Game two...more of the same...

Same game different team...what's the common factor?

Do you really think the Flyers roster does not have enough talent to score one 5-on-5 goal in two consecutive games? That's the question I'd like you to have in your mind prior to viewing these screen shots and offering any response. Can Giroux, Lecavalier, Voracek, Hartnell or Simmonds have the ability to score one goal? Have they lost all sense of creativity and skill with the puck? Or, is there something much bigger going on?

And, here we go...the obligatory opening minute pinch...

While Simmonds read and reacted to the play well, this pass tells a lot about how the coach approaches the game...last man, passing through a player, in front of his own net. Most NHL coaches bench that player...Laviolette actually advocates this sort of zone exit.

Speaking of zone exits...here is the root cause to why the Flyers cannot get anything going 5-on-5...it's a 3 zone issue...starting with their break out and transition...

Typically starts D-to-D, in this case Giroux to Coburn...Coburn to Schenn...note the distance of the pass, where the Flyers forwards are and what you don't see here...

That results in...this...5 bad guys around the puck...forcing the recipient of the long pass to go backwards...

...and then the typical turnover...recall this is supposed to be a "transition" system...

The goal against...not 100% Streit's fault...#22 is supposed to shut off that passing lane...but, there is something very concerning here, a repetitive pattern and it might not be what you think...

Gionta is not the likely goal scorer in this scenario...but Plekanec is...

Ok, enough about that...what about the PP? Who "owns" the middle of the ice? It doesn't matter if it's 5-on-5 or on the PP, the Flyers want to own the walls and cycling lanes...just stack the middle and shut them down...yes, this is unit #2, but check out who is playing the "big man" role...#24...

So what's wrong with Giroux? Hell, he should be able to not only get through the man assigned to him, but then skate through the other 4 guys, right? Recall this one from the Leafs game?

Giroux actually made a very creative play on the zone entry with a dish to Hartnell...but who cares if they are giving you the wall? Yes, they got into the zone, but then what?

Here's Giroux not "pounding the f-ing boaawwwwdddiiieeee" and losing the lose puck battle...but what does it matter? Look at the position of the Habs waiting...everyone knows if the Flyers win this loose puck battle the puck goes back up top to the point...

Check out how the Habs are defending here just after a zone entry...

And lastly, what happens when the Flyers go 3 men deep on the attack..d-man simple chip not to anyone in particular...

And away they go...3 men on 2 rapidly backing up defenders that allow for easy, quality zone entry with momentum resulting in what could have been a high quality scoring chance if not for the pass being mishandled by the shooter...

Conclusion: If we see the same things tonight and again in Florida this system was DOA at the start of the season (I say it was dying 3 seasons ago and this is just a slow, painful death we have all experienced) and we are watching the tail end of the Laviolette era...
