Oilers @ Flyers Scoring Chance Summary and Game Grades.

Let me start by saying this is the most dominant performance I've recorded for the Flyers so far this season. And let me soften that awesome statement by saying the Edmonton Oilers are really really bad at hockey. But give the Flyers credit for taking advantage of a porous Oiler defense and being solid defensively in their own end. Edmonton was kept to the perimeter most of the night and only managed to generate 3 or 4 really grade A scoring chances. The numbers don't do this game justice. Just to show you how big the gap was between these two teams I took a screen cap of my scoring chance charts. Flyers chances are red dots, Oilers are blue.

Edmonton practically ceded the middle of the ice to the Flyers all night long. I almost feel bad for Devan Dubnyk. But he didn't help his own cause, letting in the Lecavalier goal from an extreme angle. I couldn't even count that one as a scoring chance. Alright, enough gushing. Lets get to the individual performances.

Forwards ( Even Strength ):

  • 1st Line (Hartnell +4, Giroux +3, Voracek +3) A-, Giroux was all over the place tonight and probably could scored 3 or 4 goals if he wasn't cursed right now. This line was matched primarily against Sam Ganger and Taylor Hall and convincingly won puck possession and scoring chances. Both Hartnell and G potted big goals tonight. The only thing stopping this grade from being higher is that they allowed their fair share of scoring chances in their own zone. Otherwise, this was a really great night for this line.

  • 2nd Line(B.Schenn -4, Lecavalier +2, Simmonds 0) C+, Brayden Schenn got abused in the chance department. And this line as whole lost the possession battle and were among the Flyers worst Corsi% performers. It says something when even Rinaldo's line can push the play more effectively. To top it off, they played primarily against the Oilers third line centered by Gordon. I should be giving this line a D grade at best, but Lecavalier personally had a solid game in the scoring chance department and showed his usual flashes of brilliance. Also that last goal was sweet. I'm starting to think this line combo just doesn't work. There isn't really a single player to blame, as all three of these players have been positive contributors on different lines. Second game in a row when they've been among the Flyers weakest performers.
  • 3rd Line( Raffl +5, Couturier +8, Read +4) A++, Couturier was exceptional this afternoon. His line had Corsi% in the 75-80 range. That means they were directing the play at Dubnyk for essentially the entire game. A stunning performance and they did it against Ryan Nugent Hopkins and Jordan Eberle, who are generally strong corsi performers on a dismal Edmonton squad. Couturier was personally involved in setting up multiple scoring chances and got several of his own dangerous looks from the slot. He is piling up the strong performances of late, and if this continues I'd expect a big offensive outburst soon. Its only a matter of time. Sean seems to be more willing to shoot the puck and be selfish lately, which is a good sign. For the cherry on top, they barely let any scoring chances go the other way. Awesome stuff.
  • 4th Line ( Rosehill -1, Rinaldo 0, Hall -1) B-, A goal! From Jay Rosehill!?!? Normally I am pretty hard on the 4th line but they weren't as huge a liability as usual. In limited minutes against soft competition they managed to break even in puck possession and only fall slightly behind in scoring chances. A solid rebound from a terrible outing a few days ago.

D-Pairs ( Even Strength )

  • 1st Pair ( Coburn +4, Kimmo +5) A+, Coburn and Kimmo were visibly active in the offensive zone all afternoon long. Big positives in the scoring chance department and a decent night possession wise against the RNH line. They continue to be the best d-men on the ice night in and night out. No complaints as usual.
  • 2nd Pair ( Grossman +3, Streit +3) A+, Two assists for Streit and a solid performance overall for this pairing. Matched against the Gagner line they were the best Flyer's d-pair possession wise and won the scoring chance battle easily. Grossman had some big shot blocks tonight that prevented dangerous looking scoring chances and Streit was creating good looks for team mates in the offensive zone. We need to see this type of performance more often from these guys.
  • 3rd Pair ( Gustafsson +1, L. Schenn 0) B, Not quite a liability, but not a big strength either. They matched up against Edmonton's third line and broke even in scoring chances and puck possession. Chances went both ways with them on the ice. I think its safe to say that Erik and Luke are the Flyers biggest question marks on the blue line right now. I'd like to see more from them before passing too harsh a judgement, and hopefully Berube keeps them together. This is an improvement from Mez, Gill pairing for sure.

Special Teams:

  • Power Play B, 4 opportunities, 9 shots, 7 scoring chances. Still no goals but a huge improvement in terms of puck movement, shots, and opportunities. Rather than being kept to the perimeter, the Flyers PP actually challenged the middle of the ice and almost scored several times. It remains to be seen if they can do this consistently or if they just took advantage of Edmonton's abysmal special teams play.
  • Penalty Kill B+, 4 opportunities, 3 shots against, 1 scoring chance against. Amazingly, the flyers penalty kill actually out chanced Edmonton's PP tonight. Yet another illustration of just how lopsided the competition was in this game. Anytime your PK can generate scoring chances, you're doing something right. Edmonton did score a power play goal but they didn't generate much in the way of pressure.

Goaltending:

  • Stevezina ( 26 shots, 28 saves, .929 save% ) A+ , Mason faced a decent amount of shots but relatively few scoring chances. That said, he made some big saves on chances right in the slot and didn't have any hope of making a save on the second goal by Taylor Hall. He remains a rock solid contributor for the Flyers.

Overall Team Performance: A+

The Flyers were all over the Oilers tonight and probably could have won this 7 to 0. Offensively, they produced high quality scoring chances all night long and rarely let anything dangerous happen in front of Mason. I can't stress enough how good Couturier was tonight, and he was followed closely by a stellar performance from Giroux. The only complaint I have tonight is that 2nd line with Lecavalier and Schenn has had 2 bad games in a row now. Not sure what Berube can do to give them a boost. Flyers fans can rejoice that we aren't quite as bad as the Oilers. Lets hope this win serves as a spring board for both G and Sean's confidence. A tougher opponent awaits in Ottawa on Tuesday and we can gauge the Flyers a bit more fairly then. For now, lets enjoy the win.
