Philadelphia is currently tied for last place in the Atlantic, but that’s highly misleading, both because they’ve played four games less than three of their rivals and because by one measure, the Flyers have been the best team in the entire NHL: Philadelphia leads the league at 1.13 goal difference per game, a portent of even better results to come. The Flyers boast two of the biggest stories of the young season: the wildly successful return from the KHL by controversial netminder Ray Emery (7.0 GVT) ––who is in the top 10 in wins, GAA and save percentage––and the Norris Trophy caliber play of offseason acquisition Chris Pronger (5.7 GVT), who is being given credit for the improved play of 25 year old Matt Carle (4.5 GVT) – Carle and Pronger are tops among all skaters at plus-17 and plus-13. Rookie James van Riemsdyk (3.9 GVT) has provided a welcome boost to Philly’s offense, offsetting the long term loss of Simon Gagne (0.7 GVT). He has 2 goals (1 GW, 1 SH), 2 assists, ~18 TOI, twice was a star of the game.

Too small a sample size to really say anything substantive, but he certainly is playing some good hockey right now, and it should be real interesting to see how he plays on Wednesday.

There was speculation in our open thread this evening that Arron Asham was injured. He didn't play past the midway point of the second period, and following the game, Anthony SanFillippo reported that the forward will be out two weeks with an oblique strain.

JVR "probably" out with the flu, Cote likely in

Riley Cote looks to play in just the fourth game of his season tonight, moving from his cozy seat on press row to an equally cozy seat next to Brian Boucher at the end of the Flyers bench.

The reason for Cote's likely insertion into the lineup? According to CSN's Sarah Baicker on Twitter, Rookie James van Riemsdyk has a case of the flu and "probably" will sit this evening. Don't expect Cote to see much ice time, if in fact he does get in the lineup. In three games this season, he's played a total of 7 minutes, 13 seconds.

Forbes: Flyers 5th Most Valuable NHL Team

The Flyers continue to be rank among the NHL's most valuable teams, according to Forbes. The organization is estimated to be worth approximately $273 million, good for fifth highest in the NHL. It's interesting to note that the Original Six and the Flyers make up the top seven in the list.

Taking a look a little closer at the Flyers' individual financial situation, we see that the organization's growth has been modest over the past number of years, while revenue fluctuates quite a bit. The organization continues to be pretty inefficient, though, when it comes to generating operating income (it's not clear whether these are Comcast-Spectacor figures or Flyers-specific figures; is it just a coincidence that in 2001, when the Sixers were in the NBA Finals, Forbes reports $13 million in operating income compared to $1-4 million in first/second-round Flyers eliminations and actual losses during Flyers ECF trips?).

The NHL’s general managers agreed Wednesday they will make a rule change dealing with hits to the head at their major annual meeting in March.

But at this point they have not agreed on how the change will be made, other than the goal is to eliminate blindside hits and perhaps contact between a shoulder and a player’s head.

What the league’s GMs did agree to do when their meetings in Toronto ended Wednesday was to establish a committee that will study the issue and make a report to the GMs at the March meeting. At that point, all of the GMs surveyed at the end of Wednesday’s meeting agreed there will likely be a rule change after further discussion.

To continue the discussion on illegal hits the head . . .
Chris Drury is blindsided by Curtis Glencross but, at first glance, it really doesn't seem bad. The angle of the video is poor and doesn't really provide much evidence for how Glencross hit Drury. However, it was bad enough to sideline Drury with a concussion. This has been a topic of conversation all year and I think we should compile a list of all the hits to the head that have occurred so far this year, here at BSH, and take a close look at what the NHL needs to do to confront this issue.

I didn't see anybody else mention this, but I thought it was worth pointing out. This is the same guy who falsely accused Briere of a dirty hit... now he's the one suspended for a clearly dirty move. I found it amusing.

Simon Gagne to have surgery Tuesday; Out 6-8 Weeks

Flyers left wing Simon Gagne finally agreed to have surgery on Tuesday to repair two small hernias on his right side and will miss 6-8 weeks.

Additionally, according to general manager Paul Holmgren, Gagne will have his rectus abdominis repaired on both sides. So, it’s two surgeries.
