impact on the game, as far as I can tell.

I just think Betts is better at hockey than Rinaldo.

Rinaldo has a Corsi Rel of -17 while playing with Couturier and Zolnierczyk and starting in the offensive zone 52% of the time.

Last year, Betts had a Corsi Rel of -19 while playing with Powe and Shelley and starting in the offensive zone 27% of the time.

The Corsi is about the same, and I’d call Powe for Zolnierczyk a wash. Then you’re left comparing Couturier to Shelley as a linemate and comparing 52% offensive zone starts to 27%.

Betts was put in much tougher situations and achieved roughly the same results. He’s not nearly as noticeable, but he gets the job done.

Heh. I just got an “NHL Newsletter” e-mail that includes a recap of the Winter Classic, which begins:

The temperature at puck drop for the 2012 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic between the New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers was 41 degrees with a minimal amount of wind swirling around Citizens Bank Park.
Yet I distinctly remember the NBC crew mentioning multiple times that it was very windy, including shots of the flags out straight, and that it kept changing direction, again showing that the American flag had gotten itself tangled. I can’t see the rest of the article because the link doesn’t work (surprise, surprise), but I wonder if the rest of it is from the perspective of Bettman’s dream-world too? :-p

I think the intention was Suter OR Weber, and the rest. So choosing Suter instead of Weber takes 7.5m off of that and you’re back to the $25m ballpark. But I’m sure it’s not that simple, since there are forwards who will need to be signed as well.

Plus the fact that you need to move Pronger, or you can’t sign anyone before he goes to IR on Day 2 of the season. And Lilja is signed for next season. As is Walker. And Carle is NOT, so unless he agrees to the same salary you are looking at a raise there.

And yeah – then you can address the forwards (Jagr, Vorcek, Harry Z, Betts, Testwuide, Holmstrom, Sestito) and the others.

I’ll have to agree, I’d want Suter more than Weber especially if Suter can be had for about 3.5M (which I am sure his price tag will be higher than that in FA). Plus I’ve read that Weber plays much better when Suter is in the lineup and Suter can hold his own.

I think that we may be able to swing a deal for him with the Predators since I think they’d rather keep Weber, and we’ve been trade partners in the past. Plus we’d know more about Pronger’s situation by then if he has a chance of coming back or will be LTIR’ing his skates, so we can re-sign Suter if need be.

Yeah, I didn’t really think too much into the trade (mainly, that we need to give up something lol). But if he is the right price and we don’t need to shake up anything on this roster, sure pull the trigger. If not trading for his rights (which will probably cost a 3rd or 4th rounder) would be the right move I think.

OT

I was looking at some hockey stats earlier today and I was using a couple blank tabs on a work related spreadsheet to calculate some things.

I just realized I saved the file with those tabs still on them.
I also sent that sheet out to some coworkers.

whoops.
