Game 8...won by a coach? Sort of...

If I told you this game was won by a coach, would you believe me? Two pivotal shifts where the coach freed up the most dangerous player in the NHL...prior to that Crosby was being perfectly shut down and out chanced...by...Couturier.

With the exception of 3 shifts (two of which will be featured in the Schenngenda) the Flyers showed that at some point this season there will be a turn around (probably after a trade or two for some scoring wings), that they are not the worst team in the league and they have something very special in #14.

First, what's wrong with Giroux? Same thing that was "wrong" with Crosby for the majority of the game...

Sometimes it's just a center and wing...

Sometimes it's 4 guys...

Sometimes it's a center, a wing and a defender...no matter what, there are ALWAYS multiple players around Giroux. Why? Because no one in the league fears the Flyers wings.

Looks a lot like how the Flyers were attempting to shut down Crosby...

THE SCHENNGENDA

Let's start with a positive...this was really nice work by Schenn...in this sequence he wins a puck battle, knocks down Malkin, creates a lane by moving his feet, finds the open man and creates a high quality scoring chance...really nice stuff here!

Nice stuff, right? Reminded me of Mike Richards...but, if you dare compare Schenn to Richards, that would be great disrespect to Mike Richards...especially after you watch the next two sequences...if you are not infuriated by this first one, you might need to ask yourself the following question: which is more important to you, the team or the player?

This play starts off with Malkin knocking the puck off Raffl's stick...the announcers claimed this was a Raffl mistake...maybe...watching it in real time, he did take one stride with the puck and had two men converging on him. Schenn is in the correct position of support.

Malkin claims the loose puck, but is angled off by the support in Schenn. This play should have been over and done with...or, at least Schenn takes the body, neutralizes Malkin and support comes in to help out.

Malkin puts the puck between Schenn's feet...but too far...

Timonen recovers, but the only puck support is his defensive partner...the FRICKEN CENTER IS SUPPOSED TO COME BACK AND HELP OUT...sorry...just typing this is getting me pissed off...

Those with heart conditions and give a sh*t about the O&B should not watch Schenn's feet in the following sequence...you have been warned...

Remember folks, Schenn is the center here...the "manager" of the ice and the puck if you will...the guy that must support the defence, and that it's Evgeni Malkin about to recover a loose puck - GET YOUR ASS BACK IN THE F-ING PLAY!!!

Deep breath...let it go...tied ball game, right? Everything is cool, Couturier has got Crosby nailed down, we're still in this one...and this is how a Coach wins a hockey game...

With the convenience of the bench in the attacking zone, Dancing Danny Bylsma recognizes that the Flyers weakest defensive line is on the ice...and what does he do? He grabs the near side winger and gets Crosby out there...Crosby is playing wing on this play...

I hope Couturier said something to the effect of "I'm only 20 and am shutting your ass down...cause Crosby's response was "bullsh*t!"

Conclusion: we just saw how one player, and a coach exploiting weakness, can in fact make all the difference in the outcome of a game...the question is, which player, Schenn, Crosby or Couturier impacted the outcome the most?
