The “witch hunt” began here when all we knew about this guy was he was attacked outside of Geno’s at approximately 7:15 PM on Monday evening wearing a New York Rangers jersey.

by Travis Hughes on Jan 6, 2012 2:22 PM EST up reply actions
This started well before that, and frankly I’m of sick of people making a big deal out of it because he served. The world is filled with good and bad people, both types of people serve in the armed forces, and both types of people don’t deserve to be assaulted over sports, words, and/or booze.
being obnoxious and self righteous while ignoring the point since 9/29/11
yeah, but it still seems like war vets/cops stories get into the news more then if something happened to a normal person. This isn’t the case here, but some outlets may have picked it up just for that reason.
Yes, but the witch hunt here started before the that information was known. And in general, I’m kind of sick of that stuff, it’s the way the world is, I recognize that, but it just drives me nuts, so I ranted.
being obnoxious and self righteous while ignoring the point since 9/29/11
It’s a reasonable comment. Guys (meant as a gender-neutral term here) who serve deserve honor in that context. As far as not getting jumped, they shouldn’t get any additional sympathy imo.
There’s a difference between gratitude/honoring and putting people on a pedestal; that’s where my problem lies. We had a member here that said the earned the right to say offensive things to people because they served; that’s the kind of stuff that drives me nuts. Like “oh hey who cares some people got beat up, wait what, it was a Vet, burn those bastards.” That’s the distinction I’m making and ranting on.
being obnoxious and self righteous while ignoring the point since 9/29/11
I always very tentative to speak my mind on it because I don’t want to be disrespectful to servicemen and women. I’m glad it is coming across okay through the internet; I often fear getting roasted if I hit post on such thoughts.
being obnoxious and self righteous while ignoring the point since 9/29/11
I don’t want to come off as disrespectful to people I appreciate in general, especially on a public forum. So you found my one fear.
being obnoxious and self righteous while ignoring the point since 9/29/11
You should alter your sig then:
being obnoxious and self righteous, yet not disrespectful to those worthy of appreciation…
Haha I wouldn’t go that far. Our old community member got plenty of disrespect (disrespect begets disrespect after all) from me outside of his service, but I respected his service. Man some of those back and forths would ridiculous.
being obnoxious and self righteous while ignoring the point since 9/29/11
STAY THE COURSE!!! SUPPORT VETEREANS!!! PRAYER IN SCHOOL!!! GO IGGLES!!!!
Sound familiar at all? I just need to resurrect my inner FR …
It sucks that the most jingoistic in our society are often those who serve the public good the least. And it also sucks that people can be shitheads whether they are vets or not. But both are truisms.

Any proof of this claim or are your eyes just telling you that because you remember stories about vets/police more than stories about other people?
by KornontheKobb on Jan 6, 2012 10:00 PM EST up reply actions
But it’s continually brought up as an aside despite having no bearing on the actual story. His service is mentioned as a way to garner more sympathy for him as the victim and page views for the people writing about it. Sympathy that he deserves regardless of his life experience but ultimately doesn’t make a difference because the story is about these classless scumbag jabronies who will assault innocent bystanders for no good reason.

See my response above. I agree, I just ranted because I do agree.
being obnoxious and self righteous while ignoring the point since 9/29/11
I think it’s worth mentioning that he’s a vet and a cop and all that, just in terms of background, but it’s certainly not the focus of the story, as it’s been made by a lot of people. It’s only the focus of the story if he was targeted because he’s a cop and a vet, or if this happened in the line of duty, which it obviously did not.

I don’t see it that way at all. This is the first clear photo of the person that allegedly beat up the Rangers fan. By putting it on the BSH site, there is a possibility that someone may recognize him. I don’t see this as having anything to do with generating traffic to the site.

Crossing Broad is bad when they write about players going to the bar and hitting on chicks, or when they write about Lindy Ruff’s daughter or whatever. On this story, CB has done a very, very good job. Better than we have, I’d say.

The site can (and should, and will) do both.
This is a story of interest to the community, and Travis is sharing it. I doubt the time it took him to write the 19 words above will prevent him from writing something about what the defense looks like with Timonen hurt and Walker waived, and I’m pretty sure he has room on the site for both.

there has only been maybe 2 posts on this, and that fanpost to help them which you dont have to click on. In between that has been alot of stories about the flyers, so i dont know where you get this is getting more attention then other flyers news.
Including Flyby articles, I’ve got 7 stories about this on the Front page. Which is about the same as when Richie and Carter were traded haha.
"I'm terrible" - Ilya Bryzgalov
It’s not even close, of course.
In this case, there were two articles, one fanshot, and apparently four articles linked in the Fly By.
When Carter and Richards were traded, excluding articles about the obviously-related Bryzgalov trade and signing, there were 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 original articles about it, plus a BSH radio spot (your one chance to hear the melodious sound of my voice!), and 49 Fly-By links in the week after the trades.
The argument that this event is not news would seem to be undermined by the fact that it is appearing in many major publications (Inquirer, Daily News, ESPN, etc) and even by your claims that it is driving traffic to the site (why are they coming here if this isn’t news?) It’s not Richards/Carter news, and isn’t being covered like that, but it’s still worth covering.

What are you trying to achieve here? There’s no crowding out effect. It’s not like Travis and co. can only do three posts a day and this takes up one of them. This is a Flyers related crime, hence the reason why a Flyers blog would spend time on it. This is not the first time the BSH guys have spoken out against the stereotyping of Philly fans.

Interesting thoughts from the guy who filmed it, per CB, here.
I was walking toward the line for Geno’s, and these guys in Flyers jerseys bribed a black dude, who might be a window cleaner for cars and such, to spray his cleaner at [the Rangers fans who were in line at Geno’s]. I got some sprayed on me, but I walked away from the black dude. Then he went back across the street to [the Flyers fans], and they were just cracking up so hard. So the Rangers fans started yapping at them, so all verbal out there. [Lou says he can read lips, and that his cousin confirmed it was mostly "Rangers suck," from one side, and "Rangers are number one," from the other…]
Then the Flyers fans went after them, which I started filming, as you could see in the video. Then after that the video ended. And after two minutes, that dude who got knocked out got up and needed some medical help, so he got a lot of ice from Geno’s to put on his face. One of the guys in the Flyers jerseys [the one seen in the video trying to break up the fight] offered [the Rangers fans] a couple of steaks. They walked away.
That was it. In that line there was like 3-1 Rangers fans, they all stood there and watched, didn’t even move to help or to call cops. Only one Flyers fan tried to break it up.
The Rangers fans [initially] said something that offended [the Flyers fans], which made [the Flyers fans] come to them, but that little dude [the guy who eventually got knocked out] tried to tell them to stop, don’t start, but the Flyers guy just ignored him and took his jacket off and punched his face. So the Flyers guy went too far.
Who knows how much truth there is to all that, but I thought the guy who got knocked out was critical in the hospital?

Where the wife of the one who was beaten is appalled that bystanders watched and did nothing (or took video as it were, cough).
I’d say this is pretty indicative of our society. I don’t know that I would rush into a fray if I saw something like this going on, but I sure as hell wouldn’t be videotaping it. I might call the police, though.
Remember the Rodney King beatings? Was it Chris Rock who opined, “Put the fucking camera down and HELP ME!”
"I wouldn’t run if there was a fire. I wouldn’t run anywhere. I hate running." - O. Munn
That is to say, this isn’t a Philadelphia thing—not rushing into help. So this is one thing you definitely can’t pin on Philadelphians.
"I wouldn’t run if there was a fire. I wouldn’t run anywhere. I hate running." - O. Munn
I can’t remember the name of this, but I learned about it in psych class or somewhere. The more people who are standing around in a situation like this, the less likely it is that you will be helped, because everyone is hoping that someone more qualified than they are will step in. It’s definitely not just a Philly thing. It’s a human psychology thing. People are subconsciously afraid of messing something up and making the situation worse for the victim (like if someone needs CPR or is choking or whatever) and in this case, they’re afraid of probably getting hurt themselves. Everyone in the crowd was probably hoping that a cop or big guy or a karate blackbelt would show up and stop it. This phenomenon has a name, but I have no idea what it is. Yay, college!
I heart our rookies.
