According to Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Ed Snider had this to say about Giroux: ""I tell everybody that he reminds me of Bobby Clarke at a similar age… He looks like he did, acts like he did, played like he did. It’s kind of exciting."

Am I the only person getting tired of the Bobby Clarke comparison?

Simon Gagne AND Mike Richards may move between towns, wear new jerseys and call different arenas home but, at the end of the day, they will both always be Philadelphia Flyers.

One day Sean Couturier will win the Conn Smythe. You heard it here first.

Not only that, but it makes me question if Ed Snider has seen Giroux and/or Clarke play.

Granted, I never saw Clarke play, but my understanding is that the two of them are nothing alike.

Clarke was a tenacious highly competitive hard workers on the ice, played on the top unit for both PK and PP, both are centers and playmakers before shooters. The comparison is very valid. Especially in the looks department and they are almost the identical size around 5ft 10in 180lbs.

But Clarke had an edge that Giroux doesn’t. Which is why the comparison to Richards made sense to me.

By watching the games!

But really, by fights, post-whistle scrums, little slashes, big hits, etc.

I mean, Clarke took a two-handed slash to break a guy’s ankle. Richards delivered a blind-side, cross-ice hit that knocked Booth out cold. Giroux does neither of those things.

He was a nasty F’r.

I think the difference comes from how the game has changed. No stars can play the way Clarke played with the way the game is officiated/disciplined.

Well, certainly. Clarke was a pretty dirty guy. But Richards plays on that same edge, same with a guy like Lucic.

G has a fire in him though. Last night he reverse crosschecked a guy, putting his stick beyond the guys head and pulling his arms back in towards him. It was interesting. I think he tried to crosscheck him when the player ducked he just pulled it back and decided to hit him in the back of the head.

That said, I agree that Clarke was a ball of hate and a much bigger physical presence. Also, I don’t think that Clarke had the moves that G does. I’ve only seen a handful of games on dvd and such but Clarke didn’t have the best dangles.

Yeah. I mean, Briere does some nasty things too, but I wouldn’t compare him to Clarke based on his stick work.

Same with Giroux. More skill, less snarl.

The only way I see it is that G is Awesome and Clarke is Awesome. If G stays here his entire career it might be those two names at the top of the list as far as the Orange and Black are concerned.

Right. I have no problem making that comparison. Nor in the “face of the Flyers” or “beloved by fans” comparison.

It’s the “played like he did” part that I take issue with.

I agree but Clarke reputation is deserved certainly doesn’t define him as a player he was much much more skilled that he is given credited for retrospectively. He won 2x Hart Trophies.

Richards comparison to Clarke was for the other reasons you mentioned the doing whatever it takes to win crossing the line to do so if need be. Which is also a fair comparison.

Who is underappreciating Clarke’s skill? The skill comparison is there for Clarke, Richards, and Giroux. That’s similar. But we aren’t talking about talent – they’re all talented – we’re talking about the way they play.

And Giroux does not play like Clarke.*

*Again, no personal observation of Clarke, only anecdotes.

The popular anecdotes don’t do Clarke justice Clarke is a two way amazing play maker puck possession player similar to Giroux if you look at just that one component of Clarke on the ice with the puck they are very similar. Without the puck is different.

And I wouldn’t use those samplings to say I know for sure what kind of player he is; at least tot he degree Lanci is wording his statements. I mean I think I have an idea, and enough to make relatively informed statements, but ones that would include the qualifier on my actually point of reference.

I completely do not get the Clarke vs. Giroux comparison. Unless you believe that Richards and Giroux have the same game. Richards was/is a much closer comparison, except that Richards does not have the skill set Clarke had (no knock on Richards, there is a reason Clarke was a first ballot HOFer). If you must know, Giroux reminds me of some of the Montreal players of the 1970s.

*Having watched hundreds of Clarke’s games. Ok, I said it. But wait, didn’t Carchidi watch Clarke, too??!?!?

I got a chance to watch Clarke play in person a fair amount in his last four seasons and on TV before that.

Giroux is a better stickhandler. Clarke was the best passer of his era. I’ve read more than one person say he was the best passer ever before Gretzky. Giroux is a more elegant skater.

Giroux’s edge has playfulness to it; Clarke had no sense of humor. Clarke whined to the refs all the time. Giroux has shown a more feisty side to his competitiveness this year, but Clarke was really dirty. Here’s a way to compare eras constructively: If you asked which guy was going to break Kharlamov’s ankle in ‘72 it would be Clarke. On today’s Team Canada it would not be Giroux.

I barely remember the first Cup, but from everything I’ve read by 24 Clarke was so clearly the leader of the team, as well as the league’s best forward. Ashbee had a lot of respect in the locker room, I think Van Impe as well, but Clarke was the guy.

So, some parallels but I think Snider is overstating it.

i just find it amazing the refs get out of the building in one piece let alone saty on the ice the rest of the game after a call like that. if this were soccer rocks bottles pieces of the stadium would be pelted at the ref for a call of equal shitty ness. when is there gonna be some kind of review for calls that are so completely rediculous yet the ref is too proud to make a mistake. bring back glass bottles at games, that should help alittle.

I don’t think it’s about being “too proud.” Sports officials are paid a lot of money and the expectation is that they will be something they’re not – perfect. That said, if you have officials come out and admit a mistake every time they do, you lose the integrity of the game. You would then claim sports officials make way too many mistakes when in reality they’re just admitting them now. It’s a catch-22.

Well, they get out of there in one piece because they were in Pittsburgh. It definitely seems like Fleury always gets those GI calls every time he hits the ice. It’s probably comparable to NFL QBs complaining about some getting more generous roughing the passer calls than others.
However, this kind of thing seems like its been happening league wide, for/against every team this season. Definitely something that the refs need to focus on in the offseason

Regarding the call, the referee can’t be looking everywhere at once. He saw two players coming together near the crease. I assume that he thought Lupul pushed/bumped the Pen into Fleury – not that Lupul made direct contact with Fleury himself. That said, I’ve seen worse diving in the Olympics..

One name to keep an eye on is veteran blueliner Hal Gill in Montreal. He’s slated to be an unrestricted free agent July 1, and, from what I was told Tuesday, the Flyers covet his experience — he’s won a Cup — as well as his shot-blocking and penalty-killing abilities. The Habs aren’t ready to pull the plug on their season just yet, but if and when they do, expect the Flyers to inquire about him.

And you’re really going to compare his off ice demeanor in Columbus – a place he didn’t want to be – to prove that he had the same attitude in Philly, where he voluntarily signed an 11-year contract with a NTC to play with his best friend?

How are you making the connection that his attitude today is the same as it was one year ago?

Because it is?

There’s been less whining from Wade-Freaking-Redden. Or do you want to overlook that, and pretend all hockey players are whiny primadonnas?

One of the problems many folks had with Richards and Carter, myself included, was that when things were looking down for the team in a game, when the chips were down, those two would seem to throw a passive aggressive fit. This of course, was handwaved away by folks who’d rather punch Corsi into a calculator then believe things like “attitude” and “drive” exist. They’d always put the proof of burden on detractors, as if the observed problems were completely made up.

Well, there’s proof Carter’s got a shit attitude now, and guess what? It’s when the chips are down.

If attitude and drive exist like you claim, then we should be able to see em on stats aswell. Guess what, Carter was a really really good goal score and forward in both ends.

Regardless, I think there’s a huge shift in mentality when playing for a Cup contender like Philly, thinking you’ve signed a lifetime deal, and then you get traded to the laughingstock of the NHL, in a mid-major city (certainly one with almost apathetic interest in their team, save for the few BJ’s loyalists that certainly do exist).

Sure, the maturity may not be all there, but he did get a raw deal by Philly. Regardless of mood swings, his heart was still in Philly, and I doubt he was traded away for attitude reasons. When it comes down to it, no one is going to trade away a potential 40 goal scorer because his focus arguably wavers from time to time.

Honest question:

Why does his salary prevent you from ever saying “he got a raw deal”? He signed an 11 year contract with a NTC to play in Philly, was repeatedly told he wasn’t being traded, and then got traded to Columbus.

Why does his salary preclude you from saying “that sucks for Carter”?

Because that’s what you sign up for when you play professional sports. Every player knows that they can be traded. It’s part of the deal. And Carter still had time before his NTC kicked in. Yes it is Columbus but a lot of peoples intial reactions after the Carter trade was wow, Columbus could actually be good this year with a secondary center to go along with Nash. Things haven’t turned out that way but it appeared that Columbus was finally ready to start trying to win with the trade. So no, I don’t feel bad for a guy making millions of dollars just because he can’t play with his buddy in Philly anymore.

Ok, lets say he did get a raw deal. Is that an excuse for him to still be sulking about it? He’s a professional athlete, this is his job, he should start acting like it. His agents line of “he’s tried to give his best effort while in Columbus” is total BS.

If it’s causing problems – as it clearly is in Columbus – I have a problem.

But there are different degrees here. Do I care that Zherdev used a car service instead of bumming a ride from a teammate? No. Do I care if Andrej Meszaros sits in a corner and doesn’t talk to anyone in the locker room? No.

Do I care if Jeff Carter is moping? No. But if his teammates/management are saying he’s a disruption, I think he should knock that off. You can be unhappy and not cause problems.

There’s been less whining from Wade-Freaking-Redden. Or do you want to overlook that, and pretend all hockey players are whiny primadonnas?

And how does any of that mean that he was a problem in Philadelphia?

when things were looking down for the team in a game, when the chips were down, those two would seem to throw a passive aggressive fit.

That’s what you perceived. That’s not what I perceived. So this just looks like confirmation bias to me.

This of course, was handwaved away by folks who’d rather punch Corsi into a calculator then believe things like "attitude" and "drive" exist.

Nice attempt to divert the conversation. Attitude and drive exist. But when you’re trying to say that a guy who worked his way up from pee wees to the NHL, a guy who made the Canadian national team and a guy who Captained the Canadian national team, how are you going to sit here and say you know better what his attitude and drive are than the guys who picked him to Captain Team Canada?

You Corsi detractors love to say “watch the game”, “trust the players”, but yet you dismiss the fact that these guys were picked as leaders of the teams they were on because they were role models for the rest of the team. Because you saw, from your couch, what kind of attitude they had in the locker room.

Well, there’s proof Carter’s got a shit attitude now, and guess what? It’s when the chips are down.

The chips are down? He’s playing in Columbus. There are no chips, since they folded their hand. When the chips were down, Carter played on a broken foot in the Eastern Conference Finals.

But I guess a regular season game on the worst team in the league is really when the chips are down. My fault. I thought playing for the Stanley Cup was more important.

No, I defended him then and I’m defending him now. I’ll admit there was once a time (2010 off-season) when I thought he was a square peg in a round hole and might do better elsewhere because he didn’t fit the needs we had in our roster. But I still thought he was a good player, wanted to keep him, and didn’t buy into the “locker room attitude” stuff.

Any difference in atmosphere I see is the bunch of new commenters that show up around the playoffs every year. Many of them were Carter haters, so they celebrated when he was traded and then were never heard from again on the site. But from what I see, the regulars around here have pretty much held the same opinion as 12 months ago.

Most likely a Stanley Cup that year…

But the deal we got for him this year is better than I expected. Cooter is going to be a star. Voracek will be a top six forward.

Cooter….19 Points.
Voracek….28 Points.

Carter… 17 Points.

I think we did ok replacing him.

“Dink” is a nickname I’ve been carrying around since college hockey. Coined by my best friend, who was the goalie on my team. Overtime game.. he makes a great kick save on a double deflection in front that kicks all the way out to me on the left circle.. I chip it past a pinching defenseman and I’m off to the races….

Single deke, heel/toe, fake the backhand and pull the puck forehand for the top shelf…. goalie is flopping like a flounder and sliding out to my right…

You guessed it. DINK! I don’t think I’ve hit the post as hard as that since. Next rush up the ice, they score on a partial break.

Best friend skates over…“Way to F’n go, Dink.” Still have it, almost a decade later.

So? You can say the same about Briere. And Hartnell. And van Riemsdyk. And Pronger. And everyone.

What those people ignore is the many occassions he was the only player giving it their all. This Bobby Abreu Syndrome is ridiculous. Philly hated Mike Schmidt. Philly hated Donovan McNabb. I put no weight whatsoever on what the masses think about great players’ attitudes.

This chart is a random simulation of a hypothetical 35-goal scorer, who averages 3 shots a game and shoots 14.5% night in and night out– Mr. Super Consistency– using a 10-game moving average to smooth out the curves. Look at how streaky he appears, yet his shooting percentage (14.5%) and shots per game (3) never deviated on any given night.

Imagine how “streaky” a 0.145 hitter will look in baseball. Some nights he’ll get 1 hit, some nights 2, but most often 0. It’s the same thing in hockey. Except 0.145 in hockey is good and not terrible.

It’s amazing how streakiness is a bad thing when you don’t like the player to begin with, but how often it is ignored when you are predisposed to like the player.

But you’re welcome for explaining how a 14.5% shooter who takes 3 shots a game will appear streaky even though he isn’t.

Could I say the same about them? I guess. But I wouldnt.

Briere and JVR, Definitely. I like JVR alot more then Danny-boy, but both of them seem to dissappear for large chunks of time. Harty and Pronger I never felt that way about, unless you want to count Pronger’s repeated injuries as disappearing. Hartsy, for whatever reason, I gave a pass to. And then he’d break out a pair of hat tricks one month and blow you away.

Carter was supposed to be our scoring star, and outside of one very good season where he finished 2nd in goals IIRC, never really seemed to achieve that superstar status.

Maybe it’s nothing but perception, but perception is a big factor. Ovechkin dangling his ass to get into the o-zone and then getting poke checked out is the same net result as Carter shooting high and wide, I suppose, but Ovie is fun to watch, even when it doesn’t pan out. Carter shoots high and wide, and I sigh and take another drink.

Right, so you simply don’t like Carter. You can come up with all the reasons why you don’t, and that’s fine.

But you don’t like Carter for the same reasons people didn’t like Mike Schmidt, Bobby Abreu, Donovan McNabb, and many others. I will continue to hate how this town views it’s star players.

FWIW I hate Carter from a perception POV as well; I think it’s the hair and the way he uses his frame (it’s effective but subtle; I always wished it was less subtle). Yet, when it comes down to it, I manage to not let those things get in the way of recognizing what he brought on the ice. From casual fan POV I could care less about losing Carter as it didn’t impact me emotionally, however from a what he can do on the ice POV, I was saddened (especially because I didn’t expect Couturier to be there at 8).

Maybe he is lazy and not quite the player he could be, but he put the puck on the net a ton, and he also moved the player forward against strong competition (and also produced at a ~30 goal rate), and I don’t take that for granted.

I’m sure I’d hate Carter the person – any guy in his mid-20s who bleaches his hair is probably someone I would hate – but I separate the player from the person. And I especially don’t evalute a guy based on my personal opinion of his personality.

Yeah I just find it interesting that people won’t separate perception from what certain things are telling them; you’re just a stat nerd. Also, it’s more than his hair, his game just makes him look lazy, and it’s frustrating…but I was willing to look at other things that didn’t have bias like I do, and see what they had to say.

being obnoxious and self righteous while ignoring the point since 9/29/11

by DLJr on Feb 1, 2012 12:29 PM EST up reply actions

Eh… Thats one way to put it. Another is “If there isn’t a stat for it, nerds won’t believe it.”

Example. A botched pass sails past Carter’s stick by a few feet. You know he can stretch out and nab it, he’s only 10 seconds into his shift, but he doesn’t. Since there’s no stat for it, Either A) It didn’t happen, or B) “You can’t possibly know why he didn’t make an effort.”

All attempts will be made to negate the fact that an honest observation by the average Joe is dead on.

"Because wives and girlfriends aren’t on the road."

by BannedStreetBully on Feb 1, 2012 12:35 PM EST up reply actions

The problems with that are:

a) You didn’t see that play happen with an open mind about Carter, so you are more likely to remember when this happens to Carter than to, say, Giroux;
b) You aren’t tracking this, so you have no way of accurately stating how often this happened. The rest of us have to believe you when you say it happened “all the time”;
c) There’s no way of knowing whether he could stretch out and nab it, only that you think he could have;
d) There’s no comparison to how often he does stretch out and nab it, only the times he doesn’t;
e) Humans’ memories are horrible.

Take out the confirmation bias (“Carter is lazy, oh hey look! Another lazy play”), the lack of recording (“Happens all the time!”), the abject certainly on something you cannot know for sure (“You KNOW he can”), the ignoring of the opposite, and your memory, and I’ll start believing personal observations.

I’m not sure that’s a fair argument. I hate Pittsburgh, but I feel like I can tell the difference between Crosby scoring a good goal, and him being fed a practically open net.

I’m also not sure belief should be something so infrequently given out. If you say Datsyuk had a good game last night, I don’t need to ask for a citation. I just believe it. If I disagree, we could discuss specific plays for and against. None of this requires tracking.

The same goes for Carter not stretching out. The fact that it can’t be quantified shouldn’t preclude the fact that it exists. I’m honestly not sure why you insist on that.

"Because wives and girlfriends aren’t on the road."

by BannedStreetBully on Feb 1, 2012 1:06 PM EST up reply actions

I feel like I can tell the difference between Crosby scoring a good goal, and him being fed a practically open net.

And that isn’t about whether he made an extra effort, that’s something that is obvious and has every instance available for video review. Whether he stretched out or not is a matter of opinion, on a play that is not captured every time.

I’m also not sure belief should be something so infrequently given out

Again, this isn’t about believing. This is about disagreeing and being able to defend. In your example, if I say Datsyuk had a good game last night, and you say he didn’t, can you point to the specific instances for why?

Can you then remember why you think that a week from now? A year from now? Something like a blown assignment is easy to remember. Something like a stick-check to prevent entry into the zone is not. Further, something as subtle as receiving a pass or not, why should I believe you on something that subtle, from someone who is looking for his failures?

The fact that it can’t be quantified shouldn’t preclude the fact that it exists. I’m honestly not sure why you insist on that.

I’m not saying it doesn’t exist. I’m saying a) there’s no way of knowing whether what you see is true or not, or exaggerated or not; b) it can be quantified, but you aren’t quantifying it; c) you aren’t quantifying the times he stretches out and makes a pass.

In essence, you have something quantifiable (passes connected), but you aren’t quantifying it, you aren’t counting the positives, and you have no way of validating (i.e. video or objective representation) it.

To clarify on the believing part:

I’m specifically referring to disagreements. I say Carter was a good player, you say he wasn’t. I’m not going to change my opinion based on my belief that you are right.

However, if I say Boucher is a good goalie and you say he had a bad game last night, my initial reaction is to believe you. I’ll still go watch the highlights on NHL.com and form my own opinion, with the bias that he was bad.

On something like “Carter was lazy and wouldn’t stretch out to collect a pass”, I’m not inclined to believe you and I have no way of verifying that account on my own.

Two more options

C) if it happened enough to be meaningful in his overall game it would have been reflect in that Corsi Calculator you referenced.
D) I watch the games too, my observations of what passes could be legitimately accepted is probably different than yours

I also don’t how like you frame this as a us against them type of thing. Approaching it from that angle makes you seem childish, so don’t be a baby about it. I know you, I like you, you’re a nice guy so please try to avoid going down that path.
This isn’t about stats versus eyes; it’s about me looking at all available data I have and making my own conclusions, and being amazed other people have no interest in doing that some times. I think Carter might be able to be even better than he is, but he is also pretty damn good hockey player; and frankly I’d take a team of lazy Carters over a team of hustle Lapp’s every day; even though I personally enjoy a Lappy type player more than a Carter type player.

being obnoxious and self righteous while ignoring the point since 9/29/11

by DLJr on Feb 1, 2012 12:45 PM EST up reply actions

C : Would it? I freely admit that my memory gets fuzzy when what Corsi tracks, but if he never touched the puck, but was merely on ice during a likely turnover, that’d have an effect? With less weight then him actively turning the puck over himself?

D: Probably. You’re also a much better player then I am, so you’ve got firsthand evidence, against my street hockey experience.

I think the Us vs Them thing spawns from folks taking the fun out of hockey talk, at least, to me. It feels like if you can’t prove something with either a corsi, or a youtube video, then it didn’t happen.

In my personal life, I’ve got four folks who watch hockey, and only one of them watches the Flyers. It’s why I come here to talk shop. It’s fun, until someone tells me my opinion is invalid because it can’t be quantified.

"Because wives and girlfriends aren’t on the road."

by BannedStreetBully on Feb 1, 2012 12:59 PM EST up reply actions

C) Yes, he won’t get a chance to register any shot (Corsi is +/- for shots on net, shots that miss the net, and shots that get blocked) whil also giving the other team an additional chance to take the puck the other way and get a shot attempt against. I doubt it would effect it much unless it was literally part of his game.

D) That’s the thing that drives me nuts. People tell me to use my eyes; trust me, I’m far more argumentative and douchey when I use my eyes to watch a game than I am with numbers.

I just hate stat nerds versus guys watching the game because of the implication. I also don’t like pitting them against each other online because giving each other shit is a lot harder through a computer than face to face…it often just devolves in to a complete time suck and animosity here.

I think your opinion of him is fine, you’re allowed to not like him or his game. I think it’s the proof thing that takes us down in to the, wait a second, what’s this guys saying path. I’m fine with people that hate Carter, I play with a lot of guys that hate him. I also agree with a lot of their perceptions; I just go farther than them looking at it and they say they have no interest in that because they just don’t like him…I’m okay with that. Some people have strong opinions of a player, those opinions have no requirement to be based on stats. This particular scenario started a bit differently, so it went a bit differently.

As a fan of non-stat narratives, I get that. But asking for some evidence does solve the problem of having two or more commenters quickly build up into a screaming match about who is better and who sucks. The call for proof is one of the reasons this place doesn’t read like most of the other sports comment blogs out there.

This happens to every player at some point, you just choose to remember it for Carter because you already don’t like him. Confirmation bias. Guess i’m not old enough but why did everyone hate Schmidt? Donovan is relatively understandable imo, and I dont wanna get into a Donovan argument with you.

And here is what I will say about Carter. I was always critical of him offensively because he took an insane number of shots and his shooting percentage always seemed pretty bad and frankly if he didnt take so many shots, he wouldnt be a perennial 30 goal scorer. I remember frequently getting frustrated how he would skate down the side an just rip a shot right into the goalies chest when he could have dumped it in or should have even chosen a better shot location and been able to get a rebound.

With that said, no, I never once hated Carter. He was a hell of a player because of his skating ability and defensive responsibility. Of course I was critical, because I think he could have been better if say he appeared to work on his shot selection in practice. And maybe someday he will be among the NHL elite. At the end of the day, he was a 30 goal scorer who played both ends of the ice. Cant really hate the guy.

Schmidt was perceived of being too laid back, not putting forth sufficient effort and coming up small in the clutch (and striking out way too much). He was sort of ahead of his time but one fricken hell of a player. I always loved him and didn’t understand the boos.

I remember Schmidt playing but was probably too young to know much about the perception of him, but since have gathered that it was similar to the McNabb Syndrome, too, wasn’t it?

He would just sorta say the “wrong” thing that would set off the fans. Not necessarily untrue things, just things that people didn’t want to hear.

Dont wanna open up a can of worms but I dont see how anyone can compare Mcnabb a very good qb in his time to arguably the best 3rd basemen of all time. I never felt Mcnabb deserved all the hate, but come on now. He certainly deserved more than Schmidt.

by pf289 on Feb 1, 2012 12:57 PM EST up reply actions

And that’s also fair. Schmidt is the best 3rd baseman of his time while McNabb was only very good in his.

But I also think McNabb got more hate than Schmidt did, making the hate-to-talent ratio fairly equal.

I’m sorry if I implied McNabb was as good as Schmidt, I only meant to imply that both were irrationally hated.

Whoa whoa whoa Jaworski definitely deserved a lot of the hate. He really was not that great of a passer. Donovan is by no means Montana, but he could throw the ball significantly better than Jaws and turned it over far less. Any Schmidt hate makes no sense, but then again, I wasnt around during the prime of his career.

At the same time that Schmidt was booed because he didn’t care even though his results made him the best third basemen ever. (It’s like Parisians yelling “Rodin you have cement hands, you suck.”)

I don’t know why they started hating him, but they probably really hated him because he called them on their shit:

“You’re trying your damndest, you strike out and they boo you. I act like it doesn’t bother me, like I don’t hear anything the fans say, but the truth is I hear every word of it and it kills me.”
“If you’re associated with the Philadelphia media or town, you look for negatives. I don’t know if there’s something about their upbringing or they have too many hoagies, or too much cream cheese.”

As far as Carter shooting: There’s only 1 guy in the top 7 in goals who doesn’t take 3 shots per game: Scott Hartnell. Last year, there wasn’t a single guy in the top 10 in goals who didn’t take 3 shots per game (Morrow tied for 12th with 2.54). Yes, Carter was one of only six players to take 4 shots per game or more, but what’s wrong with shooting when you score 36 times? If he rips a shot into the goalie’s chest, there’s an offensive zone faceoff. That helps the team, as much or more, than a dump in.

But yeah, in general, we agree. I think he was an elite player, but I understand those who say he was “just” a 30 goal scorer, two way player.

Sometimes if you just don’t “like” a guy you have to own up to that and realize it’s your problem.

Carter to Nashville?

Oodles of short term and long-term cap space.

Nothing would signal to Weber and Suter that Poile’s going to spend to win than to bring in a contract that doesn’t expire for another 10-years.

They haven’t had a #1 center in Nashville… well… ever. (Foppa on one foot doesn’t count)

Their attacking, north-south speed game is tailor made for Carter — lot of great outlet passing to get him the puck in stride.

They have enough assets in the system to pull it off.

Carter could find his very own Carrie Underwood.

by Tomahawkey on Feb 1, 2012 11:26 AM EST reply actions

I specifically posted this at On the Forecheck a few days ago. The problem is the length of the Carter contract for management, not the $$$. But they have stuff that Columbus would want, young D and goaltending (like Lindback) that is even in a more untenable position than Bob with the Rinne contract. And Suter would re-sign if Nashville matches on $$, even if he becomes a free agent.

If Carter is traded for, also, look out Western Conference. They suddenly become a Cup contender. No joke.

(a) Ilya Bryzgalov's contract (b) Ryan Howard's extension (c) Mike Vick's extension (d) Greek bonds from 2009 (e) Papelbon's bloat deal

Word to that. And he’d become the fourth Predator on my fantasy team.

I heart our rookies.

It would take some stones to make a move like that, but it does seem to work on a number of levels for both the Preds and for Carter.

by Tomahawkey on Feb 1, 2012 11:49 AM EST up reply actions

That would be a great trade if it happened. It’d be nice to see Carter flourish there and see Nashville succeed.

Carter's on the Block!!

How hysterical would it be if we traded for him? That would be slightly awkward in the front office, at best.

Probably, but I wonder if he can get a referral from Tom Brady, too.

Well, I was regarding the Tom Brady referral (in case you weren’t aware, the doc Crosby went to was referred to him by Brady), but I wasn’t regarding Pronger seeing other doctors.

Briere and JVR didn’t practice today, Rinaldo was cleared to play, and Holmstrom went back to the Phantoms. Kimmo took a maintenance day.
