24 hours after being recalled from the Adirondack Phantoms, Eric Wellwood has been returned to the AHL. He didn't play in his one game up with the big club, just filling in as a 23rd body on the 23-man roster and sitting in the press box. It's also his 23rd birthday, by the way.
So, like, what was the point? Was he insurance, and the plan was to not have him miss any time in Adirondack to being with? If so, that's fine, but why wasn't he kept around as insurance for tomorrow's game against Pittsburgh, too?
The only possible answer I can think of is that somebody else is ready to come back for Thursday's game at home against the Pens. Perhaps Matt Read is ready to return. Tye McGinn's out for a few more weeks still, but perhaps Read will be back sooner than he expected. Or maybe they're clearing the roster spot for Andrej Meszaros? Guess we'll see.
