Revisiting the Carcillo for Upshall trade

21

Over the weekend, I planned on taking a look at the controversial trade deadline deal that saw Scottie Upshall head to Phoenix for tough guy Daniel Carcillo. It got pushed back to today, but it...

"I’m excited to come to Philly. I grew up [in King City, Ontario] and loved watching the [Flyers] play just because of how aggressive they were. They were definitely my favorite team as a child. … It’s kind of surreal and a dream come true to put on their uniform."

Carcillo acquisition a mistake

The Flyers acquisition of Daniel Carcillo may create a new fan favorite in Philadelphia, but that doesn't mean it was a good move.

Buffalo gets: G Mikael Tellqvist Phoenix gets: 2009 4th round pick For the Flyers, this is rather big. It means that the rumored deal we reported yesterday that had Martin Biron heading to Phoenix potentially for defenseman Derek Morris is dead. Phoenix then would've flipped Biron to Buffalo to fill their goalie void. Apparently that died out, so Buffalo went about other means to fill that void in the net. The Fourth Period is reporting that the Flyers are pressing hard for Morris still, so we'll see where this goes. Puck Daddy reported a rumor this morning that had Biron, Upshall, and Lupul going to Phoenix for goalie Ilya Bryzgalov and Morris. We'll see. This is from the open thread, but I wanted it to be more prominent so nobody misses it.

The Philadelphia Flyers are stepping up their efforts to acquire defenseman Jay Bouwmeester from the Florida Panthers, but salary cap constraints are rearing their ugly head. The Flyers are bumping up against the cap and they are working hard to try to free up some space. Sources say one of the options is trading goaltender Marty Biron and turning the number one job over to Antero Niittymaki. One potential scenario has the Flyers trading Biron to the Phoenix Coyotes as part of a plan that would see the Coyotes flip Biron to another team. But the Coyotes aren't going to make that move unless they have the other deal already set up. It should be noted, however, that Biron has a no-trade clause and would have to be on board with any move that is made.

- Bob McKenzie, TSN.ca UPDATE - The Buffalo News has Derek Morris coming back to the Flyers from the Coyotes. Five For Howling has more on Morris, a strong, aggressive defenseman with a cap hit of almost four million. In other words, this wouldn't be the only deal and it wouldn't be to clear cap space. UPDATE 2 - The Flyers have not yet asked Biron to waive his no-trade clause, Ed Moran reports.
