So I was watching DNL yesterday while making dinner, which I normally never do(DNL, not dinner) and I am glad I did see it because Timmy P got absolutely owned by Smallwood whom I find to be a relentless douche and some other guy whose name is escaping me but isn’t that bad. Might have been Donnellon. Anyway, it was kind of funny to see Tim get smacked around by these guys. Some of the things he was saying were just ridiculous.

Yeah, amazing when Donnellon and Smallwood are the rational ones.

Heading up to Philly today for the annual Latvian Night at the Flyers game. We’ve got a brief player meeting arranged after the game, but not sure who it will be. My youngest son is hoping it’s Jody Shelley so he can wish him a Happy Birthday!

I love the ESPN/Deadspin article as always. It’s one of my new favorite weekly articles. I hope Briere plays tonight!

I also woke up earlier just so I can read BSH cause I’ve missed reading the FlyBy since I started working a “real job.”

If I’m not around tonight, GO FLYERS!

Don't get me wrong, I love Cooter as much as the next guy...

But if Nashville acquires Carter I’ll be so angry. I’ll just spend the next four months thinking about how had we not traded him we could have used him to acquire Weber or Suter…Of course if we didn’t trade him he could have taken Richie’s spot and we’d still have a team that doesn’t quite fit together with the extra center, but still. That’s a pretty deep rabbit hole. I’m just going to think of how we could have used him to acquire Suter/Weber.

Carter is not going to yield Weber or Suter especially after his current season. CLB is going to get less than what they gave up for him not more.

He does have 27 points in 30 games, and had we kept him he wouldn’t have the whole unhappy vibe, and it’s Philly and Nashville….I think he’d be a good piece had things not turned out how they had. I don’t think he’s enough alone for Weber at all though.

Going to the game tonight and for the first time in a long time really could care less. If it wasn’t for the fact that I’ll never be able to get rid of my tickets, I wouldn’t even bother going.

Amazing when they win 2 in a row people beg to buy my seats but when they are anally raped in back to back games I can’t give them away.

by CoburnsCuddleBuddy on Feb 7, 2012 10:37 AM EST up reply actions

I definitely understand the “don’t do anything stupid” feeling, but I think I’d still love to go. It’s partly driven by the fact that I live 3 hours away now and very rarely get to see the Flyers play, let alone see them in person. I went to games regularly from when I was 5 until I left for college, so I miss it like crazy. I don’t remember going to games ever feeling like a chore (including the early 90s when we were bad), but I was also a kid, so I was entirely caught up in the thrill of the game and I wasn’t the one paying for the tickets. I will admit, it’s getting harder for me to pay for my Maryland football season tickets since they’re so awful, but I’ll probably keep doing it as long as I have my friends to tailgate with. But the Flyers aren’t anywhere near as bad as Maryland football. This is only two bad games we’re talking about. Maryland was downright embarrassing every single week. Who knows how this season will turn out, but the Flyers are still a respectable team and still fun to watch. And I love hockey far more than football. So yeah, if I could go, I’d be there.

I’ve gone to the LA game and the TB game. The LA game we were surrounded by hardasses and people who booed Mike Richards every time (that wasn’t a treat, at all)

The TB game we faired a bit better at. For some reason people don’t get etiquette. You get up after the whistle, not during the game

I was down by the glass waiting for the players to come out (I ended up giving my spot up so that I young girl and her father could get a closer look at the players, etc), and I spotted quite a few interesting people, who were borderline infatuated with the players potentially coming out (along the lines of ignoring their girlfriends, or being downright creepy in their Robert De Niro like fandom.

Once I saw Superfan I decided that going to games really wasn’t for me. Once I saw numerous Jody Shelley Winter Classic jerseys, I really knew going to the games wasn’t for me lol

In San Jose, the ushers enforce this rule. They won’t let people into the seating area until a whistle, and people leaving the seating area during play are told that they should have waited.

I always end up near a big group of college kids who are trashed and so loud I can’t hear the band. Actually, that’s not true, once it was a middle-aged drunk woman yammering away at her silent (and obviously embarrassed) husband for three hours. Maybe I just have shitty luck.

Okay, so this isn’t a problem for groups like Green Day, they’re pretty loud. But for quieter acts like Mumford & Sons or Brandi Carlile, it sucks.

That makes me sad. It was never a problem as far as I remember as a kid, and I was taught to wait for the whistle. It irritates me that people at Caps games don’t show that courtesy. The ushers hold up little stop signs at the entrances until there is a stoppage in play, but people just shove past them. I thought Flyers fans were better. Maybe times have just changed.

For some reason people don’t get etiquette.

I’m glad to see I’m not alone with this line of thought regarding fan behavior. Locally, the exit/ re-enter etiquette is basically understood and followed by the majority. But I’m still bewildered that fans will pay good money for seats, then leave after the second or even first period, especially when we’re leading, although I suppose they may be sneaking down somewhere. Almost every game I’ve attended had people nearby who paid little if any attention at all to the game and were quite distracting with their banter. I keep thinking, “Why are you here? Why did you pay good money for seats to an event about which you seem to care so little?”

Yeah, that’s my big problem. Granted, it’s the Islanders, but they have played preseason games there before (in an attempt to scare Nassau County into giving them money) and not done well. That’s worrisome.

well, a bookie can set it at 4. the only reason they do .5 is because it’s either win or lose. a win and they lose money, a loss when they win money. A push is no money transfer at all, which is a waste of the bookie’s time

A “trifecta” is a bet where you correctly pick the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place horses, in order. Dick Vitale uses it as a synonym for a three-pointer. Between his absurd catch phrases, annoying voice, and overt love for Duke, I can’t stand that man.

I’m not sure I agree with that slump-breaking article. The first few examples hadn’t scored in ~2 weeks, a span which included the All-Star break. There could also be injures included in the span of the slump, it isn’t clear if that is accounted for. And how often is it reasonable to expect a goal for most players? The season is 26 weeks, right? Last year, 48 players had 26 goals or more, so that’s only about 2 players per team who would have a goal-per-week rate or better. (Yes, I know that was absurdly coarse and back-of-the-envelope calculation, but it’s a starting point.) Yes, some players do go through really long stretches without scoring a goal, but I feel like shorter ones, on the order of what are talked about in the article, are fairly routine. (I don’t know if there’s any easy way to determine this.) But the thing that really kills it for me is that there is no corresponding record of slump-breaking goals against other teams. Does it really happen more often against the Flyers than anyone else? The article claims it does, but doesn’t offer anything to support it. I’d be amazed if this sort of thing were tracked, but it’d be interesting to see if you made a list of all the extended slumps (maybe set the threshhold at 10 games?) and see who they scored the slump-breaking goal against. As it stands, that article just sounds like a rant resulting from a weekend of bad hockey to me.

Through various injuries and generally bad behavior, Carter has significantly depreciated his value and played his way out of Columbus.

(Emphasis mine)
What is this “generally bad behavior” of which the writer speaks? I would agree that his value has depreciated, but it’s due to injury, rather than having “played his way out of Columbus”.

And why is the sky falling in Chicago if Emery becomes the Hawks’ starter? He’s a very good goalie whom I wish we brought back late last year, even if it was only to play in ADK. Goalie contracts? You wanna talk about goalie contracts? Are you kidding me? Contracts?

OT: I have a new-found fondness for this Maria Menounos gal today. Yowzah!

by mtitanic on Feb 7, 2012 1:04 PM EST reply actions

I honestly don’t understand why the sky is falling in Chicago if Emery becomes the starter. I don’t get it at all. I can understand hesitation due to Crawford’s 3 year deal, but the quotes in there are talking about on-ice play and how Emery can’t move laterally or see through traffic. I have only seen him twice this year, but if your goalie can’t go post to post or see through traffic, he’s not in the NHL.

I’ve seen him maybe half a dozen times this year. His lateral mobility and recovery is noticeably bad and much worse than what I saw in Anaheim or here. It was bad enough to make me think he wasn’t going to stick around much longer. Very sad.

When I saw that, I went and looked at his PK save percentage… it’s not only better than Corey Crawford’s, it’s 0.907, which is quite high. There’s obviously small sample size there, but the two – bad lateral mobility, very good PK Sv% – don’t mesh with me.
