Episode IV: A NEW HOPE

It is a period of civil war. Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire...

A Win! Not one but two 5-on-5 goals as a result of a neutral zone turn over! Solid goaltending! And, some old-time-hockey...but there is a lot to work on...and man, I know #10 scored, but he did not have a night to write home about...see "Schenngenda"...it's a long one...

First, what's different? Well, the breakout lanes for one...I find that in the opening 5 minutes of a game is when a system is most apparent...before all hell breaks loose...(old lane in red)

Note how close Giroux and Hartnell are, and Simmonds' lane...skating to the puck rather than away...

Next notable change...clogging the neutral zone with a 3rd man...more on this in a minute...

The next thing that stood out was...well...guys acting like they want to block a shot...seriously, this was comical...here's Hartnell praying he doesn't get hit...

Here's Talbot taking out the short stop breaking up the double play...and I wish I had captured the image of Simmonds doing the worm...the thing about shot blocking is that you actually want to get hit with the puck...but in the right spot on your body...just ask Lappy...but, at least they were trying, right?

Zone entry is much different...the play starts from a neutral zone turn over...

Voracek pulls up to create at the same point they would normally dump and chase...(red arrow is the old system)

Linesman blew this call...but it was nice to see a little neutral zone / zone entry creativity...

The first goal. This one play might have put me over the top on the Lecavalier signing...he busted his ass to get back...sensed that the cross ice pass was coming behind him and while still busting his ass to get back, broke up the pass without looking...ahem, oh look, Schenn's flat footed...

That ninja move by Lecavalier resulted in Voracek getting the loose puck and again, carrying over the line...and attempting a shot on net, rather than dumping into a corner...

Time to count the Schenn strides...1...

Hmmm, I think we stopped at 1...

This almost wasn't a goal...that's how fast players in the NHL close on shooters...but, hey, it all worked out...and the Flyers are on the board, right? Or is there a very apparent pattern here with #10?

The second goal...started off of the 3rd man back (#14) clogging up the neutral zone...by the way Versteeg is a lazy, mouth guard chewing bumb...

Love #14's puck awareness...there were about 4 other examples in this game where he was so flipping smart with the puck...

Will Rinaldo make it in time?

FOOOOOORRRRRREEEEEEEEE!!!! Good lord Couturier, that wind up! Although, going by memory, this could be his first NHL slapshot attempt...no joke...and there was some heat on that sucker!

SCHENNGENDA SECTION:

This play started when Schenn intercepted a pass at the top of the circle on his own side of the ice...somehow he allowed his momentum to carry him behind the net with the puck only to be cut off in the corner...so while he made a nice play intercepting the pass, it only resulted in an even deeper turnover...

Next up in the Schenngenda, Voracek and Lecavalier working off of a neutral zone turnover create a great scoring chance...

I called this sequence "getting used"...I'll let the pictures do the talking, but this should've been a breakaway instead of Lecavalier breaking up a much deeper threat...

Ok, enough of that...one more bit of ugliness and then maybe the beginning of an identity?

Tomas Kopecky must die...figuratively...although, curious to see if this spills over into the Nov 25th game...

Conclusion: This team can score goals...it just requires a 60 foot slap shot to start the play...or, the neutral zone turnover. Not the prettiest of wins, but we will take it. On to win #2.
