What season wouldn't be complete without an injury to one of the Flyers top defensemen? Its no surprise Mezaros, who was feeling great after coming back from an injury the first couple games, only to be injured in a seemingly harmless check in a game against the rangers. Everyone knows the existing condition of the Flyers defense, but one player in particular peaks my interest. Right now his biggest claim to fame is the ongoing, I'm not gonna use the ****ing word, close friendship with Max Talbot. There is a good chance he may play his way into another spotlight, securing a spot on the Flyers blue line.
The signing of Bruno Gervais was very underwhelming and unheralded, but I think we may see a turn around in Gervais' stats with a increased role (14:36 TOI against NYR as compared to 18:56 in FLA) and for now comfortable lock to play every night while Mez is out.
Look, I'm not gonna sit here and pretend I've seen a lot of Gervais in action, but I can see how a quick look at his stats can be misleading. While his plus/minus(a stat some could argue is misleading to begin with) has been poor, a lot of that has to do with the poor teams he's been a part of his entire career. In 384 career NHL games, his teams have only gone to the playoffs once, 5 games with the Islanders. Despite a lack of talent, Gervais has posted a respectable amout of points. So far, he has played well. While his defensive skills aren't anything to write home about, Gervais has not looked out of place, and he hasn't hesitated to pinch on the offensive end resulting in scoring chances.
Bruno Gervais can't fill the hole left by Mezaros, or Matt Carle as people have unfairly compared his signing to. He can however plug a hole, and take this window of opportunity to show he belongs on the third pairing.
