I had this crazy moment this morning when I thought: “hold up, why did we trade Minnesota and LA’s picks instead of trading our own picks? Wouldn’t that be better for us without being a deal breaker?” Then I thought “why would we want to keep our own picks?” Then I thought “we need our own picks to offer sheet RFAs!”
SO who’s an RFA that we’re going to offer sheet at the end of this season?? Because we’re going for him.
Seriously though, I am intrigued at the fact that we traded Minnesota’s third instead of our own (unless we got rid of our own and I’m just not aware of it).
Simon Gagne AND Mike Richards may move between towns, wear new jerseys and call different arenas home but, at the end of the day, they will both always be Philadelphia Flyers.
One day Sean Couturier will win the Conn Smythe. You heard it here first.

We traded our 2nd round pick to Tampa last year for Meszaros rights. And the 3rd pick to Phoenix for Bryzgalov rights.
Posting all the way from sunny Manchester, England.
We traded our 2012 second round pick in a trade in the 2010 offseason? I think that says everything about our dislike of all second round picks.
We can still offer a contract someone between 3.1 million and 4.7 million and give up our first and third (no second required).

Well, if we want to pretend that offer sheets do actually happen, just for a bit of fun….

Hows he done since he went to Colorado? I know he was something of a disappointment in St Louis (Hence the trade).
Posting all the way from sunny Manchester, England.
I think that trade was win win for both clubs but need to be corrected. Erik Johnson is also primed to be traded at the deadline. With only 2.6 million cap hit and a pending RFA he could be added to the Flyers this season. He is also the much needed right handed shoot and young at only 22 years of age. His numbers don’t scream huge contract when he resigns either and could possibly resign to Giroux like contract. Also the Blues didn’t get a whole lot in return for him when they traded him.

This would be pretty awesome thing. Living in MO, I got to watch him a bit. Even though he hasn’t really lived up to his expectations, I think he’s still got a boatload of potential.

Its not very often a defenceman goes first though, so its hard to know what to expect.
I mean, he must be the only one in maybe….15 years?

Not sure – I’m no scout. But I think it’s safe to expect more from him than he has recently shown. Plus, he’s slumping a bit this year in Colorado and last year in StL.

Wayne Simmonds and Max Talbot
Both these guys were viewed as good depth players who weren’t going to add too much to the team offensively (prior to this season). However, I feel they have proven us wrong. Simmer’s on pace for 28 goals and 51 points for the season. He’s still only 23, so there’s absolutely no reason to think he’ll peak here. He may well have a 30+ goal season at some point in the future, which would be absolutely amazing. He’s a vital part of our powerplay, which is making him a lot more valuable to us than he was to LA. Talbot is on pace for 23 goals – which is also well beyond expectations.
On a related note: the Richards trade is now Mike Richards and Darroll Powe for Brayden Schenn, Wayne Simmonds and Nicklas Grossman. The jury’s still out though; given what a player Richards is.
Simon Gagne AND Mike Richards may move between towns, wear new jerseys and call different arenas home but, at the end of the day, they will both always be Philadelphia Flyers.

If simmonds becomes a perennial 25 goal scorer and ups his assist total I think we win that trade, got knows we won the carter trade. If schenn only becomes a 20 goal scorer that’s still 40plus goals added and prob 75 to 100 points

I was just going to post a comment like this. Before the season I read comments from people saying that Simmonds isn’t a 20+20 guy and to not expect much offense from him, he is a just a really good third liner, etc. I’m glad he proved them wrong. Los Angeles Flyer fans must be salty we are getting this great production out of him.

by Rrainone on Feb 17, 2012 7:45 AM EST via mobile up reply actions
It is not only the expectations on Simmonds there are a lot of comments that were made which are not proving to be true. Simmonds is one of my favorite “surprises” since I really like the way he plays the others:
The Flyers are not going to be anywhere near as good this year as last year (on pace to be within one win and 4 pts of their totals from last year pretty close to as good as they were last year).
You can never replace the scoring from losing Carter/ Richards/ Leino/ Versteeg (not only replaced but on pace to score 12 more goals, and currently the highest scoring team in the league and in the top 3 in goals per game).
I hope the this trend continues specifically with they can’t win the cup being proven false
Don’t forget “now the team will have a gritty defensive focus that will serve them better in the playoffs” and “finally an elite goalie who can carry the team”.

Yeah, I never got to see much of Simmonds when he was in LA, but I assume they just didn’t use him the way we do? Which is surprising, because he looks right at home playing the tough spots on the ice.

Is that what he’s actually getting paid, or is that just his cap hit? I believe his original contract was in the $7-8m a year range, wasn’t it?

Okay, it looks like there was about $28m left when it was bought out, and I believe the buyout’s were for 2/3 of the salary, right? So that makes sense that there was about $17.5m left, and it just got stretched out over 8 years…..is this correct?
Lucky bastard…..and he’s playing over in the KHL. Wonder if his contract over here affects that?

Yeah, the way I see it: I grabbed Kostitsyn off waivers a couple weeks ago. If I can use a guy I grabbed off waivers – who, admittedly, I’m proud to say I grabbed him when he was sucking – and add him to Marian Hossa – who I love drafting in the middle rounds, he’s always undervalued – and turn him into Zetterberg, I’m doing it.
I don’t often make moves like this, but after being in first all year, it’s time to turn my moneyball strategy into some elite players.

I think it makes you weaker, but that’s just me (what truly scared me about your team was your RW’s; this makes an already strong LW marginally stronger, while significantly weakening your RW). Hossa was another Wideman esc pick where you nabbed him when I had him targeted. I had 3 guys targeted after my 4th pick at RW, none of them made it to me.
Also, 5th round is hardly middle, it’s top 3rd.
being obnoxious and self righteous while ignoring the point since 9/29/11
Some reason I thought I grabbed him in 7th. Whatever.
I don’t look at it as “it makes this position marginally stronger, that position significantly weaker”. I look at it as “Zetterberg > Hossa, by about one Kostitsyn.”

Are you finally seeing why I coveted a RW 1st round Don? I still think its the steepest dropoff from elite to “meh” of any position. I think if they werent so liberal about letting centers slot LW/RW I’d have a more solid lock on top 3.

I never said it was bad, I just don’t like Perry that much especially over Malkin at 3; plus I also saw everyone I wanted available in rounds 4 and 5. Not to mention Neal was there in the 8th Round.
being obnoxious and self righteous while ignoring the point since 9/29/11
Neal came out of nowhere far as I’m concerned. Maybe next year I will rescind my “no drafting Penguins” policy. It makes it hard to draft competitively.
My initial response was, "I hate you so much right now" but I changed it.
by DLJr on Oct 19, 2011 1:15 PM EDT
Be that as it may, it doesn’t change the fact that you can get plenty of RW’s outside of the top 3, and a ton of quality in Round 4 or 5. And even though Neal was a surprise this year, it’s not like he is a bad fantasy player in a 20 team league at RW.
Yeah, not drafting Pens is a really bad strategy.

Still one of the worst trades the Flyers ever made.

Eric Wellwood
Is he in line for a playoff roster spot? Gotta believe we won’t be seeing much of Sestito, Shelley, or Rinaldo. And I think there is still an APB out on Harry Z’s whereabouts so assuming everyone is healthy (JVR, Briere) there is one spot open, is it his?
Rinaldo played in the playoffs last year. He made the team out of camp this year. Nothing has happened to convince me Lavy will take him out of the lineup for someone Rinaldo beat out of a job at least twice.

Ah, okay.
If JVR is still out for the playoffs, I’d love if the Flyers were smart enough to have Couturier/Wellwood/Zolnierczyk as the fourth line. I think the odds of that happening – with Rinaldo, Shelley, and Sestito all healthy – are 0.9%.
Rinaldo beat out Shelly, Sestito, Wellwood, Holmstrom, Kalinski, and Testwuide to play in the playoffs last year. Rinaldo beat out Shelly, Sestito, Wellwood, Holmstrom, Kalinski, Zolnierczyk, Nodl, and Testwuide to start the year in the opening day lineup. If he’s healthy, Laviolette will play him.

My main concern is the talk of his turnovers. As long as he can get the puck safely to someone else to take it up ice, I think he’ll be fine.

I went last year with my brother. We had a good time. Seeing and meeting the players up close was cool. Alumni row is VERY popular and the line for that gets insanely long, especially when the general admission folks are let in. If I remember, it’s one set price for all the alumni players but I don’t remember the cost. Wasn’t expensive.
As for the current team, I think it was $15 for two autographs for each player. The more popular Flyers (G, Jagr, Briere, JVR) are always sold out early -they run $25 per autograph.
The Legion of Doom would still kick butt today!

And funny story my friend played guitar hero with G a few years and beat him.

Whither Danny?
Not much mention here of losing Danny after barely three minutes of TOI. If concussion symptoms have returned, put yourself in his position. He’s a multimillionaire, he has a family of young boys, and he has witnessed the haunting specter of the player formerly known as Pronger. Stitching up a lip is one thing, but getting an injured brain back in place is something else. JVR should take note of Danny’s outcome, and return iff all symptoms have disappeared.

So many morons on hockey blogs and sports news sites are saying we vastly overpaid for Grossman, citing that he only has 5 points as an example. Do people realize that defenseman are usually supposed to play uh… defense? DURR WHAT’S A DEFENSIVE DEFENSEMAN HURRRRR
Late 2nd and 3rd round picks are not a lot to give up for a underpaid defensive defenseman who gets a shit ton of blocks and hits, logs almost 20 minutes a game, and has great size and physicality.
It is an overpayment for a guy who is potentially only going to play 30ish games on your team. And they aren’t both late round picks, they are mid to possibly late round picks depending on if LA gets into the playoffs.
It’s not the worst trade ever, not by a long shot but it is an overpayment.
Ed Snider is a crotchety old fuck.
That is all.
At any other time of the year, it would be an overpayment for a role player who is UFA bound, and with the upcoming draft being considered pretty deep.
But seeing that it’s the trade deadline, with overpayment being the norm, and almost a necessity, the Flyers probably are getting fair value.
It all changes, of course, if Grossman plays well enough that the Flyers choose to lock him up and he becomes a long-term asset.
But seeing that it’s the trade deadline, with overpayment being the norm, and almost a necessity, the Flyers probably are getting fair value.
I agree with the first part and disagree with the second.
Is overpaying at the deadline the norm? Probably.
But does that mean they are getting value? Not to me it doesn’t. . Just because you most likely have to overpay to get a move done doesn’t mean you have to make a move.
If the Flyers can lock him up to a decent cap hit, which I am not sure they will have the ability to even do, then I would say it’s a decent deal. But I don’t see how they are going to have the money for it without losing some dollars somewhere else.
Ed Snider is a crotchety old fuck.
That is all.
But does that mean they are getting value? Not to me it doesn’t. . Just because you most likely have to overpay to get a move done doesn’t mean you have to make a move.
Maybe fair value isn’t the right term to use here… probably expected value is more accurate.
it seems like a seller’s market this year, at least so far and especially for defensemen, so that needs to be factored in a little too.

Yeah, I’m hearing so many people saying he was a stupid acquisition because we can’t score. That’s not why we wanted him! And the best part, we didn’t have to give up any (current roster) scoring to get him. Two picks, and the specific rounds, may be overpayment to some, but I’m still pretty happy.

THN predicts 50-50 chance the Flyers buy-out Bryz if given the option after the season.
Philadelphia
Likeliest buyout: Say it with me: Il-ya Bryz-ga-lov (clap-clap, clap-clap-clap)! I know time flies as you get older, but eight years from now (when the inconsistent goalie’s contract expires) feels like a century away.
Likelihood team buys him out: 3. It sounds preposterous, the idea Flyers owner Ed Snider would cut a check for two-thirds of the $40 million the team owes Bryzgalov over the next eight years. But never underestimate Snider’s competitiveness (or his considerable personal fortune). If Bryzgalov belly-flops in the playoffs, there’s every chance the team could reverse course on its riskiest investment.

I hope they buy him out.
And this has nothing to do with Bryz and how he has done this year. There was virtually no chance he was ever going to play upto his salary, there may be two goalies in the NHL that could, but this has everything to do with the fact that the money could be better spent elsewhere.
Ed Snider is a crotchety old fuck.
That is all.
Let’s pretend Snider is hell-bent on getting rid of the guy… who steps in as #1? Bob? He hasn’t really shown that he’s consistent enough to be counted on. Have you taken a look at the upcoming UFA goalie class? Yikes. I guess you could try to make a deal for a Luongo or a Miller… but those contracts are pretty bad, too.
Better to ride it out w/ Bryz, IMO. At least until Hovinen shows up and steals the job out from under him! :)
You’re right, Bob hasn’t looked fantastic, at least lately but I would give him the job at half of what Bryz makes and use the rest of that money to help the defense. That to me would be a better allocation of resources IMO.
Ed Snider is a crotchety old fuck.
That is all.
Or, buying out Briere would create more short-term cap-space, and there are ready-made replacements for him in Schenn, Read, and Couturier.
If they let Jagr go, and if they need to put Pronger on perpetual LTIR, and a bevy of smaller one-way deals coming off the books, they could actually have enough cap space to address all their needs this summer w/o buying anyone out.
I actually wouldn’t be opposed to buying out Briere. But that is mostly because I don’t really like Briere and he too is way overpaid, and as you mentioned, they have other centers to take his spot.
Ed Snider is a crotchety old fuck.
That is all.
There are 3 obvious option: Briere, Bryz, and Pronger.
being obnoxious and self righteous while ignoring the point since 9/29/11
Yep. And the reality is, one of them is probably never playing again so I guess you pretty much have to use it on him, unless putting him on LTIR every year makes sense which I don’t know that it does(or that it doesn’t.)
Ed Snider is a crotchety old fuck.
That is all.
The league may also not allow the LTIR spot for Pronger. To be granted, he has to be attempting to make a comeback. We’re fortunate with Lappy, but maybe not so much with Pronger.

Though, I remember reading somewhere that 35 and older contracts are under discussion for the CBA, possibly taking away the automatic cap hit after retirement.
While that would be nice for Pronger and the Flyers, that opens a whole can of shady cap-circumvention deals.

Which you could solve by putting a limit to how large of a jump is possible in the actual yearly salary, like the last year of contract must be at least 50% of the highest yearly salary.

There’s already the rule that no year to year change in salary can be greater than half of either Year 1 or Year 2 salary, whichever is lower.

I know, but if they expand upon that line of thinking, it would work. If a guy wants to make $7M in one season, then nowhere in the contract should he be making $1M.
by hebrew hammer on Feb 17, 2012 2:16 PM EST up reply actions
Would that make teams hesitant to sign a 31 year old UFA to anything beyond 5 years? Because both player and team know he’s not going to be worth $4 million at age 37, but he could easily be worth $8 million at age 31.
And if teams are signing shorter contracts, will the players want to give up the security of 8, 9, 10, 11 year contracts?
In theory, I like what you’re trying to do. In practice, I don’t see either side liking this solution.

I don’t understand why people want to buy Briere out, he costs 833k more than Bryz and only has 3 years left. Bryz has 8 years left and for more than half that time will have the highest cap hit on the team, unless Giroux gets a better deal than both Richie and Carter got. I’d rather take another 3 years of overpaying Briere than another 8 years of overpaying Bryz, especially when the difference between their cap hits is less than $1M.

As always, it’s possible that the clear language of the CBA has been superseded by secret agreements between the NHL and NHLPA, but here’s what the CBA says:
If the Player is Traded or claimed on Waivers prior to the no-Trade or no-move clause taking effect, the clause does not bind the acquiring Club. An acquiring Club may agree to continue to be bound by the no-Trade or no-move clause, which agreement shall be evidenced in writing to the Player, Central Registry and the NHLPA, in accordance with Exhibit 3 hereof.
The Blue Jackets said they would honor the clause, but we don’t know whether that was a “meh, we’ll let him have the say if he wants” kind of comment or a submitted-in-writing-in-accordance-with-Exhibit-3 kind of formality.

The guys over at Defending Big D are rooting for the Stars to get Carts. They have like 8 picks this draft, and a bunch of cap room, and not very many forwards signed beyond this year. In return for their sending us Grossman, I vote for Dallas getting Carter in exchange for three draft picks and Vernon Fiddler.

Hal Gill to Nashville...
…for Boom Boom Geoffrion’s grandson, Robert Slaney and a 2nd.
Wow, guess the Flyers didn’t overpay for Grossman after all…

This doesn't make any sense
Geoffrion was slated to be a PR dream for the Preds. Even if he would only be a 4th liner, he grew up in Nashville. I don’t get it.
And for Hal Gill? Say what? Not only do the Preds not need him, he will slow them down. They need offense!
Unless…..this is a prelude to a Suter trade (as a frequent Preds viewer on TV, shudder).

(a) Ilya Bryzgalov's contract (b) Ryan Howard's extension (c) Mike Vick's extension (d) Greek bonds from 2009 (e) Papelbon's bloat deal
A Suter AND Weber trade!

Yeah, except I’ve been posting like mad at On the Forecheck and the Preds fans (at least the hard core ones at OTF) are OK with letting Blake go, and somehow think this will bring them closer to a Stanley Cup and convince Suter and Weber to stay. Given that Hal Gill does not play forward, and based on his playoff performance against the Flyers in 2010 seems to barely move at all, it seems unlikely to seriously improve the Preds chances.
But they clearly think Suter won’t be traded now.

Great...
now all the relief i felt yesterday when the Flyers didn’t panic and sell half the team for 2.5 months of Suter/Weber is gone…

funny thing is NSH is the ones set the price so high with their asking prices for Suter and Weber I just don’t see why the hell the need another D-Man
Nodl 12G 127GP, Talbot 10G 44GP
This. OTF is blowing up with mostly positive comments (and my futile attempts at bringing in rational views of Hal Gill).
They need offense. I think at least 2 of their D besides Suter and Weber are at least as good and maybe better than Gill.
Gill would be useful as one of those posts construction crews use on houses when they are tearing down walls.

I was getting it on Twitter too.
Nashville is really exicted about turning a 2nd round pick and a guy who scored 0.82 ppg in the AHL last year at age 24 (who also happened to be a PR benefit) into… Hal Pylon Gill.
I hate the deadline.

It turns out the Preds fans agree with me.., kind of.
He’ll replace Hillen and/or Frankie. That’s an upgrade on our 3rd defense pair.
So they are making the trade the Flyers did for Grossman (for the same purpose) . Yet they have far, far more needs on offense than the Flyers. And they paid more for the pylon, including the native Nashvillian (who’s apparently regressed, but still).
WOULD NOT WANT (were I a serious Preds fan).

I forgot to add the context: this pic is of a pickup team that calls themselves, “The Pylons”. Their names and numbers are on the backs of the orange vests.
If the best thing about the Grossman trade turns out to be that we didn’t get Gill I’m ok with that.

I’ve never purchased a shirt from the BSH store, she says sheepishly. I never know how anything is going to fit and I prefer to try it on in a store. I’m also too lazy to ship it back if I don’t like the fit.

OT - STATS ARTICLES
OK so I have a 16-hr roadtrip starting sunday and thought I’d use the down time to figure out the “advanced statistics” some of you are fond of. In the last year there have been 2 or 3 articles about that stuff. I have previously avoided them because the charts confuse my eyes and make my head want to explode. But I will have lots of time to read multiple times to try to understand it. I thought there were links somewhere on the home page but can’t find them, and I also tried searching and can’t find them. I think they’re probably all written by Geoff. Can someone tell me where to find these? I am not a stats person but trying to broaden my horizons. Who knows, maybe I’ll learn something! Or give myself a headache.
If you’re a newbie with a lot of time on your hands, I recommend Lighthouse Hockey’s very thorough introduction. Some links:
- What does the field of hockey analytics do?
- Context part 1: the importance of ice time
- Context part 2: who gets the toughest assignments?
- Context part 3: accounting for teammates’ contributions
- Context part 4: replacement-level contributions
- The importance of sample size
- Possession metrics (Corsi/Fenwick)
This last one is probably the most important/unusual/useful part of the non-traditional metrics, so if you get tuckered out, skip ahead to that before you stop. And I’ll give a brief synopsis of it so you know what you’re getting into as you read the earlier parts.
The basic premise of a lot of the non-traditional stats work is that because there are so few goals per game, random fluctuations mean that goal totals (and things derived from goals team wins or individual +/-) don’t give a very accurate reflection of true talent.
And even though goals are obviously the objective (or goal, if you will), counting shots is more useful for projecting future performance, because the much larger number of events means that random fluctuations even out better. So instead of looking at goal differential to decide which teams or players are the best, we look at shot differential.
Then it gets messy because there are a few different flavors of shot differential with names like Corsi and Fenwick that tell you nothing about what they do. But the basic premise is that after 20 games, if you want to look for the teams that will finish the year at the top of the standings, look for the ones that are outshooting their opponents, even if they’re not at the top of the standings right now. And look for players whose teams’ shot differential is better with them on the ice than with them off it.

Unfortunately, the LHH series isn’t over yet, so it leaves you with a cliffhanger. I guess from there, take a look at this article on which stats I use to evaluate a forward, and come back from your road trip with questions and we’ll go from there.
