GAME 1 EYE TEST - First period break down...have hope (there was a lot of good...they can win this series)!

There's a lot of good in the first period of Game 1...here are some screen shots of what stood out...the Flyers defence, the Flyers systematic attack, and Akeson...

First things first, the idea that the Flyers d-men "turned the puck over" (give aways) is nowhere near true...in fact, quite the opposite...in fact, they were the reason (and the goalie) they were in this game...

This one single play in the opening minutes could have changed the entire complexion of the game...and luckily for the Flyers it didn't, too...but this rush wasn't due to a Flyers d-man, it was due to the 3rd man missing his assignment...

Let's look at a winger who has played 2 NHL games...and has learned from Terry Murray...

The systematic attack - maybe Berube knew what he was doing?

Wait, wait, wait, wait!!! A Flyers d-man scores a goal because the Flyers d-men kept the Rangers pinned, and a Rangers d-man turned the puck over from pressure? What universe is this?

Want some more Akeson? Me too...

Conclusion:

The Flyers played a near perfect first period. They did this thanks to their defence, their systematic dump and chase attack and a kid with 2 NHL games under his belt. What struck me most about Akeson wasn't his speed and it wasn't his skill, it was his awareness and anticipation. That's what got Matt Read to stick, let's hope that happens with #42...or at least he is in the line-up tomorrow, he deserves it.

Defence didn't cost the Flyers this game. Goaltending didn't cost the Flyers this game. Puck possession and neutral zone gaps didn't cost the Flyers this game. A stupid mistake eliminating a power play, the failure to maximize opportunities by the forwards and yes, a rookie mistake, did. The most important aspects to consider (and feel good about) is that the goal was generated by the first line systematically, their defence played well and they were in this game until Akeson's penalty.

The Flyers come out and execute tomorrow (or today based on when I finish this damn thing) like they did in the first period, and this thing comes back to Philly tied 1-1.
