Game 61: Rangers @ Flyers Scoring Chance Summary

Total Chances: 19-17 NYR

Even Strength Chances: 14 to 8 NYR

After the 1st period, the balance of 5v5 play swung in the Rangers favor. Special teams play ending up saving the Flyers bacon, allowing them to escape a dreadful 2nd period effort with a 3 to 2 lead. And a strong powerplay effort in the 3rd swung the momentum back in the Flyers favor.

Period Summary

Period Totals EV PP 5v3 PP SH 5v3 SH
1 6 7 4 3 2 0 0 0 0 4 0 0
2 3 8 1 7 2 0 0 0 0 1 0 0
3 8 4 3 4 5 0 0 0 0 0 0 0

Forwards(Even Strength):

  • 1st Line( Hartnell -2, Giroux -3, Voracek -1) D
  • 2nd Line( Lecavalier +1, B.Schenn +1, Simmonds +1) B
  • 3rd Line( Read -2, Couturier -3, Downie -3) D
  • 4th Line( Hall -2, Raffl -2, Rinaldo -1) D

You shouldn't be surprised to see some weak performances here, with 5v5 play heavily in the Rangers favor. Schenn's line was the best even strength unit for the 2nd game in a row and the only forward line to actually come out ahead in scoring chances. Coot's line got duhhhhstroyed in shot attempts and territorial play. But Couturier did score this beauty of a goal in the 1st....

Just so its not all bad!!

Defense(Even Strength):

  • 1st Pair( Coburn -3, Timonen -1) D
  • 2nd Pair( Grossmann -4, Streit -3) D
  • 3rd Pair( Meszaros -1, L.Schenn 0) C

Pretty much every defensive pair struggled at even strength in terms of chances against. What sets the 3rd pair apart is their offensive chances with Mez going +5/-6 and L.Schenn +3/-3. After a strong game against the Sharks, Grossmann has reverted to his old self. Worst shot and chance differentials on the defense. Yikes! Overall, an ugly afternoon for the defense. With the trade deadline looming, this remains the major area of need for Holmgren to address. If the Flyers want to make an impact in the playoffs, they need some help on D.

Special Teams:

  • Powerplay A, 7.1 minutes of ice time, 10 shots, 9 scoring chances, 1 goal.
  • Penalty Kill C, 5.4 minutes of ice time, 7 shots against, 5 scoring chances against, 1 goal against

The Flyers strong PP effort allowed them to control the 3rd period and close out the game in convincing fashion. For the most part, they moved the puck well and forced Lundqvist to make some tough saves. If the Rangers had been allowed to continue dominating at 5v5, the outcome of this game might have been very different. Short handed play wasn't as great. Early on the Rangers PP got some grade A scoring chances in close on Mason. Thankfully they only gave up one goal.

Overall Team Performance: C-

A little bit of luck and some strong powerplays went a long way for the Flyers in this one. For the 2nd game in a row, they got outplayed at even strength. The score could have been lopsided in the Rangers favor but they missed on two wide open net chances in the 2nd period. The Flyers first two games back from the Olympic break haven't been encouraging in terms of the underlying numbers.
