First off, Id like to take a few lines here to give my background information. My name is Ian Barlow; I’m a 23 year-old South Jersey native and an avid Flyers fan. I have been following this particular site for the better part of the last year or so, and I’ve been following the Flyers organization since I was seven years old, which coincided with my (somewhat mundane) five year stint playing youth hockey at the Medford Ice Rink in New Jersey. I played mostly right wing, center, and goalie; however, after realizing my skills would likely never translate over into my dream of playing on the same line as Eric Lindros, I decided to drop the 5 AM games and expensive equipment, and focus my athletic career on football.
I still followed the Flyers passionately over the next several years, up until the 2004-05 NHL lockout. It was at this point that I decided against watching the sport. That is, until I moved on to college. I attended the University of Maine at Orono, a college with a strong hockey program and a region with a strong hockey fan base. My freshman room mate got me back into the swing of things with hockey, and I haven’t looked back since. My post-freshman career has consisted of a Bachelor’s Degree in the field of Journalism (with a particular focus on that of the sports world), with a minor in English.
I could probably rattle off almost every player to lace up the skates and throw on the Orange and Black over the past four-to-five years, but I’ll digress from that to continue on with my audition for a position on this site. With concerns about being a particularly “hilarious” individual, I’d like to point all those of you who are interested to my Facebook page. Pretty much every status is, in itself, a brief insight into my character and sense of humor, which can range from “witty” to “downright absurd”.
As for my credentials on reporting for the Flyers, I’m very opinionated on the team and its personnel moves (or, sometimes, lack thereof). I try and watch every game, and those that I am unable to view on television are usually streamed on my laptop or listened to on the radio. I wouldn’t say that I have a particular area of expertise, but I do have a passionate following of this team that has existed pretty much since the day I watched my first hockey game as a child. I love the Flyers, and have fond memories of watching the Legion of Doom line dominate while I was in my youth (which eventually drove me to pick hockey as my childhood sport of choice).
I find analyzing games to be a strong suit of mine, as well as picking up on transaction rumors and things of that nature. I am currently unemployed (as most people in my graduating class are finding, it is difficult to get a job in this economy), and I am hoping to hone and use my skills acquired through my journalism degree. Writing about the Flyers for BSH would be the icing on the cake, if I was given the opportunity to write for the site. I have been a strong follower of BSH for awhile now, and it would be an honor to contribute to the site. That’s essentially it. I’ll post a sample of my writing in a future post, but for now I figured I’d just give some background. Thanks for your time and consideration.
