Flyers @ Penguins Scoring Chance Summary and Game Grades

Lady luck smiled favorably on the Orange and Black players tonight. The Flyers got run over by a mac truck and by some miracle survived. Ray Emery is perhaps the sole reason the Flyers escape Pittsburgh with 2 points in the standings. Remember that the next time someone tries to tell you "a good goalie needs to steal games". As you can probably guess by now, the numbers are really really ugly. I'll let my scoring chance charts illustrate that point. Penguins chances are red, Flyers chances are blue.

Basically an all you can eat buffet for Crosby and the Penguins. The penguins got as many scoring chances in the second period than the Flyers had the entire game. 28 to 11 was the final total. Brace yourselves for the individual line report cards. ( Each player gets a + for a scoring chance for, and a - for a scoring chance against)

Forwards ( Even Strength )

  • 1st Line ( Hartnell -9, Giroux - 11, Voracek - 10 ) F
    Most Frequent Opposition: Sutter Line
Well I can guarantee you that Brandon Sutter didn't do that to Claude Giroux. Berube was furiously line matching tonight and for good reason. Any time Giroux's line was out against the Penguins Top-6, they got demolished. CorsiFor% doesn't look much better as they convincingly lost the puck possession battle overall. Outclassed in just about every facet of the game they didn't even register a single scoring chance for at even strength. The only time Giroux even threatened Fleury was during special teams play. I guess give him credit for that. Just an ugly night for this line at 5 on 5 and a very disappointing performance.
  • 2nd Line ( B. Schenn 0, Lecavalier 0, Simmonds +1 ) A
    Most Frequent Opposition: Malkin Line

Brayden Schenn and Wayne Simmonds deserve a beer or two after this game. These two were the only reason the Flyers actually led on the scoreboard for most of the game. Unlike the last couple games, they got a difficult match up and handled it OK. Overall they lost the puck possession battle but managed to break even in scoring chances. Schenn gets both Flyers goals so that's a plus. I'm guessing Berube put Lecavalier on Malkin to get a semi-favorable size match up and it worked.
  • 3rd Line ( Downie +1, Couturier -1, Read -1 ) B+
    Most Frequent Opposition: Crosby Line

Give Couturier a ton of props for tonight. He was hard matched against Sidney Crosby and barely lost the scoring chance battle. The Flyers shut down line also gets the unique distinction of being the only forward group to actually win puck possession. In terms of CorsiFor%, Couturier broke even at 50%. Downie and Read were the best Flyers forwards with 56% and 52% respectively. So we've got a 20 year old center who can actually keep his head above water against arguably the two best centers in hockey. That's one thing we can hang our hat on tonight. In my mind, Couturiers foot speed is the only thing holding him back right now from being an absolutely elite center. Even still, he managed to make several great plays and was one of the few Flyers driving to the net in the offensive zone.
  • 4th Line ( Rosehill - 3, Rinaldo -3, Hall -2) F
    Most Frequent Opposition: Vitale Line

Was anyone else cringing a little every time this line got some ice time? They spent almost zero time in the offensize zone and we're big minuses in the scoring chances. Zac Rinaldo's CorsiFor was 10% tonight. Let that sink in a little. That means they spent almost all of their limited ice time hemmed into their own zone and giving up chances. Berube might have been better off just keeping them off the ice entirely.

Defensive Pairings: ( Even Strength )

  • 1st Pair ( Coburn 0, Timonen -2 ) B-
    Most Frequent Opposition: Crosby Line
We're very lucky to have Kimmo Timonen playing at such a high level at his age. They actually won puck possession against a tough match up, and did okay in scoring chances. Not a stellar outing for this pair, but they weathered the Crosby/Malkin storm. Both the Coburn and Streit pairings split time between Crosby and Malkin, which is why there doesn't seem to be a specific match up against the Malkin line.
  • 2nd Pair ( Grossman -6, Streit -8 ) F
    Most Frequent Opposition: Crosby Line
Big negatives in scoring chances and abysmal Corsi numbers for this pair. To put it bluntly, they got abused. Both Streit and Grossman we're visibly outclassed in terms of speed. Which I guess isn't unexpected. But it was painful to watch the Penguins dance around these two tonight. I hesitate to make a strong judgement because of one game, but I think the Flyers should be actively looking to upgrade this defensive pairing however possible if they hope to contend with the elite teams in the NHL.
  • 3rd Pair ( L. Schenn -7, Gustafsson - 4 ) F
    Most Frequent Opposition: Sutter Line
Another soft match up and a terrible performance. Their puck possession numbers we're even worse than the Grossman pairing. Again, I'm going to venture a guess and say that most of those scoring chances came when Berube couldn't protect this pairing from the Penguins top-6. Brandon Sutter isn't that good. Much like the rest of the Flyers defense, this pair looked slow and overmatched by the Penguins team speed.

Special Teams:

  • Power Play A, 2 opportunities, 4 shots, 1 scoring chance, 1 goal. The powerplay didn't get much opportunity to work tonight, but I'll give them credit for getting the game winning goal. Hopefully they can keep this trend of PP success going. Cautious optimism looking forward.
  • Penalty Kill D-, 3 opportunities, 5 shots against, 7 scoring chances against, 1 goal against. Pittsburgh's power play toyed with the Flyers penalty kill. This unit can thank its lucky stars that they didn't give up 3 or 4 goals. The Penguins puck movement was stellar and the Flyers couldn't adjust fast enough to cover. While the PK as been a consistent strength throughout the early season, tonight they looked overmatched.

Goaltending:

  • Ray Emery, A++, Emery stole 2 points from the Penguins with some fantastic work in net. He stopped 30 of 31 shots and the one goal he allowed was right on Crosby's stick in the slot. An all around great performance from Stevezina's back up.

Overall Team Performance: D-

Ray Emery, Sean Couturier, and Brayden Schenn deserve most of the credit for the win. It was their individual performances that allowed Philadelphia to squeak by a dominant Penguins squad. Otherwise, the Flyers were thoroughly outclassed in all facets of the game. Giroux's line got smoked, the defense was awful, and I'm not sure how Jay Rosehill gets paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to be a terrible hockey player. 9 times out of 10, the Penguins should have won this game. Better lucky than good I suppose.
