Hurricanes @ Flyers II Scoring Chance Summary

Total Chances: 20 to 14 Canes

Even Strength Chances: 18 to 11

One of the worst games I've seen in awhile from the Flyers on home ice. I'm going to put the period summary up top for this report just to stress how bad the Flyers were.

Period Totals EV PP 5v3 PP SH 5v3 SH
1 1 7 1 7 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
2 8 4 7 2 1 0 0 0 0 2 0 0
3 5 9 3 9 2 0 0 0 0 0 0 0

Scoring chances in the first period were 7 to 1 in favor of the Canes. 7 to 1.

Whats the problem now?

Flyers came out with some jam and won the 2nd period decisively out chancing the canes 7 to 2 at evens. They even managed to tie the game early in the third. But Carolina turned the jets back on and easily won the 3rd period chance battle 9 to 3, including a 6 to 0 run after Hartnell's goal. Most of the Flyers forwards were god-awful, the defense was bad, and they spent incredibly long stretches hemmed into the defensive zone. Remember all the problems the Flyers had on the breakout early in the year? They seem to have resurfaced.

Forwards(Even Strength):

  • 1st Line(Raffl +2, Giroux +3, Voracek +4) A, The one salvageable offensive performance of the night and the only line to actually maintain extended shifts in Carolina's zone. Giroux was your most involved forward of the game, creating 5 scoring chances on his own. Voracek had a great night as the set-up guy, assisting on Giroux's goal and assisting on 3 other scoring chances. Relative to the rest of the team, this was also the best line at limiting chances against, despite being on the ice for the go ahead goal.
  • 2nd Line(Hartnell -7, B.Schenn -6, Simmonds -5) F, This line spent most of the night pinned in the defensive zone giving up shot after shot and chances galore. Lots of botched clears and turnovers helped contribute to the Cane's dominance. Its been awhile since we've seen a performance this bad from the 2nd line. Hopefully its just an bump in the road.
  • 3rd Line(Lecavalier -5, Couturier -4, Read -5) F, Marginally better than the 2nd in shot and chance counts, but overall they still got crushed. They continue to be offensively challenged, even with Vinny's offensive talents on the wing. The Flyers shut-down line has been defensively porous ever since Downie was demoted. If I was Berube I'd have Downie back on Coots wing starting immediately.
  • 4th Line(Vandevelde 0, Hall 0, Downie +2) C, Downie got involved in some action with the Top-6 and managed to contribute offensively. Otherwise extremely low event hockey for the 4th line.

D-Pairs(Even Strength):

  • 1st Pair(Coburn +1, Timonen +3) A, If Timonen could play 60 minutes a night, the Flyers would be in good shape. Unfortunately his Finnish magic only gets about 17 minutes to shine. Even still, he was by far the Flyers best d-man and the best possession driver on the entire team. He controlled north of 70% of the shot attempts while he was on the ice and got directly involved in a handful of scoring chances.
  • 2nd Pair(Grossmann -5, Streit -2) D, Streit is doing his best to generate offense with his pylon of a partner but this pair was still a disaster. Like the Schenn line, they spent far too much time pinned in the defensive zone and gave up 8 or 9 scoring chances to boot.
  • 3rd Pair(Meszaros -6, L.Schenn -5) F, Only generated a single even strength chance for and got demolished in chances against. Ugly night for a 3rd pair that can usually be counted on to tread water.

A believe this is technical term for the defense

Special Teams:

I'm not gonna bother showing you the numbers for these units. There was only 6 minutes of special teams play between the two clubs and the only thing notable that happened was Hartnell's goal. Is it possible the Flyers are better off taking 5 or 6 penalties a night? 5v5 doesn't seem to agree with this hockey team.

Overall Team Performance: F

When 3/4ths of your forwards suck, and the defense implodes, there's no other acceptable grade to give. A good 2nd period doesn't mean squat if your getting blasted for the rest of the game. A frustrating game to watch all around.
