Flyers sophomore forward Matt Read will be playing in Sweden during the NHL lockout. Read has signed a lockout deal with Södertälje, a club in Sweden's second-tier league, Allsvenskan.
The club announced the deal on Sunday afternoon. Read will join Carl Hagelin of the New York Rangers on the Södertälje roster. Hagelin grew up in the city of 64,000 located just to the southwest of Stockholm. He played his junior hockey with the club before leaving to attend the University of Michigan.
Read is the sixth NHL player to join an Allsvenskan team since the lockout began on September 15. In addition to Hagelin, Kings forward Anze Kopitar, Blues forward Patrik Berglund, Ducks goalie Viktor Fasth and Sharks forward Douglas Murray have signed in the league.
Swedish media has reported that Södertälje is also interested in Flyers defenseman Nicklas Grossmann, but as of Monday, Grossmann was still joining informal workouts with other locked out Flyers at the Skate Zone in Voorhees.
