- Bryzgalov was good last time out. More of that?

Malkin may be ugly. But he’s an amazing hockey player. Shades of Mario Lemieux.

i dont agree. kim johnsson did the same thing for the flyers in 2005. end to end goals are impressive, but for a player of malkins caliber it shouldnt be such a surprise. i dont think it shows how skillfull he is at all considering multiple people including johnsson have done it. that being said, i do agree malkin is probably going to win the Hart and i am not saying malkin doesnt have dirty crazy filthy skill and talent. just that an end to end goal really isnt that spectacular.

Yeah I’ve come to terms with it. G has had a great year but Malkin’s carried a team on his back and absolutely dominated the league.
I hate that I have to grudgingly respect the Penguins for being a Stanley Cup contender two years running without the ‘Golden Boy’

Yeah if we ran through the advanced stats we might still find that G’s been a better all round player. But Malkin’s been so good that you’ll excuse him for not having more defensive zone starts than offensive.

Going into today’s games:
Malkin: 64.8% OZS, 0.236 Corsi Rel QoC, 3.28 P/60
Giroux: 47.6% OZS, 0.946 Corsi Rel QoC, 2.69 P/60
It’s a pretty big split.

The Flyers are playing the Pens, and Malkin is going to start ~70% of his faceoffs in the offensive zone. Who would you want matching up against him most frequently?

A 19-year old is going to be trusted to push play forward while getting defensive zone starts against an offensive superstar? I love Couturier, but there is not a fucking chance in hell of that happening now.

I’d rather not blow a game watching a 19-year old fail. In time, he will mature and develop and be able to handle such responsibilities a la Richards or Carter can now.
But for Couturier, now is not that time.
Editor at SB Nation's Philadelphia Union blog, The Brotherly Game. Follow me on Twitter.
I think you’re not giving Couturier any credit at all. He’s already been up against the top guys all season long as a defensive forward.
Broad Street Hockey's Reigning Trivia Champion
While I don’t agree with reaper. I disagree with that sentiment too. That’s exactly the sentiment that had people saying at the start of the year that an 18-year-old simply can’t handle defensive responsibilities in the NHL. That most of them get heavily sheltered and Couturier will fail if you put him on the PK.
Couturier proved all those sentiments wrong.

He has been impressive in the defensive role he has been put in, but to put him on defensive zone draws while Giroux is sheltered in the O-zone is setting him and the team up for failure.
Editor at SB Nation's Philadelphia Union blog, The Brotherly Game. Follow me on Twitter.
Yeah like I said I don’t agree with reaper. This team needs Giroux playing in the defensive zone for the good of the team. But I disagree that Couturier will necessarily be blasted away against some tougher competition. He may not be as impressive, but it won’t be as bad as you’re making it sound. He’s probably one of the most defensively capable rookies of the last decade.

Like Todd mentioned, he has faced mostly 3rd line competition this season.
To make the ump from that to Malkin at his age is not setting him or the Flyers up to succeed.

I’m not arguing we should actually match him up against the first line. It’s in no way the best thing for him or the team.
I’m just saying that I disagree with the sentiment that he can’t do something before we’ve seen him try. That doesn’t mean we should see him try. It just means we can’t guarantee he’d fail.

Interesting given our fears about how players will find the PHI organization
BILL WATERS: "WHEN YOU SIGNED THE LONG TERM EXTENSION, DID YOU HAVE A FEEL THAT THEY WERE SAYING, “HEY JACK, YOU’RE GONNA BE HERE FOR THE LENGTH OF THIS CONTRACT. OR AT NO TIME DID YOU FEEL THERE WAS ANY LONGEVITY PROMISED WHEN YOU GAVE THEM THAT EXTENSION?”
JJ "That’s exactly what they said when the deal was done, that “you’re gonna be here for a long time.” That was the intensions of both parties. We weren’t just signing it just to get it over with. We were doing it to agree to be together for a long time. That was the intension at the time." "I knew as the trade deadline got closer there was a lot of rumblings going on. No one said that “The rumors weren’t true” or anything from the Kings standpoint so I knew where there’s smoke, there’s usually fire."
BILL WATERS: "WHEN LOMBARDI TOLD YOU ABOUT THE DEAL, DID HE SAY “I’M SORRY ABOUT THE PROMISE I ALLUDED TO?”
JJ No. It was a very short, sweet conversation. It was, “We dealt you Columbus. Thanks. Bye.” Pretty short and sweet. There was really nothing that needed to be said.
Apologies for the all caps. JFTC (where I got the article from) decided to capitalize the Waters’ questions.

Carchidi tweeted something tonight about the Flyers being in on the Rick Nash offers just to ensure that the final going price is high. Also, he said that the Flyers aren’t interested but Columbus keep calling them.
So that’s a bit self-contradictory.

I’m no Carchidi fan, but actually that does make sense. Homer doesn’t want Nash, but he keeps answering Howson’s calls in order to keep negotiating so the Rangers pay more.
I can’t imagine any deal that allows Nash to get here before the deadline, even if Homer wanted him (which hopefully, he doesn’t: I voted to “get him off the phone” in the “trade Nash” fanpost thread poll).

Well, he’s the 172nd-best player of all time.
In all seriousness, though: .82 points/game for his career, one season leading the league in goals, one point-a-game season. He’s no doubt an elite first-line winger, but is it just the fact that he’s been “the guy” in Columbus for so long? Is it that people see how much he’s paid and assume he’s that good? I don’t get it. I guess maybe people think “if he can do that in Columbus, see what he can do elsewhere”, but I dunno.

Tracking the Flyers scoring chances at Broad Street Hockey
hey, Todd, I’ve been meaning to get a hold of you… I recently completed a baseball simulator and would love to do one with hockey. Problem is getting the stats needed to make it look reasonable. I know you do a great deal of work tracking zone entries and shots and things like that, but is anyone else doing this, so I could get info on all teams?
goldomatic, who is King in the art of wishful thinking
Geoff and someone from Japers are the only people tracking zone entries. As far as shots, the scoring chance project only records shots from within a certain area. I don’t know if that would be suitable for you, but I believe you can get x,y coordinates for shots from ESPN somehow through Gamecast or this Super Shot Search by theninjagreg might be useful.
Tracking the Flyers scoring chances at Broad Street Hockey
hmmm…. that’s what I was afraid of. The shot project does seems like a good starting point, along with TOI which I can get from boxscores. Problem with that is there’s no one single place where I can get all the data I need in one shot like I can with baseball (thanks retrosheet!) It’ll be interesting to see if the league starts tracking more data on this.
goldomatic, who is King in the art of wishful thinking
With scoring chances you’re probably only capturing about half of the total shots, if that. Derek Zona from Copper and Blue is head of the project so send him an email and he should be able to give you contact details for all the trackers. I’m sure I’ve read someone who did take all the shot information from Gamecast, I think it was Neil Greenberg from Russian Machine Never Breaks, but I can’t be sure.

Well last night’s Trenton Titans game was kind of interesting. Both goalies got called up to AHL teams (one to Charlotte, the other to the Phantoms) and weren’t going to be there. Same for a good portion of their normal players (like Danny Syvret’s little brother, who was called up to the Portland team).
Then a short while into the first period , the one called to the Phantoms ended up playing in the game. His flight from Philly to Rochester (where the Phantoms were playing) was delayed so he wouldn’t have gotten there in time. Rushed back to Trenton so he could play in goal for the Titans.
Madly in love with Jaromir Jagr's brilliant smile and epic goal salute.

Here’s a question: would we consider ceding the unbeaten streak if someone goes 36 games straight without a regulation or overtime loss?
Keeping alive the old Vaudeville joke, "I'd rather be dead than play Philadelphia."
Are you proposing that we treat shootouts, either win or lose, as ties for that purpose then? Because during our unbeaten streak there was no opportunity for anybody to ‘win’ once time expired, whereas there is now. Or would a shootout loss knock them out?

Look at the Flyers Corsi with Pronger versus the Flyers Corsi without Pronger.
There is your the root of your problem. Bryz is just a symptom of that problem.

No, it would make me happy for two guys who got a very unfair reputation because of a bunch of whiny bitches in the media (Panotch, Carchidi, etc.) and who were stupidly traded by the front office in an ill-advised re-build.
If that shames Snider and Homer, and forces a front office change, the Flyers will be better, Richards and Carter will be happy, and I’ll be content that better days for the Flyers will be here.

In my opinion, Snider forced Homer to trade Richards and Carter so they could sign Bryzgalov. That they chose Richards and Carter may or may not have had anything to do with the party photos.
I hate the trades. I hate the philosophy behind the trades. I hate where the trades put the Flyers in the long-term. Their offense is built for the future, but their defense and goaltending is built to win now. Carle is due for a raise. Several of the Flyers young forwards will be due for raises.
If I could go back and undo them, even knowing what I know now about Simmonds, Schenn, Couturier, and Voracek, I would undo them one hundred times over. There were better ways to get cap room (which they did not do) and to get better prospects (which they did do).
Editor at SB Nation's Philadelphia Union blog, The Brotherly Game. Follow me on Twitter.
OK see I disagree that the Richards trade had anything to do with Bryzgalov.
I also think that trades like these are perfect for the salary cap era. Entry level contracts are gold. If we can’t afford some of the raises, the worst case scenario is we trade players nearing-their-prime for more picks and prospects (while keeping the truly great players). Rinse and repeat, build a perennial winner.

This is probably more semantics than anything, but they had two elite players (Richards and Carter) with a budding superstar (Giroux).
Editor at SB Nation's Philadelphia Union blog, The Brotherly Game. Follow me on Twitter.
Here’s what I think. I think what really did Richards and Carter in was that they signed with a NTC that would come into play the season after they were traded.
In essence, if the Flyers did not move them when they did, they would be stuck with Richards and Carter for the rest of eternity.
For whatever reason – the Flyers decided that this was not what they wanted. I do not believe they underestimated what the two of them brought to the team. I do believe that they questioned something about them (attitude? locker room issues?) which made them feel that they did not want the Flyers to be Richards/Carter’s team for the next 10 years. So they quit and they quit with two very fair trades.
Bryz had very little to do with Richards being moved. It would’ve made more sense to salary dump Meszaros than trade your captain
