Predators @ Flyers Scoring Chance Summary

Total Chances: 18 to 13 Predators

Even Strength Chances: 12 to 10 Predators

Penalties finally caught up to the Flyers in a big way. At even strength the game was almost dead even. The Preds were able to control large segments of the game thanks to their powerplay. After both extended man advantages, the 5v3 and the 4 minutes high sticking, Nashville had a flurry of 5v5 momentum. The Flyers could push back for a few minutes, but inevitably would take another penalty and start the cycle over again. Berube has been paying lip service to better discipline for weeks but it still hasn't translated to the ice surface.

Forwards(Even Strength):

  • 1st Line(Raffl -2, Giroux -7, Voracek -7) F, Giroux and Voracek got blown up at 5v5. Raffl was shielded from the carnage by some brief stints on the Couturier line. For the 2nd game in row Berube flip flopped Raffl and Vinny. It isn't working. Whats interesting is this line was again had the strongest overall possession numbers on the team. They simply struggled to generate any quality offensive chances. The Preds were able to do the same thing to G and Voracek in the previous game in Nashville. I checked to see if this was just a bad match up for G but he faced Fisher's line the first go around, and spent the majority of his ice time against Legwand in this game. For whatever reason, Nashville is able to defensively expose the Flyers top line.
  • 2nd Line(Hartnell +2, B.Schenn +4, Simmonds +3) A, Terrible possession stats be damned! This was the best offensive unit despite being outshot by a decent margin. They gave up almost nothing inside the circles and generated a decent amount of their own offense. Cherry on top, they converted on 2 of their chances for goals and deserve most of the credit for getting the Flyers a point out of the game.
  • 3rd Line(Lecavalier -2, Couturier 0, Read 0) C, Low event hockey for the 3rd line. They generated very little and gave up very little. Which I suppose is an improvement over some of their recent games. Lecavalier took some shifts on the top line and got some extra chances against for his trouble. Good news is that Matt Read definitely seems to be a boon to this trio's possession numbers. If that continues, expect some scoring chances and goals to follow.
  • 4th Line(Downie +2, Hall 0, Vandevelde +1) B-, This line actually got involved in the action tonight. Downie and Vandevelde combined for a fantastic wide open chance, but Carter friggin' Hutton shut the door. Still terrible possession stats, but who cares. (Side note, Downie's numbers were actually quite good, perhaps he'll earn his way back to the 3rd line?? Please Berube? PLEASE?!?)

D-Pairs(Even Strength):

  • 1st Pair(Coburn -3, Timonen -4) D, Another example of positive Corsi not necessarily leading to positive results. Coburn had some of the best possession stats on the team, although Timonen's were in the tank. Not sure why their numbers wildly diverge given Coburn spent all of 5 minutes away from Kimmo. End result is the same. They got burned but thankfully didn't give up a goal.
  • 2nd Pair(Grossmann 0, Streit +2) B, Can't say I noticed either Streit or Grossmann too much and maybe that's a good thing. I don't have either one directly involved in creating a chance. So we'll give em a B for some fine passenger work.
  • 3rd Pair(Meszaros +2, L.Schenn -1) B, Mez revved his offensive jets back up after a quiet night in Buffalo. He was easily the most involved defender in creating chances and he had a hand in both Flyers 5v5 goals. The Flyers did yield a lot of shots against with Andrej on the ice and that's concerning. If he keeps creating more chances then he gives up, Mez should be a net positive on the roster.

Special Teams:

  • Powerplay C, 7.5 minutes of ice time, 3 shots, 3 chances, 1 goal. The Flyers didn't generate a powerplay scoring chance until the 3rd period. They had trouble just getting set up in the offensive zone. Too few shots and too few chances for a unit that could have swung the game in the Flyers favor. Give them some credit for tying the game late, but an anemic performance overall.
  • Penalty Kill D, 7.8 minutes of ice time, 6 shots against, 6 chances against, 2 goals against. The PK almost survived an extended 5 on 3 without giving up a scoring chance, but finally yielded to a strong Predators powerplay. Then they surrendered a flurry of chances against in the 4 minute 5v4 thanks to Grossmann's careless high sticking penalty.

Overall Team Performance: C

Flyers controlled the game for a few stretches but spent way too much time killing penalties and convincingly lost the special teams battle. I wouldn't be too worried about the top line's performance unless we end up facing Nashville in the Final(fingers crossed!!). Look for G and Jake the Snake to rebound against the Islanders. I'd be much more concerned about the Flyers consistent problem with discipline as its finally caught up and cost them a game. Lets face it, the Flyers are an average 5v5 team right now. Winning the special teams battle is going to determine whether they sink or swim in the packed Metro standings.
