Flyers @ Capitals Scoring Chance Summary

Ahhh the one that got away. The Flyers played a solid, even great game against the Capitals in their own building. But some flukey goals and a Steve Mason puck handling gaffe allowed the Caps to surge back and tie the game late. Total chances were 15 to 12 in favor of Philly. And even strength chances were 11 to 8 for the Flyers. Those numbers look even better for the Flyers if you exclude 4v4 overtime 15 to 9, 11 to 5 respectively. Holding the Capitals to 5 even strength chances in regulation is indubitably awesome. As you'll see ahead, it was primarily a 2 line show for the Flyers.

Forwards(Even Strength):

  • 1st Line(Raffl +4, Giroux+5, Voracek +2) A, WAFFLES!!! Giroux and Raffl have something special going. This makes two games were this line has dominated a Top-6 match up offensively. Giroux and Raffl were among the best Flyers forwards at controlling shot attempts, with CorsiFor of 69% and 59% respectively. So with Giroux on the ice, almost 70% of the play was directed at the Capitals net. Not too shabby. Voracek's numbers diverge a bit from his linemates, but I'd attribute that him seeing minutes on other lines at some point during the game.
  • 2nd Line(Hartnell -1, B.Schenn -2, Simmonds -3) C, Ineffectual offensively against a relatively soft match up. Boo this line! BOOOOOOOOOOO
  • 3rd Line(Downie +2, Couturier 0, Read -1) B, Everyone's numbers took a slight hit from OT, and the final minute of 6v5. Other than some breakdowns in 4v4 OT and the final minute of 6v5 for the Caps, I though this line played well. As expected, they saw a ton of ice-time against Ovi and matched him chance for chance. Think about that for a second. Our 21 year old Coots went +4/-4 against easily one of the most dangerous scorers in NHL and completely shut him out at 5v5. And they added a goal on top of that stellar defensive performance.
  • 4th Line(Vandevelde 0, Hall -1, Rinaldo 0) C, The Flyers 4th line continues to be a puck possession black hole but thankfully they didn't give up much defensively.

D-Pairs(Even Strength):

  • 1st Pair(Coburn -4, Timonen -3) D, Ugly numbers all round for this pair. They were out shot and out chanced, but they did see the majority of their minutes against the Caps first line. There is a caveat. Kimmo only had 11 minutes of ice time compared to Coburn's 17. Braydon saw some ice time with Grossmann as his partner for whatever reason. I'm not sure I like that combination, as the Flyers tend to give up a ton of shots and chances with them together
  • 2nd Pair(Grossmann 0, Streit -1) C, Not much better than the first pair, but Streit did manage to showcase some of that offensive skill with a nice goal. Berube chose to lean heavily on Grossmann tonight, giving him more minutes, and tough ones at that, than any other defenseman.
  • 3rd Pair(Gustafsson +4, L. Schenn +4) A, Gus is enjoying his return to the lineup. He posted the best CorsiFor on the entire team with 74%. Although this pair saw softer minutes than the rest of the D, its awesome that they were able to dominate the puck so convincingly. It would help the Flyers tremendously going forward if Gustafsson can continue to be an offensive force.

Special Teams:

  • Powerplay B, 4 opportunities, 6 shots, 4 chances, 0 goals. The PP didn't produce goals, but they had handful of dangerous chances that forced the Caps rookie goalie to be spectacular.
  • Penalty Kill B, 5 opportunities, 6 shots against, 4 chances against, 1 goal against. The PK gave up a goal, albeit a flukey one off of Timonen's stick. Otherwise a very strong game against the 2nd best powerplay in the entire league.

Goaltending:

  • Steve Mason C, Mason stopped 29 of 33 shots and 9 of 12 chances. At least one of his goal's against came from a non-scoring chance area. In my mind, the first 3 caps goals were flukey at best. 2 went in off of Flyers players and and the 3rd goal Grossmann completely screen his own goalie. BUT Mason's puck handling gaffe at the end of the game cost his team dearly.

Overall Team Performance: B+

50 minutes of dominance is overshadowed by 10 minutes of critical mistakes and just plain bad luck. If the Flyers play 10 games like this, they probably win 8 or 9. Any time you hold the other team to 5 or fewer even strength chances, you were doing something right. Don't dwell too much on this one. Focus on the positives, like delicious delicious waffles. And the maple syrup and butter that is Giroux and Voracek. Seriously, can we just call them the Breakfast line from now on?
