The Flyers will open at home against Pittsburgh on Jan. 19 and then travel to Buffalo for a game against the Sabres the following day.
Despite the rumors earlier in the week that the Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins could kick off their 2013 season with a Saturday-Sunday home-and-home series, it appears that won't be happening. According to the Buffalo News, the Flyers will be in upstate New York for Game No. 2 of the 2013 season.
Won't be "official" until later today but it will be Flyers at Sabres at 12:30 p.m. Jan. 20 on NBC. Two time-tested TV markets open schedule— John Vogl (@BuffNewsVogl) January 11, 2013
With the expected 3 p.m. start time for Saturday, Jan. 19's home opener potentially indicating an NBC game as well, the Flyers could open with two back-to-back games on national television.
Buffalo is another market, like Philly and Pittsburgh, that always reels in good ratings for NBC, probably because hockey is one of the two most fun things to do in cold weather. It should be a pretty busy 24 hours for the Flyers next weekend when all this kicks off, but it's going to be a fun 24 hours, too.
It's expected that the full schedule will be released by the NHL on Saturday or Sunday after the NHLPA ratifies the new CBA. Training camp is still expected to open Sunday as planned.
