I love how we’ve slipped under the radar in all the post-deadline analyses. We made two moves which were relatively minor, plugged trouble-areas for the team, added a veteran presence for the playoffs and most importantly we didn’t give up any of our young forwards. Look at the recent cup champs; how many of them made a splash for a rental at the deadline that actually worked out? (so Kaberle doesn’t count).
Bravo Homer. Kubina may have been unnecessary, but overall I’m very happy with the way the deadline has played out.
Simon Gagne AND Mike Richards may move between towns, wear new jerseys and call different arenas home but, at the end of the day, they will both always be Philadelphia Flyers.
One day Sean Couturier will win the Conn Smythe. You heard it here first.

Actually a number of reviews, including Yahoo and USA Today’s, have specifically mentioned the Flyers as active or “winners” at the deadline.
I do agree that Kubina was possibiy unnecessary or at least an overpay. But Grossman appears to be a typical, almost Detroit-like, excellent deadline acquisition.
GMAT verbal section question, Philadelphia sports version.
In 2015, which one of the following will prove to be a better investment?
(a) Ilya Bryzgalov's contract (b) Ryan Howard's extension (c) Mike Vick's extension (d) Greek bonds from 2009 (e) Papelbon's bloat deal
I agree, serious contenders should probably only be making minor adjustments at the deadline, not huge trades. Huge trades are either a desperation move to get into the playoffs, or selling because you know you won’t make it. As you said, we made minor adjustments to fill a known hole, without giving up our young forwards. I’m happy with it. We’ll see how well it works.

I don’t get the overpayment agrument for Kubina. If Commodore is worth a 7th, John Scott a 5th, and Johnny Oduya a 2nd and 3rd then I tend to think that’s the price for a top 4 defenseman.
I’ve heard the overpayment thing several times now and in my opinion the overpayments are Oduya and Scott much more so than Kubina. Oduya has not improved much at all and was disposable by a team in right in the thick of a playoff run. Scott is quite possibly the worst hockey player ive ever seen in the NHL so I’ll leave that there.
Is it an overpayment because of what you think a defenseman is worth or what the market can realistically get you with so many teams in playoff contention?

+1 for kckrebs. I don’t get the whole overpayment argument either. Frankly, we needed someone like Kubina and that’s how much Kubina’s cost….This is also a good chance to audition him for next season. If Prongs is gone (and it seems like he may well be) and Kubina performs well, maybe Holmgren will re-up him.

Just curious, why did we need someone like Kubina?

We needed him because he’s a substantial upgrade on defense to MAB or Gus. It’s a substantial added bonus that he’s a physical, crease clearer who has a right handed shot that will likely help our PP.
by alaskalovestheflyers on Feb 28, 2012 3:41 PM EST up reply actions
This is going to be very argumentative, but I honestly want to know why people think the acquisition was needed.
What were MAB/Gus/Lilja doing so poorly that the Flyers needed to upgrade on them?
Is the physical crease clearer upgrade worth the downgrade in speed and stick skills when talking about the #6?
How does his being right handed actually help the Flyers? They haven’t had a full-time RH shot on defense since Jason Smith, and they’ve done just fine without one.
Kubina is getting 1:20 PPTOI/G so far this year, which is less than Timonen, Carle, and Meszaros. On a team that utilizes Voracek, Read, and JVR on the points, is he an upgrade on them?
Again, this isn’t meant to attack you, but I genuinely do not understand those who say the Flyers needed to acquire Kubina.

I’m not sure it shows up on the stats sheet, but watching grossman push Iginla away from the net last game (due to gamecenter screwing up i saw the same play like 15 times, got to analyze it) was a nice change from that Rangers game with the powerplay goals in close. I’m not sure how you quantify that, which is necessary on this site. Also, if it makes Bryz feel better, and gets him some confidence, it’s worth it.

I just want to be clear so as to avoid tangents: I’m not asking about Grossman or even the cost to acquire Kubina. I’m strictly trying to get at why some people feel acquiring Kubina was necessary at all.

Perhaps we’re forgetting that the Flyers are a business, and the expected return from Kubina might be additional playoff gate receipts, which is more than the expected return of the picks traded, therefore it was not overpayment. Obviously, i don’t know how the Flyers would figure this out (or even if they took it into account) but overpayment is a relative term.
Broad Street Hockey's Reigning Trivia Champion
It’s absolutely relative, but I’m pretty sure their playoff gate receipts didn’t move upon acquiring Kubina.

You can critizice Kubina as not being an UPGRADE over MAB and Gus, but then your criticism isn’t with the action of acquiring Kubina, it’s with choosing Kubina as the acquired player. Splitting hairs, but important if you don’t want to address the relative cost paid for a defenseman like Kubina (regardless of his comparative value versus the Phantoms players).
Maxime Talbot - in the Orange and Black ... better than chocolate and peanut butter!

This is a fair point. But you’re leaving out the simple fact that paying any cost for an asset – this being a #6 defenseman – you already posses 3 plus of (Lilja, Bourdon, Gus) is too much.
You don’t need to address the relative cost when your issue is with buying a 4th shitburger.

AH – I see. But Kubina isn’t really playing similar minutes to Gus or MAB is he?
Against Calgary, Kubina got 18:14 of ice, including over 4 minutes of special teams play.
Against Pittsburgh (where penaties were assessed to Cobie, Timonen, and Grossman), Bourdon saw 17:28 of ice, but only under a minute of special teams.
Against Buffalo (a blowout, BTW) Gus got 15:17 of ice, and one minute of special teams.
Not really the same minutes. Kubina is on our ‘third’ pairing which would be a second on most clubs with his inclusion.

I’ve been wondering the same, the year of the cup run, the #5/6 D was Krajicek and Parent. Why is Mez playing in the #5 spot this season, consistently, and the #4 spot is going to Bourdon? Is this an effort to limit the D-men’s minutes and can we expect that to change in the playoffs?

It seems like now Homer wants to continue that strategy of spreading his top 4 guys over 3 pairings and then bolstering those pairings with “better” partners, which leads us back to your original question.
On a tangent, which strategy seems better? The 09-10 seemed to get burned a lot when the matchups were blown. The strategy this year seems to be spread responsibility throughout the roster, maybe that (and a way younger forward corps) is causing the defensive numbers to slide, team wide.
by hebrew hammer on Feb 28, 2012 4:34 PM EST up reply actions
Puck moving defenseman are very valuable, and they show up well on the stat sheet, but I feel like sometimes you can have too many because if they don’t keep other forwards out of higher percentage shooting areas their corsi effect is somewhat deceiving. Not sure how you prove that with stats, and I’m not saying Kubina and Grossman are doing that, but watching that Rangers powerplay against us made me pine for a guy who will push people out of the crease.
Broad Street Hockey's Reigning Trivia Champion
Yea, in a way I was thinking the same lines, or at least trying to understand Homer’s thinking. Obviously the team sorely misses Pronger, but since comparable players are way too expensive, he seemed to go after certain aspects of Pronger’s skill set. The two replacement players seem to fit the bill somewhat in that they are touted as big bodies who are good at hitting (clearing the crease). Similarities that MAB and Gus weren’t really showing. I still don’t know if it was a necessary move, but I don’t think I’m ready to answer that.
by hebrew hammer on Feb 28, 2012 4:42 PM EST up reply actions
I think there’s value in diversifying your defense corps. And I think it’s naive to say “get six high Corsi guys” without clarifying to say “get 2 low Corsi against guys, 2 high Corsi for guys, and 2 elite two-way guys.”
You can also specify that your low Corsi against guys be strong with good balance. You can do all of this!

I’m not really disagreeing with anything you’re saying, I just felt like our defensive corps sorely lacked an intimidation factor recently.
Broad Street Hockey's Reigning Trivia Champion
The problem is, if MAB or Gus (our replaceable players) were being beaten because of their lack of intimidation skills we should be expecting that to show up in the Corsi numbers or scoring chances. That’s about where I start to get lost though. If I look at Kubina vs Bourdon’s Corsi numbers (which I haven’t), I still feel like its missing something because in both cases there are other players on the ice that affect those numbers. So this is where I have to ask for help.

No worries, I have to leave too. And even if we don’t mean Kubina specifically, I still don’t understand why an upgrade on D was necessary. I wrote a whole story on it. Further, I don’t see what it is that Kubina accomplishes.
If you want fewer goals against, Lilja does that better. If you want more goals for, Gus does that better. There’s nothing Kubina does better than the options in-house.

I don’t put much faith in giveaway rates at all, not least of which because every arena counts them differently. San Jose has 438 giveaways at home but only 166 on the road. Toronto has 516 giveaways at home but only 219 on the road. LA has 443 giveaways at home but only 174 on the road. With that drastic a difference, what value is there in the numbers?
Secondly, the following players are in the top-20 in giveaways: Carlson, Getzlaf, Thornton, Yandle, Karlsson, Phaneuf, Chara, and Doughty. What are we supposed to believe about giveaways when those guys are the worst at it?
But to answer: Bourdon has 25 in 39 games (0.64/g), Kubina has 21 in 55 games (0.38/g), Lilja has 13 in 33 games (0.39/g), and Gus has 8 in 18 games (0.44/g).

At the risk of killing the joke, the problem is that hits, giveaways, and takeaways are pure eye stats. There’s no definition of them, so whatever “looks like” a hit is a hit. They’re completely subjective.

Sort of, but not quite. That number is purely 5-on-5 play, so it doesn’t factor in short-handed goals and it accounts for ice time, normalizing for the sample sizes across players.

Comparing across teams lacks a sort of fairness, but I’m not sure why normalizing for ice time is unfair. I can see saying competition, teammates, zone starts, or a few others, but how else are we to compare guys who played 911 ES mins, 595, 406, and 272? Counting pure goals isn’t fair to Kubina.

I don’t say I have a better answer for you – merely that (as you note) the other factors all contribute into the GA/60 measurement with no definitive causality. I really don’t know how to compare defensemen adequately, other than simple numbers like ‘blocked shots per minute of ice time’ or ‘hits per minute of ice time’ … maybe rather than normalizing it over a given 60 minutes, it makes more sense (to me) looking at an average sample size and extrapolating over a typical shift for a given player, instead of the opposite.
Maxime Talbot - in the Orange and Black ... better than chocolate and peanut butter!
by MaximumTalbot on Feb 28, 2012 4:36 PM EST up reply actions
There will always be the debate over how to normalize. Some prefer to say “how good is he in his role” and others prefer “how much does he contribute to the team”.
In one, per minute makes sense. In the other, you don’t want to penalize the player who sees more ice time.
But I’d really like it if we can agree to throw out hits and blocked shots and giveaways until the NHL finds 30 people who can come to the definition of what one is.

OH – and doesn’t that GA/60 include Kubby’s time in TAMPA? How’s that possibly compare, considering how bad their goals-against as a team has been? We can only compare Kubby’s small sample in the few games he’s been in Philly – and even those are relative, because he’s still learning the system.

Of course it includes his time in Tampa. But his GA/60 is still 5th on TB and his on-ice sv% is 0.901, right in line with the rest of the Lightning.
It’s not a straight comparison, but he wasn’t helping Tampa keep pucks out of their own net, which is the point.

Is anyone else curious as to why the never ending idiocy that is Scott Howson decided to tell the world that Nash requested a trade?
Ed Snider is a crotchety old fuck.
That is all.
To be fair, Nash has a no movement clause, so the suspicion would have always been there and Howson would have always lost leverage on the basis of the restrictions that no movement clause places on him.
To be less fair, Howson’s probably the stupidest GM in the league. He goes and makes Nash the villain for two weeks before not trading him and keeping him as captain of the team. Way to make your team even more dysfuntional. And that’s just the beginning of his problems.

At this point though, you’d have to imagine that even Howson knows how dumb he’s been in making these deals. Good lord, they’re the worst team in the league, and he’s actually made moves that make the team even worse.
This is a rare instance that I feel bad for another team’s fans. It just keeps going from bad to worse, but hey, they have an All-Star game next year, so the League can see the rich hockey tradition(?) in….Columbus, Ohio………………………………………
Jagr shoots, Jagr scores!!!!!!
Agreed. The Jackets ownership seems pretty clueless. Maybe they are just going to let Howson finish out this lost season and then make a move. For their sake, they better. I wouldn’t trust that asshat to try and rebuild that team. Nor would I leave a potentially franchise crippling move like trading Nash in his hands.
Ed Snider is a crotchety old fuck.
That is all.
I wrote in the other thread that based on the press conferences and interviews Howson appears to be a standup guy, and seemingly would be somebody non-fans in ownership would respect. He appears totally ignorant about hockey talent, however, which one would think would be an important job skill for GMs!!

At this rate, would you begin to call it “tanking for draft picks”?

What I don’t get is that Columbus traded away their youth to us, for Carter, knowing full well they were going to suck this year too. and then they go ahead n trade Carter for an average D-man. seriously he can’t be all there.
unrelated sidenote question Do the links in the flyby all open in a new tab? my right button on my mousepad is dying, easier to just left click.
The Jackets thought they were going to compete for a playoff spot this year. And it wasn’t just them, most people thought they did well to acquire Carter, Prospal, and Wisniewski.
The links should open in a new tab, if Travis did it right.

Columbus really didn’t have a choice. They’ve been inconsequential for the majority of their existence. They needed to make a splash, so they traded their youth. If they continued with their youth movement, it was likely they were going to be moved.
Now it’s more likely they will be relocated

Not for some time though, I imagine. I think they’ll be relocating too, but Bettman will fight tooth and nail to make sure it doesn’t happen. Kinda like in Phoenix…I watched the city council meeting they had last year to determine whether or not to fork over the $25mil to keep the team and listening to the people talk, I’m damn near certain they were paid off by the NHL to vote to keep the team there.
The thing is with Columbus, since they get the All-Star game next year, the team will generate enough money to keep it in place for quite a couple more years, no matter how bad they are.

Wisniewski getting suspended for the first 8 games and Carter not being able to stay healthy, really hamstrung them. Momentum means a lot and maybe I’m dead wrong, but without the suspension, I don’t see them getting off to the horrible start that they did. Voracek and a 1st for a 26 yr old 35 plus goal scorer is not a bad trade. Things could have been a lot better for them.
by shawman35 on Feb 28, 2012 9:52 AM EST via mobile reply actions
It’s not a bad trade, but it was a lot to give up. They gave up a young, cost-controlled second line winger and a young player who might be able to play this year (Couturier was but one option, Dougie Hamilton another), as well as a third for a first line center.
From a strictly asset-level, I like what the Flyers got out of that. But Columbus was surely thinking beyond “Voracek and the 8th overall can help us more in the future”, so it’s tough to criticize too harshly.

Well looking at the Carter situation, Columbus got F’ed in the A. They basically traded Voracek, a 1st and 3rd rounder, and a lost 2012 season for Jack Johnson and a 1st. Suffice it to say that whoever Columbus uses it’s first rounder on, it’s not going to be a prospect as good a Scooter.
Carter is a great example of the problem in Columbus: No one wants to be anywhere near that team. The atmosphere never developed and the team has had 1 winning season. The saddest part is, you could argue that the most infamous moment in the franchise’s history is that they’re the reason we have safety netting.
Jagr shoots, Jagr scores!!!!!!
IMHO, you’ve hit the nail on the head.
“No one wants to be anywhere near that team.”
That’s the long and short of it. The GM revealing that the Captain wants out isn’t the problem. Oh that’s A problem…but not THE problem. Bottom line is that the franchise needs to move (don’t know where) and start over.

The NHL got 10.75 minutes on SportsCenter last week, with half of that going to the Red Wings. That’s less than the NFL or NASCAR got last week:
When they were doing the week’s top plays they showed a goalie making a save(I think it was Pavelec against us) & Steve Levy goes “And they say we don’t show hockey highlights on here”
Ignoring the fact that NASCAR has a deal with ESPN I don’t see how you can give it more air time then the NHL it’s the most boring “sport” out there

Not to mention the concentration it requires to drive between 150 and 190 for four hours with other cars right next you, right behind you, and where the slightest mistake in steering (missing your line) can mean the difference between life and death. Potentially for several other people at the same time.

I think ESPN in general, over the past couple years, has gravitated towards sensationalistic reporting, purely for ratings. ESPN refuses to promote any sport where they do not have a revenue generating interest. They’re not a journalism entity anymore, they’re a marketing firm. The NHL has no such marketing deal with them. They have to give hockey just enough press to keep saying they’re about sports, and to have NHL fans watch. Now that NBCSports is a competitor they’ll likely have to give hockey some more air to keep fans of hockey from leaving them entirely.

hahahaha. Yea, but i mean, as news organizations go they’re horrific. I understand most people who want to be in journalism have their “I want to tell other people what do,what is right, what is wrong” views, and I know some are better than others, but ESPN no longer has anything to do with sports. Do you think Tebow would have been a big deal if they hadn’t invested so much in him while he was in the SEC, who have a TV deal with ESPN? Would Jeremy Lin be as much of a story if he were in Charlotte NC? ESPN wouldn’t even know he exists.

Glad this trade didn't happen that Craig Custance suggested
3. Flyers forward James van Riemsdyk to the Stars for Steve Ott and a first-round pick — Ott is the kind of player who is made to play in Philadelphia and would instantly win over Flyers fans, plus the first-round pick would give GM Paul Holmgren some ammunition for a summer deal to add a defenseman to replace Chris Pronger. The Stars would be getting a big winger who would help fill the hole created by James Neal’s departure. Jamie Benn and van Riemsdyk would be a dynamic combo in Dallas.

That doesn’t sound bad to me at all, Ott is a douchebag but he’s the kind of douchebag that you’d love to have on your team. Great on faceoffs, very physical, contributes offensively, veteran guy, and the first round pick isn’t bad either. JVR has a lot of potential but if he doesn’t end up being at least a 30 goal scorer eventually I think we might look back on this deadline and wonder why we didn’t trade him.
That being said, I really do believe that next season when JVR is healthy (hopefully his apparent hip problem will be fixed and he won’t get a bad concussion), he’ll score 30-35 goals, so I’m pretty happy we didn’t make the trade.
Seems like every year people say next season will be the year JVR finally turns into the guy people think he is capable of being.

Not sure if that’s been said, but last year’s playoffs gave us a glimmer, and if he hadn’t been hurt I think it would have happened this season. I would say give it one more year, see what you have.

Is it too obvious to say..
That specialty teams are probably going to determine the outcome of the game tonight? Sharks 4th ranked PP against the Flyers 22nd ranked PK vs the Flyer 6th ranked PP against the Sharks 28th ranked PK (yes, even worse than us). It would seem our PK has to right the ship sooner or later and tonight would be a good time.
Today is definitely not as boring as yesterday...
But a whole lot more frustrating.
Went to go put my coffee down in the dining hall and it spilled all over my jacket.

Breaking news from Rotowire yesterday...
van Riemsdyk will require offseason hip surgery, according to the Newark Star-Ledger.
Spin: van Riemsdyk has missed time with a concussion this season, though the hip injury appears to be new news. Whatever the ailment, it’s not keeping van Riemsdyk off the ice.
Emphasis mine. I’m constantly amused that I know things about our players WELL before it shows up in ESPN/Rotowire’s news feed, thanks to you guys. :-p

Sweet Mother of God! I don’t blame Howson for asking for everything under the Sun. He had nothing to lose but damn. I think the reality is, and obviously I have the benefit of the deadline having passed but I really don’t think Nash was ever going to get moved because Howson had to ask for a Kings ransom and apparently he was asking for too much. Enough that it was prohibitive to most of the teams in the NHL. At least once the season ends there will be a lot more teams able and maybe willing to try and trade for Nash. A lot more time to work the roster so you can fit him both strategically and monetarily.

Some interesting nuggets in Friedman’s 30 thoughts this week.
13. Toronto and Philadelphia sniffed around Wild goaltender Josh Harding. Don’t think either team got overly serious and one GM thought Harding was a poor match for the run-and-gun Maple Leafs. “He needs structure to be successful,” the GM said.
Not overly surprising to hear what we all thought might’ve been true. Interesting to hear the thought that “he needs structure” and wouldn’t work in a run-n-gun system. Certainly no one’s said that about any Flyers goalie this year…
18. A lot of this surrounds the Kings captaincy, which appears headed for Mike Richards. This is a difficult play to make. Removing the “C” is a tricky, tricky proposition (see Trevor Linden, Mike Modano). One place where it’s worked? San Jose with Patrick Marleau. The Sharks did everything possible to make it as easy as possible on him. Sharks GM Doug Wilson and head coach Todd McLellan had a long-time relationships with Marleau, too. In the short term, Brown wasn’t happy no one told him what was going on.
Didn’t they learn that Ri_hards couldn’t handle the captaincy?!?!?!?!?

It’s not necessarily hipster-only. Often it starts with an insider crowd but not always.
Some from the 70s and early 80s.
“Dyn-O-Mite” in Good Times was a meme.
“AAAAYYYY” by the Fonz was a meme.
Farah Fawcett hair.
“Are you talkin’ to me?”
How many things have been shared, imitated and re-shaped from the Godfather films.
Or all those skits from Saturday Night Live that made their way into the language of the country.
Sometimes memes become larger representative symbols, rather than just items of shared social currency. Whatever that means.

To me he comes off as somewhat socially awkward and someone who doesn’t love camera’s up in his face. I think there were some writers who didn’t like the way Richie spoke to them, and while he was short and dismissive in his tone I don’t think he meant anything by it, I just think it’s how he dealt with it. Those writers then took that tone and decided to have an agenda against the guy. Some of which went so far as to call for his Captaincy.
Ed Snider is a crotchety old fuck.

I also think some people mistook him being a socialite for someone who is comfortable in front of the media and made the incorrect assumption that if he is comfortable going out and getting blasted with his friends at the bars and clubs then there is no reason he can’t be social with the media. Personally, I could give a flip what he does off the ice so long as it doesn’t effect what he does on the ice. And I would think most fans are in the same thought process there.
