Finally a home game and chance to put that abysmal road trip behind us. The Flyers dominated the first 40 minutes of the contest, holding Montreal to just 4 even strength scoring chances. Montreal did manage a late surge in the third period to make the numbers look a bit more respectable, but overall a very convincing win. Total chances were 19 to 11 in the Flyers favor. Even strength chances were closer at 14 to 10. Lets see how Berube's new lines worked out.
1st Line (Raffl +4, Giroux +5, Voracek +4) A, Those of you who watched the game probably expected these results. It was obvious that Giroux's line was the most dynamic offensively. They scored both goals and generated the most offensive chances out of any Flyers line. Berube gave them minutes against both the Desharnais/Pacioretty line and the Eller/Galchenyuk combo. A legitimately tough top-6 match up and they did very well. Now on the negative side, they only had slight edge in shot attempts and also gave up the most chances against. Overall, it was still a brilliant game and I would hope this line stays together.
2nd Line (Hartnell +1, B. Schenn +1, Simmonds +1) B, I actually thought Brayden Schenn and company had a very good game. Although they didn't generate nearly as many chances as the 1st line, they did put together a handful of grade A chances from directly in the slot. They earn the distinction of best Corsi performers as they controlled well over 60% of the shot attempts while they were on the ice. Hartnell's "demotion" didn't change how this line was used by Berube. I'd say they still got the easiest minutes out of the Top-9, facing off against the Plekanec/Gionta line.
- 3rd Line (Downie 0, Couturier 0, Read -1) B, Couturier's line struggled to generate much of anything offensively. They did their usual stellar job defensively despite tough usage against the Eller line and a healthy portion of the defensive zone starts. Chances against were limited and Coots managed a slight edge in shot attempts. (Although his linemates numbers were worse) The Canadiens did eventually score against this line with the goalie pulled. But they were damn near perfect defensively for 99% of the night.
- 4th Line (Vandevelde -1, Hall -1, Rinaldo -1) C, If you were hoping that the addition of Vandevelde over Jay Rosehill would help this line's underlying metrics, you are going to be disappointed. This was the worst Corsi line and the only Flyers line to post negative chance numbers. On the bright side, there was a noticeable sequence where Vandevelde made a smart play in the offensive zone which led to a Zac Rinaldo scoring chance.
1st Pair(Coburn +2, Timonen+2) A, They controlled shot attempts and chances against a Top-6 match up. No goals against and some noticeable offensive jump from Coburn! I deem this performance Key and Peele gif worthy!
2nd Pair (Grossman -1, Streit, -1) C, No gifs for you! These guys earn the honor of being on the ice for the most chances against out of the entire team, let alone defensive pairs. They were also the worst defensive pair in terms of possession, barely controlling 40% of shot attempts. On the positive side, they didn't get completely run over. Personal pet peeve alert, Mark Streit needs to learn how to hit the effing net with that howitzer of a shot.
3rd Pair (Gustafsson +4, L. Schenn +4) A, A pleasant surprise! This was the best possession d-pair for the Flyers, controlling well over 60% of shot attempts. They came out well ahead in scoring chances and were even on the ice for a goal or two! Only caveat is that they did get their usual sheltered minutes but its still encouraging to see them dominate in those minutes. Gus brought all of the good elements of his game and very few of the bad. Its nice to see a Flyers defensemen who can competently carry the puck into the offensive zone when a pass to the forwards isn't available.
Powerplay D, 3 opportunities, including a 5 minute major, 5 shots, 5 chances for, 1 chance against. The PP gave up a shorthanded break, and looked completely out of sorts for a large portion of their TOI. They did eventually break through for some chances during the 5 minute penalty, but couldn't score. Not enough sustained pressure, uninspired puck movement, and sloppy entries. A familiar theme for the Flyers PP this season!
- Penalty Kill A, 1 opportunity, 1 shot against, 0 chances against. The PK unit didn't see much ice but Montreal generated next to nothing.
Stevezina A, He stopped 20 of 21 shots and 10 of 11 chances. Mason probably wants that last goal back, as it just barely leaked through his arm. But for 99% of the night he was steady.
Overall Team Performance: A
Keep these lines together please! The Flyers almost dominated this game from start to finish. And they didn't implode when Montreal surged in the final 15 minutes. Overall a good win, and one that this team desperately needed after that road trip. My only legitimate concerns would be the 2nd defensive pair and the powerplay. Thankfully neither one cost us the win!
