I figured I'd share some of my ideas for this offseason with you guys. No capgeek, no numbers, I'll make it real easy on everyone. What I would do is take care of our own free agents first. That list includes:
Jaromir Jagr,
Blair Betts,
Marc-Andre Bourdon (RFA),
Matt Carle,
Pavel Kubina,
Ian Laperriere, Tom Sestitio (RFA),
Jakub Voracek (RFA), Harry Zolnierczek (RFA), and
Michael Leighton
There are others, but these are the important ones (in my mind). First off, the most important thing that we need to do is to RE-SIGN MATT CARLE!!! I know he's a peice of shit, but in reality is a very good player that is very important to this team. Secondly, re-sign Voracek (which should be easier) Iwould very much like to see Jagr back in the orange and black next year, but unfortunately I just don't think it is going to happen. Zolniercyzek and Sestitio are valuable minor league callup options, and re-signing them should be easy. Bourdon isn't going anywhere. Kubina's gone for sure. Betts is old and hurt. Now the interesting part is Michael Leighton. Five hole has been great for the Phantoms, but both
Johan Backlund and
Jason Bacashihua are free agents as well. If it were up to me, I would re-sign him as hopefully he won't see any NHL action.
Now that we've taken care of our own free agents, we can look to the open market. First off, I would waive or trade Jody Shelley for a late round pick. Second, I would see if a deal for Shea Weber is in the cards. As much as I hate to say it, Pronger is not likely to come back and we need a big skill guy on the back end. Unfortunatley, Coburn and/or Grossman are not the solution to Prongs' absence. I would NOT go after Ryan Suter. Ryan Suter is pretty much a more expensive, more hyped version of Matt Carle (you know it's true) If Weber is not available, I would go after a free agent such as Jason Garrison. A lot hinges on the possibility of that Weber deal. I would give up Read, a first, a prospect (Zolnierczyk or even Gustafsson), and Bob. I would prefer to keeping JVR but I wouldn't be opposed to trading him if we got a high-profile player such as Weber. If Nashville asks for too much, I would not accept the trade.
So, there's my ideas. A lot of ifs for me. Feel free to agree or disagree or post your own scenario or whatever you want to do. Again, I didn't run anything through capgeek or look at any numbers, but if you want to go right ahead.
