Flyers @ Kings Scoring Chance Summary

So through some combination of laziness and the flu I've fallen 3 games behind the Flyers with the scoring chance summaries. Sorry folks!!! I know there's at least a few of you who still read these things. In order to catch up, I'm gonna do these spark notes style and trying to crank 3 or 4 out this week.

Total Chances: 16 to 7 Kings

Even Strength Chances: 14 to 5 Kings

The Kings spent a full two periods in the Flyers zone, and the chance numbers came out lopsided as expected.

Here's the my chance chart for a quick visual. Kings chances are red. Flyers are blue.

There was a lot of consensus in the post-game thread that the Flyers played a solid defensive game. And for the first 35 minutes or so of this game, that narrative held true. But towards the end of the second, and for most the 3rd period the Kings started to break through. Give the Flyers credit for keeping up with the Kings for that long, but when you spend so much time defending mistakes are inevitable. Some blown assignments and egregious turnovers led to point blank opportunities on Mason.

Forwards(Even Strength):

  • 1st Line(Hartnell -6, Giroux -5, Voracek -6) F
  • 2nd Line(B.Schenn -2, Lecavalier -2, Simmonds -1) D
  • 3rd Line(Read 0, Couturier -1, Downie +1) C
  • 4th Line(Raffl -3, Hall -1, Rinaldo -1) C

The Kings did a masterful job against the first line, holding them to zero even strength scoring chances. Giroux got a little space when he extended his shift on the first Flyers goal, but they was probably the only sniff he got at 5v5 all game. Things got a little better for the Flyers as you moved down the line up, which is unusual. Best even strength line was the reunited Read - Coots - Downie combo, as they combined for 3 of the Flyers 5 even strength scoring chances.

Defense(Even Strength):

  • 1st Pair(Coburn -2, Grossmann -1) C
  • 2nd Pair(Meszaros -2, Streit -4) D
  • 3rd Pair(L.Schenn -4, Gustafsson -5) F

Surprisingly the Coburn, Grossmann pair did okay. Not outstanding by any measure though. Things go downhill from there however. Big Schenn and Gus had a really rough night in their own zone. L. Schenn's play seems to have fallen off of a cliff lately.

Special Teams:

  • Powerplay B+, 2.9 minutes of ice time, 2 shots, 1 scoring chance, 1 goal
  • Penalty Kill A, 4 minutes of ice time, 3 shots against, 2 scoring chances against, 0 goals against

Overall Team Performance: D

I likened this game to the one we won in Pittsburgh whilst getting slaughtered in chance counts 28 to 11. The Kings play a low event game relative to the Penguins, but the results are almost identical if not better. On that November night in Pittsburgh, the Pens controlled 71% of the high quality scoring opportunities. Last night, the Kings controlled 73%!! of the scoring chances. The Flyers got a little lucky, and once again benefited from a strong penalty kill to eek out a victory. I like the results Flyers, but I'd be lying if I said was satisfied with the process.
