The period numbers paint a clear picture of how this game progressed. Flyers dominated the lackluster Caps early, especially at even strength. Once they'd built a substantial lead on the score board, the Flyers went full turtle. Sitting back on a lead is almost never a good idea and it came close to biting the Flyers in the ass. Washington's singular strength this season has been an obscenely good power play. So of course, Berube's players dutifully made their way to penalty box in the 3rd period and paved the way for a heart attack inducing comeback. Chances in the final frame were decidedly lopsided, with the Caps going on an 8 to 3 run.
Head to Head Match Ups:
As you can see from the match-up chart, Flyers did most of their offensive damage against the Caps bottom 6 group. Giroux's line was good, the middle of the line up was okay, but the real surprise tonight was the play of the 4th line. Raffl's line dominated in both shot and chance differentials. Waffles had an exceptionally strong game and was directly involved in creating all 4 of his line's scoring chances. I'd really like to see him in Top-6 role but it seems like Berube believes he still needs some seasoning in the North American game.
Grossmann and Streit really really enjoy playing against the Caps. Not sure if they're actually playing better or Washington is just that terrible of a 5v5 team. Maybe its both. Obviously everyone's interested in how MacDonald did in his first outing with the Flyers. Other than potentially notching his first point he wasn't particularly noticeable. Very low event hockey at 5v5 in terms of chances, and a stunningly average shot differential. He was neither a disaster nor a revelation. Best to revisit MacD's performances after a 10 to 15 game sample.
Nothing unexpected here. Flyers PP was good, Caps was better. And the Flyers PK suffered. A notable bright spot is Couturier's continued ability to generate short handed scoring chances.
Overall Team Performance: A-
A complete lack of discipline is the only major detraction of note in this game. Otherwise, the Flyers played really well against a bad team. Get ready for a rough schedule up ahead.
