Same s***, different day: PK, poor defense fail Flyers in loss to Red Wings

Here's the deal: Remember that recap of Saturday's game against the New York Rangers? Go read it. The exact same shit still applies.
The Flyers lost a game due to a bad penalty kill and just all-around poor team defense, despite the fact that they probably outplayed -- or, at the very least, were on the same level as -- the Detroit Red Wings for the majority of the hockey game. There's not much more you can write about it or say about it. It is what it is at this point.
Four days to let this one fester, no game until Thursday night. Don't listen to WIP for a few days if you value your mental health.
Questions with Answers
- Joey MacDonald has been good for the Wings in his limited action, but he's not the greatest goalie in the world. It could be perceived as a weakness for Detroit. Can the Flyers exploit? Two MacDonald mistakes led directly to two Flyers goals. So, yep.
- Special teams were the Achilles heel on Saturday. Better in both departments tonight? Nope.
- How many times is "history" mentioned during the NBCSN broadcast? Relying on somebody to keep track here. 11. Thanks, everybody who kept count. You've done us all a great service.
- Kimmo Timonen talked about the lack of effort against the Rangers. Do they appear a bit more in gear for this one? Tough to tell, really. There's definitely plenty of emotion out there, for sure. It's not a happy hockey team right now.
- Wayne Simmonds has been playing really well lately. The Flyers can especially use him on the power play tonight, but in general, can he keep up his nice stretch, maybe grab himself a goal? Zero points, two penalties.

Nothing like opening an an article about history like this
Since then, the Detroit Red Wings have won 20 straight games at Joe Louis Arena, tying an NHL record established by the 1929-30 Boston Bruins and matched by the 1975-76 Philadelphia Flyers; both of whom went on to win the Stanley Cup Final.

Wait. The 1929-30 Bruins didn’t win the Cup either. 0 for 2, then. Not a bad start.

Maybe “win the Stanley Cup Final” doesn’t mean what I thought.

From what I’m gathering here, the Flyers “won the Stanley Cup Final” back in 2010. And have done so six times since that crushing loss in 1975.

I like this world you live in. I want to live there too.
Simon Gagne AND Mike Richards may move between towns, wear new jerseys and call different arenas home but, at the end of the day, they will both always be Philadelphia Flyers.
One day Sean Couturier will win the Conn Smythe. You heard it here first.

IMO the Bob for starter debate is over. Bob should not be the starter his numbers are bad and he is still doing the things that got him exposed last year ie going done early and often. He like Bryz cannot come up with a save when needed. At this point I say Bryz is now the clear number one if only for the fact that he has a body of work that supports him. Maybe not this year but in the past he has been effective and unless we are going to get someone else I say ride him hard the rest of the year. I just hope the “Bob should be the starter” talk can be put to rest for a while.
.
Are you not paying attention to the defense falling apart in front of him? Or Bryz? Doesn’t matter who’s in net, our defense blows right now.

I am paying attention to the defense, but sometimes your goalie has to steal a game. Look at Bobs numbers they are bad. I put blame on the D believe me but Bob has been pedestrian at best.
.
If they would have scored at least 1 power play goal last night Bob would have officially stolen that game.

He didnt though. Also its not just about last night look at his season line. His last bunch of starts he has been weak and his numbers are poor. Not saying Bryz has been great but if we are going to bash him then Bob should be looked at too.
.
Bryz makes umpty-million more than Bob. That leads to higher expectations. Hopefully Ilya will play better when he comes back from the flu, but so far this year there has been very little to choose from between the two of them.
Bob.

I agree. At this point however I am ready to ride Bryz for a long stretch. I wanna see him in net with only 3 or maybe 4 games off for the remainder of the season. I don’t think he has gotten enough straight starts this year. I think that he is used to getting a lot of starts in a row and we haven’t done that enough this year. I wanna see this guy get 8 straight starts and see if he can get into a groove. I don’t care if he has a couple 4 goal games in there I wanna ride this guy for 8 or even 10 in a row and see what happens.
.
I objected to your earlier comments blaming Bob, but, while I’m a little hesitant, I’d be willing to give this a shot. Neither goalie is doing well right now, whether that’s due to the goalies or the defense is still up for debate. But it’s been suggested before that Bryz needs a lot of starts to hit a rhythm, so I guess we might as well try it. Something has to eventually work, right?

Thats what I think. I have been thinking back and I can’t remember when if ever they have stuck with Bryz for a long stretch. The only time I think was when he clicked off seven of eight starts I think. I also think that happened to be when he played his best all season. So yes thats what I wanna see ride him for 8 or 10 straight see what happens. I don’t want to have to hear that excuse “I didn’t have enough starts to be able to get into a rhythm.”
.
Bryzgalov started 6 in a row from Dec. 2nd to Dec. 13th. His save percentages: 0.864, 0.947, 0.833, 0.926, 0.875, 0.969.
Stinker, great, stinker, great, stinker, great. The stretch of starting him six times in 12 days didn’t get him into a rhythm (his next start after a game off: 0.750).
I’d really love if someone took the time to actually test whether “Give Bryz consecutive starts, he plays better” is true. Until then, it’s a cliche that has no basis in fact.

But we’d have to try it to have any data to work with. Or look for a long string of consecutive starts while he was with Phoenix. But that doesn’t count since it was in Phoenix, right?

I can’t say yet whether I believe it or not. I want to find out. So we have to try it.

The disregarding his starts in Phoenix part totally was sarcasm. I don’t know if there’s any data there that would be of value. The rest was serious, we have to try it here to find out.

Six starts in a row once in a season is not enough for me. Look at how many Rinne or Howard get in a row. Six starts is not enough and only doing it once is also not enough.
.
Why not? You should also look at how poor the backups in Nashville and Detroit are, since that probably has something to do with their starts.
Either way, I want people to either study whether Bryzgalov does better with consecutive starts or stop saying he does.

Just to be clear. I am not saying he does better with consecutive starts, I am saying that I want to see them do it. Six straight once is not enough.
Lindback’s numbers 2.70 gaa .897 sv%
Bob’s numbers 2.90 gaa .902 sv%
I don’t understand why people can bash Bryz, but Bob’s play gets a pass. Bob has been worse than Bryz and not seeing the same competition as Bryz.
.
I don’t understand why people can bash Bryz, but Bob’s play gets a pass.
But Bryz is the VETERAN #1 GOALIE we went and spent all that dough on last summer who’s supposed to come in and single-handedly lead us to the Cup. Bob is just some kid who had a decent rookie year last year, but not good enough to win the aforementioned Cup. IMO, Bryz is bashed mostly because of the humongous big expectations people have set for him.

I don’t understand then. You want him to start 7 or 8 times in a row, even though you don’t expect there to be any benefit from that.

I don’t know either way. I don’t think this is that hard to understand. I want them to do it and lets see what happens. Number one goalies get more than six starts in a row once during the year.
.
To recap:
You: “I want them to do this.”
Me: “Why?”
You: “I don’t know. He does it.”

In the past he has been given a lot of starts in a row and was successful. Now while I know that was on a different team with different players, I would like to see the Flyers try this approach with Bryz again. I don’t know if it will work or not but I have proof that it has worked in the past though on a different team. In conclusion, I would like the Flyers to string 8 or so games together with Bryz in net.
.
We’re back to the very beginning of our conversation.
In the past he has been given a lot of starts in a row and was successful.
So let me just copy paste what I said three days ago: “I’d really love if someone took the time to actually test whether "Give Bryz consecutive starts, he plays better" is true. Until then, it’s a cliche that has no basis in fact.”
You claim to have proof that it has worked in the past, but you have not presented this proof.

from what I can tell I got a 9 game stretch last year in March where his sv% was as follows: 1.00, .947, .889, .972, .929, .967, 1.00, .875, .978. I will take that all day long.
.
And as you can tell, he didn’t gradually get better. He didn’t need to play game 5 to get on a roll, he already had three stellar games out of four.
So I don’t know how this supports your claim that he needs 9 games to get into a rhythm.

Defense
Is it simply a “Bring in a star defensemen and all our problems are solved” issue? I mean a single defensemen can play almost 30 minutes a night, I think in the playoffs Prong and Timo averaged a combined 70 minutes.
Or is it the defensemen we have. That Coburn and Mez have to go. Maybe Carle. The entire core we built around may just need to be sent off the team. There’s no excuse for this. I know teams lose games, and I know teams slump, but this doesn’t seem like a slump, it seems like a flaw being exploited.
It's in his wheelhouse!!

Over the last 4 games (3 loses 1 win, with one lose been against the Islander where Nabakov stole one) the team have allowed fewer shots then there season avg in every game. You know the difference between now and earlier when we won? Special teams, the Flyers are 3/29 on the PP in the month of February, while the PK is 9/35. Had the special team just been performing at there season avg over the last 4 games, we would have won a fewer more games in the month of February.

This team is soft. Where’s the accountability?
