Here's the bottom line people!

We were beaten this weekend by two teams better then us at this time. No one shit the sheets or screwed the pooch. This is a transition team right now and we got soiled by early success and have unrealistic expectations. I loved the success and the promise this new team showed so far this season. This team is competitive as hell. Calm down!

They need two or three really good, hard practices and get into the gym for a couple of days. Not a bag skate but up tempo practice sessions.

I also think they need a defenseman. I never thought I’d say this, but let’s get Hal Gill.

by mantis toboggan on Feb 13, 2012 8:37 AM EST up reply actions

Ehh, Lavy wants the game up tempo he is just not going to do that at all. I am not sure if this person exists to get but another body isn’t what is going to fix the recent breakdowns. They have to refocus their mission and responsibilities on the ice. Hockey players need practice to stay focused.

This. One or two different defensemen might end up being an upgrade but won’t fix the mental/positioning problems they face right now. And it won’t cure any issues with forwards playing D consistently.

Help the penalty kill, for one. He’s slow but he’s a big solid defenseman who can clear the front of the net, which is something we need.

by mantis toboggan on Feb 13, 2012 9:37 AM EST up reply actions

I think he’s just too slow for the rest of the system. You can’t afford to dress a guy every night simply to stand in front of the net on the pk. We need a guy who can keep up with the fast-paced attack system and still bring grit to our own slot.

by mattsotheran on Feb 13, 2012 9:45 AM EST up reply actions

If this guy’s available, sure. But if not I’d take Hal Gill and the risk that he slows the whole team down. The front of the Flyers net is laughably easy real estate right now.

by mantis toboggan on Feb 13, 2012 9:54 AM EST up reply actions

Why take the risk? What do we give up to acquire him? If it’s more than a 4th round, not a chance.

by mattsotheran on Feb 13, 2012 10:24 AM EST up reply actions

I’d give up a 3rd for him. I really don’t think it’s all that risky of an acquisition.

by mantis toboggan on Feb 13, 2012 10:31 AM EST up reply actions

Well, he’s so slow he’d never get caught up-ice the way the current crew seems to keep doing.

What’s that gonna do but increase the risk of injury and put unnecessary wear on players. If your conditioning in the middle of a competition phase, your doing something wrong. All that work should have been done in the off season. Once the season starts the games should be considered the main workout and everything else should be done to maintain the work that was done in the off season preparatory phase.

by j reed on Feb 13, 2012 3:13 PM EST up reply actions

I am not a physical therapist or trainer, but my dad is one. As you play the games over the course of the season you actually lose your physical fitness and run on mostly instinct and adrenaline. Hockey players need practice and off ice workouts to work on both fitness and game plan. If anything, playing a lot of games and having fewer practices generates bad habits which can bloom into the problems you see on the ice right now. The best thing for a hockey player is to stay on the ice and in the gym. The worst thing you can do to a hockey player is keep him from the rink.

I got offered Couture and Backes for Giroux….I love G, of course, but I think I’m tempted to take this one. I’d have to send some other “crap” guy back like Wilson, or Hagelin, or Hodgson, Voracek, Kostisyn, Korpikoski, (Corey) Potter, or (Andy) MacDonald.

I’m tempted to make the trade and make him take or else drop like MacDonald or Potter.

The only thing that bothers me from the article is Lavy wanting wins to stay at the top of the conference. I never got the point of keeping on the gas for conference or division rank. Who gives a shit if you come in 1st or 8th? Just do what is best for the team and get into the playoffs. Worry about the team’s play not the points.

Your memory fails you again! Is it a coincidence that it disagrees with your premise?

The 09-10 Flyers under John Stevens: 13-11-1 (0.540)
The 09-10 Flyers under Peter Laviolette: 28-24-5 (0.535)

Laviolette didn’t exactly “right the ship”. Further, the 09-10 Flyers record “towards the end”:

9-10-3 Post-Olympic break. 5-7-1 Post-St. Patrick’s Day. 3-3 in April.

by Phalange on Feb 13, 2012 11:19 AM EST up reply actions

Maybe, but I think what that study was doing is taking conventional wisdom – if you have a good record down the stretch, you win in the playoffs – and seeing if it’s true. It isn’t attempting to show how well the team was playing, but rather if what most people think is true.

Turns out the Flyers are just horrible examples for this. The Caps were streaking (9-1-0) when the Flyers upset them, but the Flyers were streaking too (7-2-1). In 2010, the Flyers were slumping (4-5-1) and still managed to win, beating the Devils (5-2-3).

I just finished reading it and wow the flyers had the same record record over the last 10 games and one year got knocked out in the first round and the next year went to the finals. But I did like what Chen said here:

I’m a big believer in habits on the ice, both good and bad. During losing streaks, teams get into bad habits — defensemen chase the puck, forwards try to stick-handle through everyone and goalies get overwhelmed. Even though those are all correctable issues, it all comes from individuals trying too hard and not sticking with the team concept.

If that is not the last 3 weeks around here I don’t know how else to explain it.

It's the defense, again.

It’s very similar to last year. The defense is worn down by the absence of a guy that was signed to take a large amount ice time and leadership. Mez and Timmo are exhausted, Carle and Coburn have reverted to their down-side alter egos and the depth players have not really stepped up to take any of the load. It’s just like last year. However, like last year, I don’t think this team is divided. Usually in times of trouble the locker room division is being leaked all over the place and I haven’t heard any of that talk, like last year.

Its not the defense, its special teams not performing. The PK is a terrible and the PP cant score a goal. Also as somebody else said, we have played some really really good teams in the month of Ferbruary, Predators, Leafs, 2xrangers, Devils, Islanders (have been playing really well lately, but ofcourse not as good as the rest of the teams we played) and the Wings.
The last half of the month we only face 2 good teams in the Pens and Sharks, but all 6 games are winnable.

by Anders Jensen on Feb 13, 2012 7:57 AM EST up reply actions

It’s a total team effort but its the defense and not that it’s not justified. But the even on the power play the communication between the defensemen is horrible. Neither guy seems to no who is responsible for who. Either both guys are in the slot or behind the net. Leaving their assignments without coverage in slot. The defense is especially out of sorts.

Still allowing a goal on 30% of the PKs make em look worse then they are, also converting 0 PPs for goals put so much more pressure on the whole team. Take the Rangers game, had the PK just stopped one of the early Rangers PP and scored on one them self, that game could easy have been won.

by Anders Jensen on Feb 13, 2012 8:17 AM EST up reply actions

The whole team is off kilter right now but I just see a lot of the breakdowns starting with the defense. They aren’t solely responsible for the slump.

Two weeks when they win 5 of 6 everything changes. Mixed in this slump were good wins over good teams TOR and NSH I just think the Rangers own us and DET in DET is pretty tough regardless. Flyers are what they are a 4-6 seed and plenty of them have won the Cup over the years.

But if that is your fate and you have righted the ship by dropping back ten and punting for a while maybe you beat one of these teams. Boston has played a lot of hockey between last year and this and I would not be surprised if it catches up with them late in the season. Getting them in the first round might not be as bad as you think.

Unless he was doing something stupid and overtraining which is impossible for any of us to know but it certainly wouldn’t be anything out of the ordinary for an athlete to do something like that.

by j reed on Feb 13, 2012 3:23 PM EST up reply actions

Over than overtraining the only thing that could account for something like that is age because older players take longer to recover. But I think they are about the same age or at least there isn’t enough difference to be that concerned with.

He has had spurts of jump but it seems he is almost daydreaming out there. He is not out of shape or dumb so I believe he is wearing down. I really think it looks a lot like last year to me and he seemed worn down at this time last year. This is my perception that a large part of the game is mental and breakdowns seem to happen when guys lose focus. They haven’t forgotten how to play the game so I attribute breakdowns guys being tired.

haha, we don’t agree. This defense is missing one good defenseman. So long as Bourdon is saddling Carle and Gus is saddling Mesz, the defense will look bad. Doesn’t need to be an alpha male, it could simply be a #5 defenseman.

There is more to just being good at hockey. On paper the Capitals are really good at hockey, but something is missing on the ice. Teams are like soldiers and they do better when following a leader and a mission.

On paper, the Capitals are not very good at hockey. They were, 2 years ago, but have you looked at their roster lately? They have no second line.

Every team has a mission, it’s not hard to follow that. Every team has a leader, for that matter, too. Is Dan Bylsma an Alpha? Can you name the Alpha on the Red Wings?

I’ll buy that (and yes, I realize I’m opening the can o’worms for Geoff or Eric to show otherwise with some stats). But then … doesn’t everyone have an ‘off’ day sometimes? I mean, even G went through a relative mini-slump there for a bit. The only players that are absolutely consistent are Timonen and Talbot (and possibly Scooter), and even they have bad games. We all knew Carle was capable of some exceptionally awful games (he always has) and Cobie could be an absolute liability at times (like he was at the start of last season). But we also know that they recover and play great hockey more often than crappy hockey. I think right now, the fact that Carle is playing with a JV partner is exposing his mistakes more; I’d even wager that Cobie’s gaffes are coming on the shift change more often than not.

I was believing they were over using Mez but Carle is the leader in TOI. I guess in reality all three of them, Mez, Carle & Coburn are up and down players, but recently they all look down. They need to refocus and someone needs to get the defense together in the film room and come to an agreement what their assignments and responsibilities are on the ice.

I am with M Defense has been bad get a depth guy for 3rd or later picks fine no need to go all in this just isn’t going to be the year for that. PK had a rough weekend but for the most part has been good enough. Also think they need a shot from the point as well. The pucks from the blue line are just not getting through and the shooters aren’t getting any respect the opposition is just collapsing daring our defense to skate up and make a play but nothing. There is this guy Pronger that pretty much solves all those problems. It is real shame we will never know how good this team good be due to that unfortunate injury.

He was a player development coach after he retired, but he decided to go back home to the Quebec and Hatcher took his place. Last I remember hearing for certain, he did a radio interview during the 2010 playoffs where he talked about coaching youth hockey up where he is in the Blainville area.

Geoff, I know. I would like both Gill or Allen. I was trying to say that any defenseman you get won’t fit the system, and the same weaknesses will be exposed. The only defenseman that can truly make Lavvy’s system the way it works and be a potential upgrade is someone of Chris Pronger’s ability.

Bryan Allen or Hal Gill will not improve the defense unless Lavvy changes his scheme to accomodate his defensemen

Lavy’s system is not the problem they Flyers are not getting beat on the rushes or by being over aggressive they are getting beat in defensive zone coverage in particularly in and around the net that has nothing to due with system but talent. That last thing this team needs to do is play less aggressively and more in their defensive zone as result. Because they suck in the defensive zone.

All systems win. There is no perfect system and since the lockout teams that SCORE the most goals have the most success. The Blackhawks weren’t a defensive team that beat the Flyers. The only thing that matters is that you have a system and Lavy does.

You just need both guys communicating despite their talents. The recent breakdowns are not the system, but rather missed assignments. The Rangers keep moving around the net and and create and odd man situation alone coming from the dot or the corner. They arent even trying to battle the crease. The communication broke down on Saturday and the two d-men and the center weren’t staying with their assignments.

As I said above not seeing this post if they Flyers play less aggressively they will be playing more in their defensive zone which is playing into their biggest weakness defensive coverage.

Pronger isn’t fast neither was SOD and they both effective in Lavy’s system

You need one ‘up’ defenseman and one ‘back’ defenseman. It needn’t always be the same guys, but on any defensive play one guy gets the rear and one the front. So at the blue line, one guy steps up for the hit/takeaway, and one guy is in support. At the circles, one guy is in the slot and one has the boards. Below the circles, one guy has the crease and one has behind the net. Now, because in the modern NHL, you usually want at least one defenseman up in the offensive play, pairing a more offensively-oriented d-man with a more defensive defenseman makes sense. In that event, the odds are that the offensive guy will get ‘pinched’ more at the upper end of the defensive zone, and the less-offensive fellow gets the back-end responsibility.

My eyes. Wellwood has better vision and stick skill, while Zolnierczyk is faster. The difference is that Zolnierczyk’s skillset is more easily translatable to the NHL while Wellwood’s needs adjustment. And while I hate saying this, I think Zolnierczyk is more consistent – or at least appears to be so.

Ha ha, I kinda figured. So little data is tracked/ published from which to draw statistical inferences (AHL), or such small sample sizes for those two (NHL), leaves the ol’ eye test as the only method. Honestly, why don’t they track and publish the same data at the AHL level?
I don’t disagree. Actually, I can’t disagree-you’ve seen them both more often than I. Do you see Wellwood ever taking a full-time slot for NHL team?

by mtitanic on Feb 13, 2012 11:07 PM EST up reply actions

The AHL doesn’t track the same data simply because they don’t have the capability to. A team like Hershey can, but Adirondack? Lake Erie? There just isn’t the technology or money to make it feasible.

I think Wellwood has the ability to be a top-9 forward in the NHL, I just don’t think he’ll ever get there. I certainly don’t see him getting there here, and once guys are off their ELCs, it’s really difficult for them to earn a call-up even on weaker teams.

Just a quick look at the AHL’s top scorers shows Pat Maroon in 7th, Jon Matsumoto in 8th, T.J. Hensick in 3rd, and those are just the guys I know who are on their second NHL franchise. They’ve proven to be among the best AHL scorers, but Hensick couldn’t latch onto a crappy Avalanche team, and he’s not unable to crack the Blues. Matsumoto can’t crack a crappy Hurricanes team and Maroon can’t crack a crappy Ducks team.

It’s a shame, but I don’t think Wellwood will be one of the few to break into the NHL at age of 23.

Yep, about what I suspect too, except I would have said “bottom-6” instead of “top-9”.
Matsumoto is one I never understood. 3rd round pick, seemed a decent scorer, never got a call-up, then shipped to CAR for a 7th rounder. I never heard anything about him, let alone anything negative. I just don’t get why he was handled in such a manner.

I don’t really think there’s much difference between bottom six and top-9, since we’re both saying third liner. I just put a more optimistic ring around it :)

It’s just so difficult to tell if momentum lifts the player or not. The one thing I can say for certain is that if momentum is lifting you off of your skates, you’ve finished the check high (or raised your body in the middle of the check). Which might be just as bad as actually leaving your skates.

by mattsotheran on Feb 13, 2012 11:16 AM EST up reply actions

If you watch every check along the boards, the player embraces him self for the check and that way create upwards momentum. Take a look at how many checks along the boards end with the checking player leaving his feet after the hit.

  • Feb 6: Van Riemsdyk (concussion) remains out indefinitely, PhiladelphiaFlyers.com reports.
  • Feb 8: Van Riemsdyk (concussion) acknowledged some improvement when he spoke to the media Tuesday, but he’s still not ready to return to action, the Norristown Times-Herald reports.
  • Feb 9: van Riemsdyk (concussion) could return to action Thursday against the Maple Leafs, Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News reports.
  • Feb 9: van Riemsdyk (concussion) was not on the ice for Thursday’s morning skate, Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News reports.
  • Feb 10: van Riemsdyk (concussion) did not practice Friday, Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News reports.
  • Feb 11: van Riemsdyk continues to battle post-concussion syndrome and may not return “for awhile,” Sam Carchidi of Philly.com reports.

HE’S NOT DAY-TO-DAY!!!

But since he’s labeled DTD now, I’m blocked from making any moves since I have an “ineligible player on IR”.

until you make the appropriate room for him, yup. Or you could just drop him, depending on how many weeks you have left in the season

Yeah, I’m torn. There are 5 more weeks of the regular season, then the playoffs start. I’ve regained sole possession of 2nd place and am chipping away at the lead the first place team has over me. I could probably handle JVR sitting on my bench. But maybe he’s just not worth worrying about. Who knows when he will be back. And if anybody else tried to pick him up, they can’t put him on IR either, so maybe it’s safe.

For what it’s worth, JvR was recently dropped in our league, was claimed on waivers, then dropped again and cleared waivers. I picked him up and stashed him on IR. If he had been DTD on Yahoo (not IR) I wouldn’t have picked him up.

The good thing for me is that this is a league with coworkers and some other friends. They’re mostly Caps fans, aside from my dad and I. So the only person who would likely be interested in JVR is my dad. Caps fans won’t notice him.

If the Flyers could just start winning again then everything would be rosey and we wouldn’t have to figure out who to blame, and who the Flyers need to acquire as a stop gap. The fact is, this team isn’t good enough to win a Cup this year. And that’s fine. I wish the ownership would accept that and not do something stupid at the trade deadline. Compounding previous bad mistakes by making another one is never good business.

Thirded. When we came into this season, did we expect the Flyers to be in contention? I didn’t. But just because we’re playing better than expected doesn’t mean we shoud go into the deadline in “win now” mode.

This is a great teaching moment for the young team. Get them some good experience and ready to be a legitimate contender next season. Not that I’m writing off this season, but I just don’t think the Flyers are a cup team just yet.

by mantis toboggan on Feb 13, 2012 10:41 AM EST up reply actions

Again, what kind of return would you expect? I’d take Marc Staal for a 3rd, but Hal Gill for a 3rd is lopsided to me.

by mattsotheran on Feb 13, 2012 10:47 AM EST up reply actions

I guess I don’t place as much value on a 3rd round pick as you do. To get another defenseman that can help you in the playoffs is worth a 3rd rounder to me. What player you would get at that price is up for debate but I think that’s a price worth paying.

by mantis toboggan on Feb 13, 2012 10:52 AM EST up reply actions

Again, to me it just depends. I wouldn’t mind using a 3rd to get a younger D with some upside, but I don’t want to waste it (IMO) to get a older, pending UFA D like Gill.

Definitely not as crucial as 1st or 2nd rounders, but 3rds are certainly not worthless. Notable 3rd rounders in the 90s:

Chris Therien (1990)
Chris Osgood (1991)
Vaclav Prospal (1993)
Sheldon Souray (1994)
Chris Drury (1994)
Zdeno Chara (1996)
Brad Richards (1998)
Brian Gionta (1998)

I’m not implying all 3rd rounders are good (lol, Matt Walker, 1998) or bad, but the pick is certainly worth holding onto.

His numbers are way above average, but he played in a different era where the numbers are very different.

He led the league in save percentage three straight years, and four of five — with .900, .908, .912, .906, and .914.

He was in the top ten in save percentage 15 times in his career and in the top five 9 times. He was unquestionably the best goalie in the years before Hasek came into the league and has a decent case for #2 goalie during the Hasek era.

I’m not trying to slam on you or anything like that, you made a mistake, whatever, we all do it. But I can see how people who are fans of Spider Man would get annoyed by that. Hell, speaking from personal experience, and not even as a comic book fan, I get angry when people get details wrong, whether they are major or minor.

It’s funny depending on who they have on the show. Certain people don’t add anything to it but there’s some decent behind the scenes stuff each week and if they have a particularly good comedian or a higher up like Kirkman it’s usually pretty good.

I watched Comic Book Men and it was interesting. It couldn’t decide if it wanted to be Pawn Stars or Real Housewives so it’s kinda in between. One thing is for sure, Bryan Johnson got fucking FAT! Also he’s got a terrible beard.

However, I can see how you might have made that mistake given the new trailer. In it Martin Sheen says “That belonged to your father.” Given Sheen’s age it’s not hard to infer it’s his gramps.

Playoff Seeding

You really have no say in determining it but if this team continues to struggle and gets passed by the Pens and Devils, it could be the best possible thing for them. I’ll take how you as a team are playing over where you are seeded anyday but if this slump continues yet they are able to get healthy (JVR) maybe trade for a UFA D-man like Gill or Allen then right things before the playoffs start, going in as the 6th seed might be their best option. Just to try and put more of an optimistic spin on things..

OT: Question for you writers and bloggers out there. I have a personal blog, nothing particularly interesting, just my musings about random things, but I fell behind in writing during grad school and pretty much stopped updating it. I’d like to get going again, but am having trouble. I enjoy having the blog and writing, but I feel bad about neglecting it before and it’s preventing me from re-starting. I feel like I’ll just fall behind and stop again. Any tips on how to get myself kickstarted and back into the habit of writing regularly? I’m thinking about adding a new category to write about the new ice cream flavors I make at home, just as something simple to write about that I know I will do regularly.

I will say, one thing I learned while writing before is that short posts are okay. Everything doesn’t have to be a novel. In fact, sometimes writing novels about every subject can be bad. If I don’t have a lot to say, just put down what I have. Short can still be interesting.

Pictures are good too. (Naked women, of course, for M.)

I thought the big news about Hovinen when we signed him was that he could be ready in a couple years.

by mattsotheran on Feb 13, 2012 10:49 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah the fact that he’s like 9 and a half feet tall and covers a shitload of net was exciting too, just a thought since there’s apparently a goalie controversy in Philadelphia for the first time ever all of the sudden.

by DannyMcG on Feb 13, 2012 10:59 AM EST up reply actions

Honestly, a lot of us are in the dumps about how we’ve played recently, and that’s to be expected. No one is jumping ship yet but we’re still one of the top 3-4 teams in the conference, in my opinion. Could we make it to the Cup? Prrrrrrobably not, but I could see the ECF on the horizon.

The thing is we do have an amazing young core group of players with a great veteran mix. If the team stays together and maybe adds a piece here or there in the off-season, the team’s chemistry should get better as a whole and we ‘should’ be on the upswing for the next several years. Sure there’s the questions of" trade who for what" or “move x players to make $Y available for Z free agent”, but that talk will always be going on.

My only fear is that the Flyers are going to be like last year where they just crapped out midway through February and all of March, and basically limped into the playoffs. It’s hard to watch the team have a great first half then suddenly bottom out.

I new +/- had value!

Dale Hunter made the decision on Thursday night to sit Mike Knuble, the first time the 39-year-old now-defensive specialist has been a healthy scratch since 2002-03. On Saturday, the reason why Hunter made the decision was revealed. “He told me I wasn’t going to play and just kind of said, ‘You haven’t scored in a while and have a bad plus-minus,’” Knuble told reporters.

I think having a team with 7 or 10 rookies has a lot to do with what’s going on which really isn’t that bad relative to the standings. In fact it’s pretty amazing. That’s half the god damn team.
