From that Jagr interview - very interesting snippet
I think that we have a very good bunch of guys, probably one of the best I’ve played with. The CBA agreement between NHL and NHLPA will come to an end and it’s not certain if the league will continue or not but I hope that it will. That’s why it’s too early to speak about my contract extension. There will be new rules for signing and there’s no hurry then.
Now, I’m not sure, but didn’t DragonGirl say that the current CBA expires in September and therefore this offseason’s free agency will be under the rules of the current CBA? In that case, will any new rules for signing affect the Flyers’ negotiations with Jagr? I do agree that it is too early to work out Jagr’s extension, but it seems very odd that the two parties must have discussed the new CBA and considered that a suitable reason to delay negotiations. Obviously they know what’s going on behind the scenes better than we do…
But if the new CBA is going to make a big difference in some way (removal of LTIR exemption? cap-free buyouts? something completely different?) why then did the Flyers opt to re-sign Coburn?
I’m just very confused as to what potential change they might be referring to here.
Simon Gagne AND Mike Richards may move between towns, wear new jerseys and call different arenas home but, at the end of the day, they will both always be Philadelphia Flyers.
One day Sean Couturier will win the Conn Smythe. You heard it here first.

What drives Jagr?
Maybe it’s because I am old — but the reflections he shared in the Czech interview hit home. Sure, he winks and says the kids make him feel young. But he also credits this group as being one of the best in his personal history. So my takeaway is very optimistic: if JJ can push, prod and poke the kids to pay attention and amp their games, why can’t we make the finals? And when we do, everyone can look back and credit Jagr’s motivating influence.

Free agency does start July 1st, so nothing should prevent them from signing a UFA. The thing is, whenever the new contract goes into effect, there will probably be some period of time where teams need to make adjustments to become compliant to the new rules.
If you have a UFA who legitimately doesn’t want to go anywhere, both sides can wait it out in good faith and watch how negotiations go rather than sign a contract and have to make that contract compliant later. For example, if Jagr signs on July 1st, he’d be affected if the whole league takes a salary rollback like last time. If he signs after the rollback takes place for everybody else, his contract wouldn’t get rolled back.
If the Flyers had opted not to re-sign Coburn and let him go UFA and wait out the agreement, there’s no guarantee that he wouldn’t get an offer from another team. Big difference between the two guys being asked to wait it out in good faith and not sign a contract somewhere else; when one is up for his big UFA payday and the other has already had a long successful career.

I should add that I see us as one of the teams who will have the most trouble becoming compliant with the new CBA, depending on what actually changes (although having contributors who are on ELCs right now is going to help us next year). I think maybe we’ve become desensitized to it because we’re always up against the cap; but over the past year, maybe year and a half, I feel that I’ve been watching us get pressed more and more firmly against the wall. I want to be optimistic, but I have to take it one day at a time and see what decisions Homer makes between now and the end of this agreement.

Thanks for that. That makes a lot of sense. And seeing as Voracek is RFA I guess it’s a potential possibility that we qualify him but wait for the new CBA to sign him as well. That way Svoboda and Homer can develop the understanding that negotiations for both his clients will occur under the new rules.
I am a little concerned for Jags. Let’s say a lot of other teams that aren’t so close to the cap decide they’ll jump on the UFAs on July 1 and fill out their roster before the new CBA. Then imagine for whatever reason that the Flyers suffer in the new CBA and need to cut back on contracts. If they then go to Jags and say “sorry, we can’t sign you now” then he’ll be left facing a Vokoun-esque salary.

I wonder if it matters when Voracek signs, though. I think he has to be tendered an offer early on in the offseason, so it will be known what his salary will be long before the new CBA is worked out. idk. I’d need to be smarter than a Philadelphia lawyer to sort it out.
As for Jagr, I said in a previous post that he may have to come to camp next season on a PTO until we get to Day 2 of the season. Once everyone is on LTIR that need be, then we would have room under the cap for him, with a deal that was worked out in advance. This may be a factor in Voracek’s negotiations too.
I somehow forgot about the details of the salary rollback last time, so, DG, if you’re so willing, please refresh my memory.

I can quote directly from the CBA for this one; from Exhibit 16, which details everything the teams had to do to become compliant:
1. Across-the-Board 24 Percent Salary and Bonus Reductions.
a. Upon execution of this Agreement, all Player Salaries and Bonuses, including without limitation, Signing Bonuses, Performance Bonuses, Roster Bonuses, Reporting Bonuses, minimum compensation guarantees, relocat ion and other payments related to trades, payments in respect of the nonexercise of options, and any market ing and appearance fees, and any and all other payment obligations contained in Players’ SPCs and addenda, including without limitation, payments that may historically have been included in Average League Salary calculat ions, due in every League Year (including any option years), for all SPCs existing prior to the execution of this Agreement, shall be reduced by 24 percent (the “24 percent rollback”). Any potential salary revisions shall be subject to the 24 percent rollback.

An extra link
Ten Minute Misconduct on Jeff Carter rumor construction. I found it interesting. The gist of it is blockquoted below, but read the full article for the process:
So, folks, it seems to be a pretty open & shut case, with too much synergy and too many coincidences to ignore. Jeff Carter & Curtis Sanford are going to L.A., in exchange for Jack Johnson and Jonathan Bernier, in a deal that will likely go down after tonight’s game.
See how easy it is? By taking a few "facts" — which are really nothing more than educated guesses by others, mixing them with some true facts and some facially reasonable inferences, we have created an entirely reasonable, trade scenario whose desireability is almost undeniable. The only problem is — I can’t point to a single factual basis to indicate that it is actually going to happen.
That’s how it’s done, and it’s frustrating as hell to keep hearing of this deal and that deal, with anticipation and reality alternately elevating and dashing hopes. Eventually, we all have to stop watching Twitter and get back to work. So twirl this one around in your psyches as the Blue Jackets take on the Kings.
I, for one, would put money on Jeff Carter not being traded this deadline. Not much money, but maybe a little bit.

Thanks for this. I was going to make this point earlier today but life intruded. The debate about whether a person should be able to use illegal streams if legal streams aren’t reasonably available is off to the side of SOPA. being obnoxious and self righteous while ignoring the point since 9/29/11
I think as a team overall they have been suffering from what is either very slow or completely lack of decision making. By that I mean they get a puck, and have no idea what they can/are going to do with it, almost like they expect time to gather the puck, take a look around, and then make a pass or skate. It’s especially bad in the defensive end some nights, by the D and the forwards as well, and it’s very noticeable against teams with a fast or very aggressive forecheck. Anyone can feel free to tell me I’m wrong, just an eye thing.

If they really did that in the commercial, got a bunch of people together and surprised the two teams, that’s incredibly awesome. For some reason I have trouble convincing myself that it isn’t just a staged game and crowd like any other commercial. Probably because the game footage and camera angles look exactly like any other commercial. But the quotes from the players afterwards are what make it. That had to be incredible for them.

I’m just saying if I saw it on TV without reading the article first it might not have caught my attention as something special.

Louis Helmburg III of Marshall University is suing the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity and fraternity member Travis Hughes, claiming he suffered injuries at a party in 2011 after the allegedly drunken Hughes attempted to fire a bottle rocket from his anus, Courthouse News Service reported Thursday.

I did plenty of dumb things with the guys I lived with junior and senior years, but those were things like taking slap shots with hard boiled eggs off of our balcony into the parking lot, having can-stomping races at 2:00 AM, or having sub-woofer competitions at an equally inhuman hour. But I very rarely drank enough to get drunk much more than a pleasant buzz, so it never got much beyond silly stuff like that.

You see this Hintzy?
As previously announced, the ACC will play an 18-game conference schedule beginning in 2012-13.
When Pitt and Syracuse join, each school will have one primary partner (Boston College and Syracuse; Clemson and Georgia Tech; Duke and North Carolina; Florida State and Miami; Maryland and Pitt; NC State and Wake Forest; Virginia and Virginia Tech).
The scheduling model will be based on a three-year cycle during which teams will play every league opponent at least once with the primary partners playing home and away annually while the other 12 rotate in groups of four: one year both home and away; one year at home only; and one year away only. Over the course of the three-year cycle primary partners play a total of six times and all other conference opponents play four times.

Actually the campuses aren’t that far apart compared to the rest of the new ACC. I think that was the reason for the pairing.
"Call me dumb, call me stupid, whatever. I block shots."

Yeah, I know they’re fairly close (I lived in Takoma Park, MD for two years). But all of the others (except maybe Clemson/GaTech — I don’t know about them) are actual major rivalries.
@BSH_EricT
Writer at Broad Street Hockey
I don’t know if BC and Syracuse really care about each other, or Clemson and GT, but the rest are pre-existing rivalries. However, the existing rivalries are due to geographical proximity, so it still works out the same way.

Of course, that page lists about 800 rivalries for Big East football teams, so I’m not sure “major rivalry” is a fair description of it (Syracuse-Georgetown would be my go-to choice). But at least there’s a long conference history there. /shrug
@BSH_EricT
Writer at Broad Street Hockey
All of the pairings listed there are for geographical reasons, with the exception of Duke/UNC/NCSU, who are all next to each other. In that case, NCSU is the one left over, so they get paired with Wake.
As for MD-Pitt, I honestly don’t mind it, but that’s because my father-in-law is a Pitt alum. But most other people don’t have an in-family connection like that, so many of my MD friends are pretty upset about this on facebook today.
But truthfully, the whole thing just makes me miss the old 9-team ACC more and more. The double round robin format was the best, and it’s gone forever.

Tell your Maryland friends to suck it up. They haven’t been relevant since that one time that really good guard led them to a title (Jamie something? I want to say Jamie Dixon, but he’s our coach…).
They don’t get to be upset about a perennial top-3 seed in the tournament being their rival.

Yeah, that’s where the conversations have ended up. When our program peaked, and we were a legit threat to Duke, that’s when the matchup was relevant. Since then, it doesn’t matter except for MD fans remembering the good times a decade ago. Duke never cared about us, UNC is the one they hate.
And I absolutely loved Juan Dixon, but I feel it’s a crime to not mention Steve Blake, Lonny Baxter, or Chris Wilcox on that championship team. It was the “perfect storm” of having an incredible point guard, incredible shooting guard, and strong forwards all come together at the same time.

They’re just bitter because our new “rival” is a team we’ve only played 3 times, ever. It’s along the same lines as the arguments over the NHL realignment, familiarity breeds contempt. And we’re being told our rival is some team we know nothing about, in place of any of the teams we’ve grown to hate over all these years.

Tell me about it. I’ve picked Pitt to go far in brackets several times and you’ve always let me down. I like your coach a lot, so I want you to do well, but it’s never happened. Oh well, now you’re my “rival”, so go to hell!
Incidentally, I also always pick Duke to go out in the 2nd Round or Sweet 16 (I’d love to put them out in the 1st Round, but I know better), and they have often happily obliged when most people have them going further.

So the guy goes 4-1 with a 1.7 GAA and ~.933 Sv% in his last 5 starts…. and there’s almost no mention of it….. with only the loss against Boston giving up more than one goal….

I’m observing a basic lack of recognition, in general. The guy has a bad night, and folks are jumping all over him. The guy strings together two weeks of solid…. and there’s nary a whisper.
"Ocean: A body of water covering 2/3 of a world MADE for man....who has no gills."
I think this is probably a result of the order of events and corresponding confirmation bias.
If he’d had a great first half of the season, everyone would’ve been talking about what a great acquisition he was and a rough patch would’ve been overlooked or excused. But he had a terrible first half of the season, so the benefit of the doubt went the other way, and now it’s the good stretches that get overlooked or excused.
I guess my opinion is that people form an opinion in the first month or two and then it takes a month or two of things going the other way to get them to change their minds, and they aren’t going to talk much about a week or two that goes against their already-formed opinion.

Just yesterday Geoff posted a link to an article saying that Tuesday’s win was a “good first step” for Bryz, so that would seem to acknowledge his recent improvement. And in the recap of last night’s game, everybodyhitswoohoo said:
Bryz with a 1.74 GAA and a .938 save % over his last five games. Progress. One more strong game away from being back at .900 WOOOOOOOOOO.Those are just two examples, but I’d say it’s been noticed and acknowledged. On the other hand, there are also people who still gave Bryz shit for his play last night and Tuesday against Winnipeg, saying that he still sucks despite the low GA and good SV%. So there are people on both sides of the fence, those that think he’s doing better as of late, and those who aren’t convinced.

Well, that kind of comment isn’t too out of the ordinary for me. I make an effort to praise and/or criticize both goalies when I feel like they deserve it. Obviously, Bob has garnered (and completely deserved) a higher percentage of the praise for the year, but yeah, as a whole things seem disproportionately slanted in his favor.
