Game 51, Discussion Thread: New Jersey Devils at Philadelphia Flyers
New Jersey Devils at Philadelphia Flyers, Feb 4, 2012 1:00 PM EST
Apparently nobody had preview duty today. So here's a very haphazard Game Thread thing. The inmates are running the asylum today!
Devils roll into the Wells Fargo Center today for a little Saturday Matinee hockey. Should be a good one. Matt Read and Sean Couturier are on fire. Ilya Kovalchuk is pretty hot too. Wayne Simmonds normally has a good game against the Devils. Coatsey's mic is giving feedback and fuzz. It's all shaping up to be a good game.
Questions to answer
1. Claude Giroux scored at the end of the last game. Did that open the flood gates?
2. How about Jagr? Will his karma catch up to him and provide him with some scoring?
3. Remember last year when the Devils were terrible for awhile? Wasn't that awesome?
GO FLYERS!

Mr. Corsi Fenwick, you confuse the hell outta me.
Shaun, it didn’t mess you up that I clicked on the draft while you were writing it, did it? It immediately gave me an alert that you were already editing it and I backed out; but I wanted to make sure that didn’t break anything.

I’m confused. Was that saying that the Flyers need to be careful of the Devils when the Flyers have the PP? Meaning the Devils lead in SHG?

Technical question for all of you
On the PP goal, it looked to me like Mez lined up slightly too far to the right, worried about a man who would have no angle on the shot, and not worried about the man directly in front, who shot on Bob for the score.
Am I nitpicking here, given that I’m as anti-Mez as the yahoos who are anti-Carle, or was it really mediocre positioning given that it was a 5-on-3?

Well, by the end of 3rd, the Heat started pulling away so the non calls lost their impact on the outcome and it became an issue of principle. But during the tightly contested first half, the Heat were given well beyond the expected star treatment enough to have inexcusably effected the game if it remained close.

"I got a crosscheck to the face and lost a bunch of teeth. You battle through it. That’s the way hockey players are made." - Claude Giroux
The most egregious one was Claude Giroux getting blatantly and obviously tripped on the PP, leading to a Devils 2-on-1 and a New Jersey shot. It went uncalled, but it was fucking obvious, yo.

Even though it’s an afternoon game and it’s slow; I almost feel like we need a new thread at the beginning of the second period for a fresh start…

I think that could be the first ever South Pacific reference on BSH.

First shift after intermission send of the 4th line and give exact orders to Shelly to straight up over skate on a check and plant one of the officials into the glass.
My teams are the Flyers, Phillies and the Steelers. Deal with it.
Meh
This is why people don’t take this sport seriously. It’s behind the NBA in revenue because the league doesn’t produce a finished product. Guarding against concussions while allowing fights, letting referees decide how they want to call a game at their own discretion. This sport is not ready for a primetime spotlight. If you had more eyes on this kind of thing, it would be a media disaster. Think about the officiating in just that first period applied to an NFL game. That story would play on ESPN for a calendar year.
Every sport has this though. Refs decide what’s traveling (apparently nothing), holding, pass interference. It’s not just hockey.

There is not a person on this planet that would not have thought the officiating in that period was criminal.
And I say criminal because I would be listening to Mike and Mike talk about it for 4 hours this monday if Hockey was relevant.
by RealSantaClaude on Feb 4, 2012 1:55 PM EST up reply actions
And whats worse
is that this is not that rare in hockey. About 30 percent of games are decided by officials. It’s the reason soccer and hockey will always be a niche sport.

Lol, and where did you get that statistic from?

Fair enough lol. All I know right now is that 100% of the games I’m currently watching are decided by the refs, and that they also account for 100% of my needless daydrinking this afternoon.

1) Where did I say that this game wasn’t awfully officiated?
2) I’m saying that there are judgement calls in every sport.
3) You made that up.
4) The world’s most popular sport will never be niche.

I don’t have a problem with the “one questionable call leads to the victory for one team over the other” but when blatant missed calls over the course of a game go only one way then it becomes a team vs the officials rather than a team vs a team

To serve as a bit of a distraction to myself, I ask you all what are some good first/valentine’s day date ideas for a high school senior?
Take her ice skating…then if she falls you can help her up and look really caring and all that romantci stuff. She might wind up holding on to you and that’s all good!
The nearest rink is like 45 minutes away, but that’s a nice idea. One of the bad parts about living in Florida
Bowling is good and all but skating almost forces physical contact. Try the old “when she falls fall with her and wind up lying on the ice together” trick!
plus the refs don’t suck in bowling, which is why it isn’t a niche sport.

Sixers game last night was an embarrassment for the NBA. That ref who wrote the book a few years ago about officials fixing games was absolutely validated by that miserable showing.
