Would you like to see Antti Niemi as the Flyers starting goalie?
When it comes to who's going to be the goaltender next season for the Philadelphia Flyers, it doesn't seem like there's too many options left. Obviously, Michael Leighton is the guy if the season were to start today, but I think 90 percent of us can agree that if Paul Holmgren has any smarts left in his brain, he'd be wise to go after one of the goalies still on the market.
That group, of course, is thin in terms of talent. In reality, it only includes Jose Theodore and Marty Turco. Turco seems the best bet, while Theodore could perhaps be out of the Flyers price range, but then again, the number of teams looking for goalies drives down the price on any of these guys.
There is one more name that could be set to appear on the horizon, however, and he's a familiar face. The name is Antti Niemi, and as his arbitration hearing with the Chicago Blackhawks came to a close today, the noise surrounding the proceedings seem to suggest that the arbitrator's ruling may not necessarily settle things.
If the Hawks deem the figure awarded for the one-year deal too high they could let Niemi walk as an unrestricted free agent and move in a different direction at a critical position. They also could accept the ruling and later trade Niemi or another player for some relief for their serious salary-cap issues.
General manager Stan Bowman confirmed the same in a press conference tonight with the media, saying that the arbitrator is expected to rule on Saturday and that the three options for the club are acceptance, flat out rejection or a trade. If Chicago decides that they can't fit Niemi into their tight, salary-capped plans, he'll be out of town one way or another. Would you like to see Philadelphia on the end of his plane ticket?
Blast From The Past: A Collection Of Old Flyers TV Intros
I was stumbling around on YouTube earlier this morning when I found myself listening to Bob Galderstein, an old studio host on PRISM Network, talking about such recent events as the 35-game unbeaten streak and that first Cup-winning season, just a decade ago.
That's the first game from the 83-84 season, and the television intro that went along with it. Pretty darn cool to see these things again, wouldn't you say? So I poked around on YouTube some more and discovered about 20 more of these things, spanning from the 70s to the 2000s. Some of them feature familiar faces, while some of them feature people most of us have never heard of.
Either way, I find them pretty damn cool.

BSH Radio 25: Frank Seravalli of the Daily News talks Gagne, Turco, Holmgren
The dog days are here. To help get through them, we welcome Frank Seravalli of the Philadelphia Daily News on to our little radio program this week to help wade through the mess that was the Simon Gagne trade.
Paul Holmgren has made a bit of a mess of our team in the last few weeks, and Frank joins the show to help us figure out exactly what the general manager has up his sleeve. Will the Flyers chase a goalie, perhaps one who's name begins with Marty and ends with Turco? Will they be after another winger?
mikefive also joins the program and we play a rousing match of trivia. Does Ben finally go down in defeat? Find out by listening to this week's episode. We've hit the quarter-pole!
Our new Eastern Champs shirt. Scores of playoff games listed on the back. What do you think?
Buy it in the BSH Store. Available in S, M, L, XL, XXL. Ladies sizes also available.

We're Number 4! We're Number 4! 1974-75 Flyers Ranked As Fourth Most-Hated Sports Team
Sports Illustrated sent this over to us this morning, and typically we just throw stuff like this in the Fly By, but there's nothing else to talk about. So here's a post about how the 1974-75 Flyers are the fourth most hated sports team in history.
The Broad Street Bullies were the first hockey team to use intimidation as a tactic. Urged by coach Fred Shero to "take the shortest route to the puck carrier and arrive in ill humor," rugged enforcers like Dave (The Hammer) Schultz (pictured), Bob (Hound) Kelly, Don (Big Bird) Saleski and Andre (Moose) Dupont racked up penalty minutes in record quantities while clearing the way for skill players like Reggie Leach, Bill Barber and three-time NHL MVP Bobby Clarke. They were nicknamed by Jack Chevalier and Pete Cafone of the Philadelphia Bulletin, who wrote in 1973 that "the image of the fightin' Flyers is spreading gradually around the NHL, and people are dreaming up wild nicknames. They're the Mean Machine, the Bullies of Broad Street and Freddy's Philistines." The Flyers captured back-to-back Stanley Cups in 1974 and '75 and remained one of the league's biggest road draws for years to come, but many traditionalists contend their legacy was corruptive on hockey. "They brawled their way to the Cup," longtime Toronto Star writer Frank Orr recalled in HBO's documentary about the team. "To the purists, they represented everything evil about the game. They were a disgrace."
Which teams beat the Flyers, you might ask? At number one, the 1986 U of Miami football team. Number two, the 88-89 Detroit Pistons, number three, the 1992 Dallas Cowboys. There's only one other hockey team on the list, and that's the 2000-01 Toronto Maple Leafs.
