Defensive Zone Exits - Raw data vs. Pittsburgh 3/15

So in our discussion of evaluating defensemen, it came up that perhaps some methods of tracking zone exits (clearing the defensive zone) would be critical in evaluating a defenseman's effectiveness. I went ahead and reviewed the tape from Saturday's game against Pittsburgh - which was quite a dominant score, so the shots were pretty lopsided too (40 to 25). I make no claim that this data is 100% accurate; it's only as good as my eyes could make it, using rewind to check jersey numbers and follow the puck. Hopefully, someone else can continue (and improve upon) this collection method, as well as make some sense out of the data once we have sufficient record to do so. So here goes:

carry = skated with the puck out of the defensive zone out = passed out to teammate (can be modified with TO to be intercepted pass and turnover) TO = turnover in zone block = blocked shot (can be modified with TO to be blocked but recovered by opponent) clear = pass out of defensive zone to offensive zone (modified by 'icing' or 'SH') whistle = stoppage of play in defensive zone (modified with reason) PP = power play time SH = shorthanded time
