What's Next for Flyers?

Improvement is one word you could use to describe the Flyers current off season. They have seemingly done everything needed to get themselves back into the playoffs. Philly has acquired a puck-moving defender, added an impact forward and addressed their goaltending questions. They have additionally cleared out short and long term cap space with the buyouts of Danny Briere and Ilya Bryzgalov. Paul Holmgren has impressed many to say the least.

But are the Flyers done? Well, technically, we know for a fact they are not seeing how they are just over one million dollars on the salary cap. So a move to create cap space is imminent. The obvious deal is to ship out Andrej Meszaros for next to nothing just to clear four million off the books and clear a body off the roster (which is a jam-packed with defenders). They may also re-sign Simon Gagne to round out the top-nine if the price is right for the veteran. But could something bigger be in the works?

Even with all the improvements, the Flyers still lack that big time, number one defensively. As of right now, only one name pops out; Alex Pietrangelo. He has yet to be re-signed by the Blues and is undoubtedly on the verge of super stardom in the NHL. Although the Blues will most likely want to hang onto him, there is still reason to believe that Holmgren may be able to pry him out of St. Louis;

-Flyers have the necessary assets to complete such a trade (Brayden Schenn, Braydon Coburn, Sean Couturier, Matt Read, etc.)

-Flyers are very deep at forward so they can afford to give up a notable piece up front.

-The Blues are extremely deep on defense (Shattenkirk, Jackman, Bouwmeester, Cole, Polak and Leopold).

-Blues are in search of help up front.

Such a deal could see the Flyers giving up Coots and Coburn (and maybe a prospect such as Mcginn or Lauridsen) for Pietrangelo. The Blues would get a long term centre to play behind Backes and Berglund, while also acquiring a top-four defender to join Shattenkirk, Bouwmeester and Jackman to round out an impressive top four, while the Flyers would finally add the number one defender they have long been looking for. Although unlikely, such a deal is not impossible.
