Suspensions since 2009

Since discipline has (yet again) (or is it still?) become a topic of conversation among hockey fans, I wanted to take a little look at how suspensions have played out from the 2009-10 season to today. I am looking only at regular season and post season suspensions, including carryover from preseason (i.e. if a player is suspended 5 games and serves 2 preseason and 3 season games, I'm counting it as 3 games). After the jump, suspensions by team by year:

In total, there have been 386 games of suspensions over the last three seasons. It has increased every year, from 78 games in 2009-10 to 134 games in 2010-11 to 174 games so far in 2011-12. For all the complaining about a lack of suspensions, suspensions have more than doubled in two years, and it could be over 200 games of suspensions next year if the trend continues.

Total suspension-days by team, 2009-2012:

Anaheim - 24
Atlanta/Winnipeg - 6
Boston - 15
Buffalo - 10
Calgary - 20
Carolina - 5
Chicago - 20
Colorado - 4
Columbus - 11
Dallas - 8
Detroit - 6
Edmonton - 13
Florida - 1
Los Angeles - 3
Minnesota - 11
Montreal - 13
Nashville - 4
New Jersey - 4
NY Islanders - 34
NY Rangers - 7
Ottawa - 1
Philadelphia - 24
Phoenix - 40
Pittsburgh - 44
San Jose - 9
St,. Louis - 11
Tampa Bay - 3
Toronto - 3
Vancouver - 18
Washington - 14

All 30 teams have had at least one suspension over the past three seasons (although Florida gets an asterisk for having 1 suspension-day for saying nasty things about Subban. Really, Florida? That's as good a reason to move you as anything else). Oddly enough, for a team that the league is allegedly biased towards, the Penguins have the most suspension days of any team in the league over the last three seasons. Phoenix is only even in the running because of Torres' 25 day suspension this week. Only the Islanders are over 30 other than those two, and Philadelphia is a distant 4th at 24 days. On the contrary, this suggests the league is quite aware that the Penguins have a tendency to be the Pengoons, and are dealing with them accordingly.
