I'll start this off with a disclaimer: I hate the Andrew MacDonald contract as much as humanly possible. It's been over two months since it happened, and I still have actual nightmares about it on a regular basis. It was one of the worst contracts awarded across the entire NHL this season, and as a result we are stuck with a guy who is not very good for a long time. We're in a poor salary cap position going into this summer and the MacDonald contract is a big part of the reason why. This graph illustrates my emotional response to the contract.
The sad reality, however, is that we are stuck with MacDonald for at least a couple seasons. We just signed him for 6 years; We aren't trading or #freeing him any time soon. It happened. Its over. My request going into the summer is... can we PLEASE not compare MacDonald's extension to every single contract that gets signed?
The contract is very, very bad. Everyone knows that it is very, very bad. Like I said earlier, it is going to be one of the worst signings across the entire NHL this year. Thus, almost every single contract signed this summer is going to be way better. Much better players than MacDonald will be signed for similar amounts of money, and similar players will be signed for half of what he is making. There will be quality FAs who we cannot pursue because of that contract (see Erhoff, Christian). There will be signings that make us want to throw up all over ourselves.
The summer has barely even started and already I've seen comparisons such as:
-Marian Gaborik is making less per year than MacDonald
-Andrej Markov is only making slightly more than MacDonald
-Ron Hainsey, who is similar to MacDonald in talent, signed for slightly over half of what MacDonald makes
-Brayden Schenn is making half of what MacDonald makes
We don't need to compare these contracts to MacDonald's contract to know how bad it is. We knew it sucked the day it was signed. We need to just accept that it exists and move on (acceptance is the final stage of grieving). This is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to new, better contracts. If we do this all summer, we will almost definitely be alcoholics and manic depressives by the time the puck drops in October. We'll be sitting at a Flyers bar for the season opener acting like this. Lets not subject ourselves to unnecessary torture.
When you see a new contract awarded and want to compare it to AMac's, just don't do it. It's not worth it. Just say "Ah fuck it, at least it isn't Clarkson", and move on. That is all. Lets go Flyera.
