Flyers vs. Maple Leafs preview: In which Jason Bacashihua is your backup goalie
Wait, are you trying to tell me that the Toronto Maple Leafs are in the playoff hunt? Those same Maple Leafs that haven't been to the playoffs since Jeremy Roenick dispatched them from the 2004 Eastern Conference Semifinals? They're like, a relevant team in the Eastern Conference again? Man, that's weird.

7 p.m. tonight at Wells Fargo Center in South Philly
TV: CSN Philly, TSN, NHL Network | Radio: 94 WIP [feed]
Probably Gonna Get Shot In Detroit: Pension Plan Puppets
Tickets: Starting at $23, 100 level from $28

But it's true. Suddenly, the Leafs are right in the thick of things in the East, and they're just five points back of the Flyers in the standings, although the orange and black do have one game in hand over them. With a win tonight at the Wells Fargo Center, they could jump up even closer to the Flyers. How likely is that?
From the Flyers perspective, they should theoretically win the game if they put in the same kind of performance as they did against the Islanders on Tuesday night -- tons of possession, strong in the corners on the offensive end, good power play, great effort by the top line. Having an opposing goalie that doesn't play like he's the second coming of Jesus would be nice, too, but I'm willing to bet lightning doesn't strike twice in that regard. Well, let's hope not.
James Reimer is in goal tonight for the Leafs, and it'll apparently be Sergei Bobrovsky in goal for the Flyers, since Ilya Bryzgalov is a little bit ill. There's been some confusion on Twitter this morning regarding the goalie situation tonight, with several people asking about the waiver status of the goalies with the Adirondack Phantoms.
The Phantoms are in Voorhees today, a pit stop on their way to Norfolk, Va. for the weekend, so a last minute call up isn't much of an issue in terms of logistics. Waiver status doesn't necessarily matter, either, thanks to the emergency recall provision in the CBA. (For the record, Michael Leighton is subject to both regular waivers and re-entry waivers, while Jason Bacashihua is subject to regular waivers but exempt from re-entry.)
That's why you get this news this afternoon:
#Flyers have recalled goaltender Jason Bacashihua from the Adirondack Phantoms on emergency conditions, according to GM Paul Holmgren
— Philadelphia Flyers (@NHLFlyers) February 9, 2012
Jason Bacashihua is our backup goalie tonight, then. Prepare yourself accordingly.
Other lineup news: The Daily News put the thought out there that James van Riemsdyk could return tonight -- not based on any inside knowledge or anything, but based on the speculation that the demotion of Harry Zolnierczyk was to clear space for Reemer on the 23-man roster -- but Paul Holmgren announced after practice that JvR is not ready to go.
That leads us to believe things will be exactly the same in terms of the lineup this evening. Jody Shelley and Andreas Lilja will be the healthy scratches yet again.
For more on tonight's game, check in with our buddies over at Pension Plan Puppets. Our game thread will be up at 5 p.m., and you can catch the action on CSN Philly in the Delaware Valley, NHL Network across the U.S., and TSN in Canada.

I kinda want to turn the video into an animated gif. But that means I’d have to add text to the individual frames. That sounds like a lot of work. Hmm.

Anyone else tired of the Flyers/NHL playing off the Schenn brothers for dramatic effect? Headline at the flyers website is “Battle of the Schenns!!” What are they gonna do if Luke gets traded?
Its a hockey, you know. Eh, its only… its only game. Why you heff to be mad?

I was going to ask if you actually referenced the spreadsheet when you wrote this, Travis, but then I realized my re-entry waiver article from September came up on the right sidebar and we’ve talked about this enough times that you probably just remembered Bacashihua’s status because I’ve repeated it so often.

Yes, but as Geoff checked earlier, we have plenty of LTIR room right now. Cash takes up less than Harry Z was using

The Bacawhatshisname thing really caught me...
I hadn’t been paying attention AT ALL today (too damn busy with work & meetings) so I see “Jason Baca… is your backup goalie, and I saw the caption-contest picture of Bob and I’m like ’THEY TRADED BOB?!?!?!” in sort of a WTF mode very much like last June.
So thankfully it’s just Bryz with a mystery illness, which we hope is not a knee virus.
Can we call Jason ’Bacco or something? Short for tobacco, not that he is likely to smoke. Maybe he chews – Chewbaca was too obvious and got me to ’Bacco.
His nickname is “Cash”, so I like Shaun’s suggestion of some derivation on The Man in Black.

Yes! I actually get to watch this game! It’s being shown on delay at 9 tonight local time! Unfortunately, that comes out to 3 AM Philly time. I guess I’ll have to avoid the internet for the rest of day to avoid spoilers. Oh well.

Effort will be questioned.

We should trade Briere while we still can’t.

In other news
The NHL has finished their investigation of the CBJ-LA Kings game last week. Their conclusion is that the LA clock did indeed see its shadow. This means that there will be six more weeks of meaningless hockey for Columbus and at the end of that time their season will have become irrelevant as well.

Anybody else find it interesting how they announced our Winter Classic in August but they announce the one for 2013 11 months ahead of time?

Probably to be used in CBA negotiations. How can they wash out a season when this humangous big game could be on the line.

I can’t take credit for the idea. They were just as puzzled on HNIC and the Hockey Central shows I listen to on Sirius today and a couple people tossed this out as a reason for the league rolling it out there now. It makes sense when you are the type of person who believes nothing is coincidental, which I am.

Hang on…so the league and its owners decided to make the announcement now, and they’re going to use it as leverage in CBA negotiations, even though they stand to lose far, far more by not playing it than the players do? Or am I missing something entirely?
by everybodyhitswoohoo on Feb 9, 2012 4:59 PM EST up reply actions
They can use it to make the NHLPA look like the bad guy. “Look! We had plans for next season! This is your fault we have to cancel the WC!” Get the public on the side of the league. Similar to calling the NHLPA’s rejection of the realignment “unreasonable”, it’s a PR game.

This is why I could never be a businessman. I’m not shrewd enough to pull moves like that.
by hebrew hammer on Feb 9, 2012 5:06 PM EST up reply actions
Both sides are going to have plenty of ammo that they’ll try to spin off as positive PR that won’t end up making a huge difference. I’m not convinced that a PR spin in favor of the owner’s side is going to be nearly as powerful as the players (who hardly make any of the Winter Classic profits; they’re all going to the league) sitting at the negotiating table saying to Gary Bettman “are you SURE you don’t want that massive pile of money that you’re going to make on January 1?”

WC money is part of league wide Hockey Related Revenue, of which the player’s currently get 57%. That total is part of the cap calculation, and the bigger that HRR number is the less money the players actually lose to escrow at the end of the year…. believe me they see a good amount of it eventually.

That makes complete sense and I’m not even going to try to question you on it, but if I were to be told that it’s more complicated than that, I wouldn’t be surprised either. The fact that there’s a dispute about it probably means something, and it was going to come up either way in CBA talks.
by everybodyhitswoohoo on Feb 9, 2012 5:29 PM EST up reply actions
Well, it is a lot more complicated than that, but the details of how complicated it can get don’t change the end result, honestly.
That article is interesting, because the first part of it is about the alumni not getting a piece of the game they play in, rather than the current players not getting their 57% on those WC revenues. That’s a big issue, because the WC didn’t exist at the start of this CBA, and those alumni aren’t active members of the NHLPA anymore. So they’d have to put a clause in that hypothetically 50% of those alumni game revenues go into league-wide HRR and the other 50% go into that proposed fund for struggling players, or something like that. Then the second part is about the guys who play in the actual WC game not getting a bonus of sorts for participating in the spectacle.
My point was those league profits do get redistributed to the players, but not in the forms discussed in that PD article. In my comments, I’m relaying that the players do eventually benefit financially from all the money the league makes off the WC, and so all the players will want it to be played, not just those who play for Detroit or Toronto.
No matter how you look at it, the WC being scheduled puts both of them on a deadline. It doesn’t matter whether the league is at fault or the players are at fault if it doesn’t happen, because neither side wants to see sponsors back out, fans revolt, and the pie they’re fighting over to suddenly get a whole lot smaller.

Well when league revenues are at the heart of the negotiations and everyone wants a piece of the pie. Without this game the pie gets a whole lot smaller. Also the NHLPA uses that week to garner some revenues for there players funds as well.
