The Flyers could have representation at the 2013 World Junior Hockey Championship.
The defensemen, selected by the Flyers with the 85th overall pick in the 2012 NHL Draft, was named to USA Hockey's preliminary National Junior Team roster and will join 25 other under-20 players for training camp from December 16-18 in Westchester County, New York. Camp will move to Finland from December 19 to 23 and will be trimmed from 27 to 23 on the 23rd.
Gostisbehere has been impressive thus far in his sophomore season with the Union College Dutchmen, currently ranked second in the nation in scoring by defensemen and third overall on his team in scoring. He plays alongside senior Greg Coburn, the brother of Flyers defenseman Braydon. The Dutchmen currently sit in fourth-place in ECAC Hockey with an 8-3-1 overall record. They're ranked 12th in the nation heading into a weekend set at Brown and at Yale.
"We're excited for Shayne to have this opportunity to earn a spot on Team USA for the World Junior Championships," Union head coach Rick Bennett aid. "Shayne has come into his own as one of the top offensive defensemen in our league and has made a name for himself as a big time player in college hockey. We hope this opportunity furthers his development as a hockey player."
The 2013 WJC gets underway in Ufa, Russia on December 26. No Flyers prospects were named to Canada's preliminary roster on Monday.
