Lisa Hillary Leaves DC, Joins CSN Philly As John Boruk's Replacement

Lisa Hillary, above, is moving from CSN Washington to CSN Philly.

The Flyers beat at CSN Philly is getting a miniature shake up.

According to the DC-based On Frozen Blog, the Capitals beat reporter at CSN Washington, Lisa Hillary, will be moving from the Nation's Capital to Philadelphia, where she will serve as the on-air talent covering the Flyers.

This change doesn't impact the coverage at CSNPhilly.com. Tim Panaccio and Sarah Baicker will continue to cover the Flyers just as they have for the last year. This only impacts the television side of things, where we believe that current beat reporter John Boruk will be moved away from covering hockey.

(Update: FlyerGuy18 noticed that Boruk's Twitter account, @CSNFlyer, is gone. Deleted from the history of the world -- or something, thanks Google Cache. Pretty strong evidence that Hillary is replacing him, I'd say.)

He's covered the Flyers since arriving at the network in 2006. We don't believe he's leaving CSN completely, so don't get all crazy and spin that the wrong way.

As for Hillary, she's been with CSN DC for a little over three years now. The Ottawa native formerly worked at TSN in Canada, where she was a weekend anchor on SportsCentre and a reporter covering the Calgary Flames. She's well-respected and by all accounts, she does great work in covering hockey.

NHL unveils TV schedule; Flyers on Versus nine times, NBC up to four times

A story about the TV schedule is a perfect excuse to post this picture.

A story about the TV schedule is a perfect excuse to post this picture.

The NHL released their national TV schedule today. Here are the details as they relate to the Flyers:

- The Flyers will be on Versus a total of nine times, which is less than Pittsburgh, the Rangers, Boston, Chicago and Detroit. It starts on opening night in Pittsburgh on October 7. The other Versus games: 10/14 vs Tampa, 10/26 vs Buffalo, 11/16 at Montreal, 12/8 vs San Jose, 12/14 vs Pittsburgh, 1/11 at Buffalo, 1/25 vs Montreal and 3/22 vs Washington.

- Two of the Versus games, 10/14 vs TBL and 12/8 vs SJS, are "bonus games" for them, meaning they will be televised by the local crew and simulcast on Versus. In the Philly area they'll be blacked out on Versus, but across the country, the Flyers will be seen on Versus.

- The NBC schedule isn't set in stone due to flex scheduling, but they could appear on NBC as many as five times: 1/23 at Chicago, 2/13 vs Los Angeles, 2/20 at Rangers, 3/6 at Rangers and 4/3 vs Rangers.

- The February 20th game is definite as NBC will run with regional coverage that day, and you've got to assume that NBC will opt for the Chicago game on January 23. The LA game seems less than likely, as the other options are PIT-NYR and BOS-DET. The 3/6 Rangers game is against BUF-MIN and the 4/3 game is against MIN-DET and TB-CHI. When all is said and done, it looks like the Flyers will be on NBC four times.

- For those of you not in the Philly market, NHL Network will have a ton of live hockey this year. That schedule is not yet complete but the Flyers will surely be on there at least a few times. The Network will have 75 live games this year in the United States.

- In Canada, the Flyers are on TSN a total of three times, on 12/9 at Toronto, 12/15 at Montreal and 12/28 at Vancouver. Four games will be on NHL Network in Canada: 12/5 at Islanders, 1/2 at Detroit, 1/23 at Chicago and 4/3 vs Rangers.

- The Flyers will be on Hockey Night In Canada twice, on 10/23 vs Toronto and 2/26 at Ottawa.

Flyers sign four to AHL contracts, including goalie Nic Riopel

Twas mentioned in the Fly By this morning, but it does deserve its own story. The Flyers signed four players to AHL deals today, according to a bunch of different reports. The team confirmed via Twitter.

2009 draft pick Nic Riopel, Phantoms defenseman Logan Stephenson, and new acquisitions J.P. Testwuide and Jesse Dudas all are under contract with the organization now.

Riopel has been kind of a question mark in recent months. There were reports that he was a free agent, there were reports that he wasn't. There were reports he was under contract, there were reports that he wasn't. Now, it's all cleared up.

Stephenson was a solid defenseman for the Phantoms this past year. He very well could project to the NHL one day, and Tim McManus has said several times on Twitter this morning that he's a solid leader and a candidate for captain this year.

As for the other two, Testwuide is not like his younger brother, at least according to his stats. In 58 AHL games last season, he put up just eight points and 111 penalty minutes. Do the Phantoms need to beef up?

Dudas played in the International Hockey League and the Central Hockey League last year, so that's probably all you need to know. It seems like he'll be an AHL player and nothing more.

Arron Asham Signs With Penguins, Now A Teammate Of 'Gutless' Matt Cooke

Photo

The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed forward Arron Asham to a one-year contract, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Ray Shero.

The contract is worth $700,000 and is for the 2010-11 season.

>> team press release

Oh but Arron, we had so many memories. How could you do this to us?

This signing is actually pretty damn funny. Remember back to January. In a scrum in the third period of a game against the Penguins, Matt Cooke bit Arron Asham. Woooooo drama!

More after the jump.

Hello, Wells Fargo Center: New Letters Go Up In South Philly

It was official on July 1, when the new fiscal year began. It was doubly official on July 27 when the WACHOVIA letters began to come off the building. Today, it's even more official as the WELLS FARGO CENTER letters begin to go up in South Philadelphia.

KYW 1060 has the details:

The letters were pre-crafted by Eastern Sign Tech of Burlington, NJ.  Installation manager Jamil Halstead says the Wells Fargo signs will be completely installed in time for the Lady Gaga concert on September 14th:

"The project is a month long, as far as in-the-field work.  In the shop, it’s probably two months long."

I'm not sure what I would've done if the letters weren't up for the Lady Gaga concert!

Didn't see this one coming: Riley Cote retires, becomes Phantoms assistant coach

Tough guy Riley Cote has retired from professional hockey and will take a job as an assistant coach with the Adirondack Phantoms, the team announced on Monday afternoon. Cote only played a handful of minutes in all of 2009-10, and he spent most of the season in a suit and tie instead of hockey equipment.

When it comes to the salary cap, Cote's contract immediately comes off of the books. His cap hit only sat at $550,000, but any little bit can help the Flyers' tight money situation. It was expected that Cote would've either played in Adirondack next year anyway -- or perhaps he would've spent some more time in the Flyers press box -- where he wouldn't have counted against the salary cap.

Now, he'll be heading to Glens Falls anyway, but there won't be any playing involved in his move. His hockey career is over and his coaching career has begun. Who saw this one coming? A trade or perhaps a year with the Phantoms and a chance with another club? Cote is only 28 years old.

I think I can speak for all Flyers fans when I wish Cote the best in his new career as a coach. Personally, this move makes me happy as a fan because it frees up that roster spot that went completely to waste a year ago, but Cote never once complained about his role on this team last season. When he played, he went out and did his job admirably, even if he wasn't always successful at it.

Off the ice, Cote has devoted much of his life to charitable causes. A few years ago, his sister was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, and Cote worked hard through the minor league ranks to try to help that cause. When he became an NHL player, Cote used that fame -- however limited it may have been -- to bring even more awareness to the fight against the disease.

In 2009, the Cote Carnival raised almost $30,000 to benefit the fight against MS. Here's hoping that Riley can instill that same kind of determination and work ethic in young Flyers prospects at the AHL level.

Scratch Marty Turco's name off Flyers' list

Photo

Ronald Martinez - Getty Images

From a story by Tim Panaccio this morning:

All along, various NHL sources have said that Marty Turco would have liked to have become a Flyer this summer.

Ain’t happening.

In late June, Turco, a free agent, told ESPN.com that he had turned down a three-year, $6 million contract offer from the Flyers, who denied the offer though they were given permission by the Dallas Stars to contact him in advance of free agency.

We would have loved to go to the Flyers, but it’s not happening," Turco texted CSNPhilly.com late Saturday from Scotland.

The Flyers options in net are forever dwindling. Hope you're not a Leighton-hater (a Leighater?).

Gettin' naked: 'Wachovia Center' letters removed from Wells Fargo Center

For the fourth time in it's relatively short 14 year history, the building down at 3601 South Broad is getting naked.

Well, you know what we mean. The letters are being stripped off the Wachovia Center today, and assuming the project will take at least a few days, we'd expect those bright, shiny Wells Fargo Center letters to adorn the building by the end of the week.

Personally, I'm disappointed that they aren't removing the WACHOVIA letters in reverse fashion, so when the IA is taken down, it'll say, well... figure that one out on your own.
