The Flyers first move in free agency is a goaltender, but it's not the NHL backup we think it is. They've signed German league goalie Rob Zepp to a one year, $600,000 contract, according to Elliotte Friedman.
Zepp has played with Eisbären Berlin since 2007-08. He's never played in the NHL. The 32 year old Ontario native was great with Berlin in the German DEL, winning five league titles in his time there. With Cal Heeter being let go by the organization -- he wasn't given a qualifying offer before Monday's deadline -- they needed a second goaltender for the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, and this is it.
It's expected that Zepp will split time with Anthony Stolarz, the 2012 second round pick who will likely play in the AHL this year after two years with the OHL's London Knights. Zepp played with Claude Giroux and Danny Briere with Berlin during the 2012-13 NHL lockout.
