Should the Flyers consider buying out Bryzgalov contract?
If his buyout would occur in June of 2012, setting the buyout ratio at 2/3 and the total buyout cost @ $27,333,333 spread over 16 years. The flyers would carry $1,708,333 on the books and against the cap till 2027-2028 season.
I'd may give him another year, if he proves himself to being one of the top 3 or 4 goalies. If you don't buy hime out this year you could do it next year. The next year numbers for the buyout would change and they would look like this, the total would then be 23,000,000 spread over 14 years the carry over would be $1,642,857 a year till the 2026-2027 season.
I think Bob's should be the #1 goalie.

I’d wait till the new CBA before doing anything.
Simon Gagne AND Mike Richards may move between towns, wear new jerseys and call different arenas home but, at the end of the day, they will both always be Philadelphia Flyers.
One day Sean Couturier will win the Conn Smythe. You heard it here first.

+1. We at least need to know how the talks are going and have the two sides establish the big issues before we seriously think about such things. There are so many variables in play. For one thing, we’d certainly regret it if we were to buy him out in June and carry the penalty for 14 years if it turns out that we could have done it cap free in September. Even then, it’s a tough pill to swallow unless there’s no chance he’s going to hack it here at all.
Warning: Arguing the NHL CBA with me could be hazardous to your mental health. Proceed at your own risk.

Really? It hasn’t even been a full season. Why dont you wait till the playoffs to get the torches and pitch forks out?

The contract was never a good idea though. I expect him to somehow pick his game up eventually but all escape clauses should be considered (including KHL etc.)

I have nothing to back this up but my gut tells me they only gave bryz that contract to get him playing here and see how it went. If it works out and he plays to it, perfect if not I believe they had some exit strategy.
Well, I hope they do, but I agree, it’s too early to toss him out.

Might ought to consider using that buyout on Chris Pronger. Bryz could still pull it all together. Based on his age and physical style of play, there’s a fair to middling chance that Prongs is finished. :-(

Prongs can be Rathje'd for the rest of his contract...
Bryzgalov on the other hand is likely to be healthy enough to be a cap burden for a LONG time.

Goaltending is an erratic position. Look at Ryan Miller’s numbers this year, should he be dumped aside. This might not be Brzy’s year but that doesn’t mean he is going to be worthless forever. Giguere had a rough couple of seasons as well and bounced back now to a 0.923 SV PCT and 2.12 GAA. Tim Thomas was a un-tradeable waste of space 2 years ago and is a now a top 2 goalie in the league with a Cup, Conn Symth and a Veznina. Carey Price has been up and down as well. This is the problem with signing a goalie long term to big money but I think there is a benefit in sticking with these proven performers long term. You can also add Marc Andre Fluery to that list who struggled here and there. Patience and a capable backup are important.
Also BOB isn’t exactly setting the world on fire either.
